other than where you are?

i would like to live in new york, because it seems exciting. i also like the idea of maine becauwe it seems nice

i'd like to live in certain cities in europe, but i dont speak the language so i'd have to learn. berlin seemed nice, i sometimes wonder about basle, brussels, perhaps vigo or lisbon (although i have never been to the last 2)

somtimes i think all i really want is to be in a little house somewhere near the sea, perhaps the wash, lincs, or norfolk, or east yorks, near withernsea, but i dont drive and i expect i would find it difficult, i've only ever lived in the city

Apart from where I am now...hmmmm,

Probably Moomin Valley or somewhere in Cornwall or Christchurch (UK).

I have never had a major desire to trave.

London, Chicago, New York City, somewhere in Portugal where I can be a portugese fisher(wo)man, and New Zealand around aged 40.

i wow i really really really want to live elsewhere NOW but am tied for a while so i dream instead of living on the westcoast ( nz ) by glaciers with the beautiful southern alps to one side and the wild coast to the other. that area has to be the most gorgeous place on the planet and it just calls me, i love it there, grew up there and man do i want to get back.
ah shit now im all longing again.

Someplace rainy and cheap.

Come to Glasgow!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

[unless you mean the other rainy, obv.]

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm in the place I want to live (very central London), living with my favourite person, and in another month, one of our best friend takes the spare room. Ex-cell-ent.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Turnham Green, Richmond, Wimbledon, Greenwich or central Brighton - cos they're all pretty and still close enough to central london - better start saving up tho, hmph

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 20:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

london. (only 7 weeks to go til i'm back...).

toby (tsg20), Friday, 1 November 2002 20:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Stockholm. Because it's great.

Someplace rainy and cheap.

Portland, Oregon!

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 1 November 2002 21:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

actually i have wondered about both portland and seattle, although i have never been there (i've also thought about helisinki or bilbao)

sometimes i wonder what would have happened if i had moved to Tblisi (which was a possibility after i graduated in 1998 - there was a job there, and i wasnt getting any offers in england. i got the job at my current place, and didnt pursue Tblisi, but my life would have been very different, and perhaps fuller)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 1 November 2002 21:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

and then there was the possibility of manchester this summer (which would have been a mistake. i like manchester a lot, but the circumstances under which a move would have taken place would have been the wrong ones. i would have regretted this move a lot)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 1 November 2002 21:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Somewhere snowy in New England. Or maritime Canada, New Brunswick, how romantic.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 1 November 2002 22:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

somewhere that's a less hectic than London. I liked toronto a lot.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 1 November 2002 22:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Try Dunedin, where it is rainy, there is Rainy, the beer is good and cheap and all is well. Not much Swedish gay trucker metal, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 November 2002 22:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

jel, are you familiar with Christchurch? I like the Priory area.

the only other place on the south coast I'd like to live in is Brighton - this is also the only city (OK it's only recently become so) that appeals to me at the moment.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Friday, 1 November 2002 22:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

actually dunedin would be grand. I could meet and relax with bruce russell and doorag and rainy at starbucks.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 1 November 2002 22:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know. This is a problem because I should get my act together and find somewhere. London scares me, I feel too southern and English and therefore thumpable to live anywhere except the south of England, I want somewhere with loads of interesting indie gigs (oxymoron to most ILXers, I know, but anyway), and I want public transport - I can't drive, so everything would have to be walkable or accessible by public transport - that can get me back from London without having to leave at 9pm or earlier. Unfortunately public transport and stuff to do seem to be things which don't exist in the south except London. Sigh.

(Plus I suspect that the music scenes in Oxford, London and Brighton already contain at least some people who hate me, so avoiding them would win me back the initial period of awkwardness when everyone thinks you're weird and uncool and doesn't talk to you but you can kid yourself that they might one day if you ever dared to speak to them, which is probably an improvement on everyone knowing you're weird and uncool and refusing to talk to you even if you talk to them.)

julio bruce r. lives in lyttelton (where i will be in a couple hours) not dunedin. & i don't guess he ever goes to starbuX0rs 'cause he owns his own cafe (it's called No. 6)
i never go to starbucks either. but yes you should come to dunedin & hang out at, uh i dunno, arc or somewhere.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 1 November 2002 23:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wouldn't want to leave the west coast. I get intimidated by accents. Portland does sound nice (and a little creepy); I've never been there though.

can i count on a ned raggett sponsored tour of SoCal hotspots if i ever do pack up and move there?

amy (amy), Saturday, 2 November 2002 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

When it comes to San Diego my current hotspot knowledge is a bit rusty. Donut Bitch knows more, even though he's in Seattle. ;-) As for LA and OC, we'll have to make it a cosponsored tour with Chaki, Arthur and myself.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 2 November 2002 21:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Donna, Ive never lived there for long, but my Mums family is from there(part of the Reefton Heaphy clan.) Where are you from?

hokitika

donna (donna), Saturday, 2 November 2002 21:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Based on my notions of the weather, I'm interested in Portland, Seattle, and the UK. (I've been to London, but I was 6 at the time; I've never been to the US locations.)

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 2 November 2002 21:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Much more centrally in London would be my first choice. I don't imagine very central (Russell Square would be nice) will ever be within my budget. If I have to choose somewhere outside London, I uess the only reason I like London more than New York is because it's where my friends are. If they all decided they wanted nothing more to do with me or something like that, I can imagine considering moving to New York as a decent option.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 3 November 2002 12:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know where I want to live. I seem to hate every city with an equal passion at the moment, but maybe that's due to my being a "carping indie no-hoper" or whatever.

I suppose place is unimportant. I want to live with people with whom there is mutual respect, intellectual stimulation and emotional support. Fortunately for me, this will be happening shortly, and I am counting down the days!

kate, Sunday, 3 November 2002 13:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

London, different from here but not too different, everything tends to be slightly oh how do I put it "better", I've pretty much made up my mind I want to live in London when I get my degree.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 3 November 2002 13:13 (twenty-one years ago) link
