Control, other than self-control, is usually a delusion.

I need a lot of control. The universe, however, finds that super hilarious, so I have to content myself with arguable control over my faculties and body parts (at least until aging or infirmity finally strips me of that).

Modicum or less, otherwise everything is my fault

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 09:46 (five years ago) link

I’ll take “nice save” or “wow, you handled that well” over “you could have” or “why didn’t you” any time

Got enough of the latter options growing up so basically fuck control, the illusion thereof, and especially when projected

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 09:50 (five years ago) link

el - yeah know the feeling

giving up control can feel so good

ogmor, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 13:55 (five years ago) link

I don't need control if I'm not responsible for the outcome.

which do u hear yanny or (in orbit), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 14:11 (five years ago) link

I really only need control to the extent that I don't harm myself or others. But I tend to catastrophize and assume my words and actions are more potentially harmful than they actually are, so my self-control often takes on an air of self-induced paralysis. Feels like an arena where over-correction is preferable, tho.

I can relate to this fear, but I feel like I've never been able to get my level of control down to a low enough level that I feel absolved of fault, ime trying to avoid everything being my fault leads to avoidance, i.e. making your world small enough that you have complete control over every aspect of it, more rather than less control (or you shrink your world down to match the size of your modicum of control, maybe?)

soref, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 14:35 (five years ago) link

I just recognize that almost nothing is under my control except, like, some of my consumer choices. you'll be surprised to know I'm also a free will skeptic.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 14:43 (five years ago) link

give me no control, or give me all control

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 15:10 (five years ago) link

but please, don't give me some control and then act as if i have all control or zero control

there is no control and set outcomes are poison to the human factor

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 15:15 (five years ago) link

I just recognize that almost nothing is under my control except, like, some of my consumer choices.

I recognise that as well, but I still need the illusion! I was thinking about my ocd and I know the ocd behaviors are irrational and make no sense, but they still give a feeling of control

even if you give up control/responsibility there's still the problem of your own body and mind - I can't give up 'responsibility' for my mind and body because they literally are 'me', but I also feel very aware of my lack of control over my own mind and body and speech: unable to control my own thoughts, feelings, vocal inflections, body language, eye contact, physical appearance etc, unable to look and sound 'appropriate' - so I need more control over my environment to compensate for lack of control over my mind and body? like a secure, cordoned off area around something that you can't control directly?

soref, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

Don't make me plan to have control, take it away thereby ruining all my plans, and then hold me responsible for the outcome.

which do u hear yanny or (in orbit), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link

I think that there's a connection between the way the way my mind responds to ocd behaviors on the one hand and films, records, books etc on the other

films, records and books can be perfect and complete in a way that people never can be - for one thing you can rewatch/replay/reread them and they are exactly the same - even when a person repeats themselves it will never be exactly the same - and that's what's beautiful about films, records, books etc. When you perform ocd behaviors it is the closest you can get to this kind of perfect repetition and creating/being part of a film, record, book if you have no talent or style. This is probably a barren way to engage with works of art in the opinion of many people here, but I think it is generally how I engage with art?

I like this Jeff Lynne song about the joy that can found in control:

I need a mere modicum, for life is a long quiet river.

oder doch?, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 16:28 (five years ago) link

soref i'm not sure exactly what you mean, but i really like the idea. i've long thought that repetition is one source of creativity: repetition/loops create patterns which the mind seeks to organize through ritual, which then creates personal meaning, and the challenge for the artist is to try to communicate that meaning to others

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 16:38 (five years ago) link

sorry to go offtopic, though. the nice thing about repetition/loops is that they can occur purposefully (full control) or naturally (no control). bringing it aaaaall back again, full circle

i don't understand the question

brimstead, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 21:33 (five years ago) link

honestly i did this as i was inspired by a maria minerva track. the question is basically how much control do you need over your habits, your environments, your routines - for example, when my buddies come by i dj all night and i'm music obsessive, that's a control measure i need - not to say if a fellow music fan comes by we don't go 50/50 but otherwise i don't have a ton of control of self control for that matter.

Slippage (Ross), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

I feel like I'm relatively sanguine about my lack of control over life generally, but when I'm operating within a system with certain rules and parameters which theoretically allow for a degree of control beyond that afforded by the broader world (like for example let's say, oh I don't know, the workplace), I can quickly become apoplectic when that control is stymied. Like why are we even engaged in this endeavor if we're just going to shrug our shoulders and let whatever happens happen as if this shit was on par with trying to halt the shifting of continents.

Not with a bang but a MAGA (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

because its not rly v important vs oh idk shifting of the continents
