haven't seen a wrinkle in time (nor read the book tbh) but I am very into a new gods movie

I am very not into a New Gods movie and neither would Jack Kirby have been

hard to imagine Kirby’s visual style translating well to a movie
― the late great, Friday, 16 March 2018 00:36 (six years ago) link
wow this is kinda nuts, not sure even what to think about it tbh. i love kirby's new gods comics but never really thought about what they'd be like as movies.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 16 March 2018 00:47 (six years ago) link
animated or nothing imo. never read new gods but an essential feature of kirby's comics is how truly strange and weird everybody and everything looks. those strange, wide, craggy features, every character a carved ozymandias. half the weirdness is immediately lost when you cast human beings.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 16 March 2018 00:56 (six years ago) link
Doc. Heavens. You need to read the fourth world stuff.
― when worlds collide I'll see you again (Jon not Jon), Friday, 16 March 2018 01:18 (six years ago) link
The person who wrote that article does not know what impresario means. Also I know it sounds super uncool to write the words Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen but well the fourth world cycle debuted in Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen. It was not a ‘trilogy’ of titles.

Countdown to Shakey hating on this idea... ;)

This stuff will be watered down to hell. No way Kirby's beautiful weirdness will translate oe even be attempted.
― Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 16 March 2018 01:35 (six years ago) link
*or
tbf Thor: Ragnarok did a decent job of bringing Kirby-style visuals to life.
― DJI, Friday, 16 March 2018 01:37 (six years ago) link
i think duvernay should have to prove herself with a devil dinosaur movie before she's allowed to make a "new gods" film. or possibly also a film adaptation of jack kirby's "2001: a space odyssey", i feel like that could make a pretty good film. also yeah if they can't get the rights to biker jimmy olsen and don rickles' non-evil twin "goody" rickles, there's no fucking point.
― ziggy the ginhead (rushomancy), Friday, 16 March 2018 01:41 (six years ago) link
― DJI
yeah but thor is a marvel property, new gods is a dc property, and whoever's in charge of making movies out of dc comics has no fucking clue what they're doing.
― ziggy the ginhead (rushomancy), Friday, 16 March 2018 01:42 (six years ago) link
About this news itself I have kind of a wave of yes-noWe’ve already had John Byrne taking a crap on these characters so a movie can hardly be that traumatic

I really enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok but didn't get any extreme Kirby vibes except for Hela. Now Wakanda in BP...THAT felt like Kirby come to life for me.
― Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 16 March 2018 02:36 (six years ago) link
Either way rushomancy otm
In theory, this is a mindbendingly fantastic idea. In practice, this will never be anything more than disappointing at best. It's like proposing a live-action adaptation of Woodring's Frank stuff. Just...no. Leave it alone.

And this will be Kirby as filtered through the sensibility of Johns on some level, yes? Eesh.

Not sure we can really know how Kirby would've felt about a New Gods movie - the very idea of such a thing would've been fairly far-fetched in his lifetime. He didn't appear to mind posing with a Captain America shield prop from the terrible 1990 Cap movie, and he made a cameo appearance in an episode of the Hulk TV series, so at least on some level I think he liked the idea of his work being adapted for movies and TV, if only as a validation of his worth as an artist (of course since his death the esteem he's held in has far exceeded the recognition he received in his lifetime from the wider culture). And while I'm sure the New Gods comics were very important to him, and represent some of his most personal storytelling, it's worth remembering that Kirby at first envisaged other writers and artists actually producing the Fourth World comics, with himself acting more as as a creative consultant/editor - so these characters were never off limits to others. Of course DC comics didn't for a moment entertain such an idea - they'd poached Kirby from Marvel, they wanted Kirby comics.
My best guess is that if Kirby had lived to see a New Gods movie he would've wanted, more than anything, to be heavily creatively involved as a storyboard artist, conceptual artist, writer - and of course to be properly financially rewarded.

As bad as this could be, anything has to be better than the Apokolips storyline that WB did on TV's "Smallville." I mean . . .

Wut.
My perpetual advice to DC re: any potential adaptation of their material would be 'if it's already part of the Timmverse, any subsequent attempt is almost certain to be a shitshow in comparison'.

if anything, phil is underselling the awfulness of the new gods story on smallville tbh

Looks to be about on a par w/ Galactus-as-a-cloud in the FF/Silver Surfer movie.

Was going to make a snarky comment about people who've seen enough Smallville to even know that there was a New Gods storyline but then I remembered how many hundreds of hours of various CW DC shows I've watched and then I hung my head in shame.
