scenes where a character tells another character “sir/ma’am, you need to see this” and it turns out to be completely unimportant

TV, movies, radio plays, novels, any medium at all. Does this ever happen?

Also in what field of endeavor is it that your average manager is going to take a look at some random phenomenon detected by an underling and immediately grasp the nature and significance of it? Not any job I’ve ever worked since college.

I found a handgun in the bathroom at the coffee shop I worked at when I was in high school, and told my manager. He took a quick look in the bathroom, saw the gun, looked back at me, shrugged his shoulders and just went on with his day. It wasn't until a customer saw the gun and told him that my manager finally did something about it (i.e. wrap the gun in his apron and stash it in his office.

OK, that is a truly unexpected twist on both Chekhov's Gun and the "you need to see this" trope. I love it.

I never did figure out why my manager ignored me but acted when the customer got involved. I suspect the gun was left in the bathroom after being used in a crime, and my manager didn't want to get involved. Still, I will always wonder whatever became of that gun. (Which, in my memory, was a big Harry Callahan-style gun.)

And it was sitting right on top of the toilet tank, not hidden behind it ala The Godfather. So probably not part of a mob hit!

Gibby: Remember the perfect pencil?

Paul: One time he took a shit in the ladies room and he wanted someone to go look at it. He tells me someone drew a pencil in the toilet and I had to check it out.

Gibby: I told him it had to be seen to be believed. A perfectly drawn pencil in the toilet. I mean, how do you get someone to look in the toilet? You got to tell them there is a drawing of a perfect pencil on the bottom.
