Can't it be both?

There is a value in not turning a thread where some interesting chat is happening into a clusterfuck just cos you desperately *need* to clown somebody who is not adding value to the chat, and sometimes that need is urgent and real.

On the other hand, sometimes it's too cryptic to be worth doing.

could always just tweet instead i spose

On the other other hand we have an FP function that I can't help thinking would be more effective if people used it more often rather than debating with undebatablez

imo u should have to name the OG thread tho.

i hate having to guess

Yeah sometimes you can't be bothered trawling likely threads just to see if a cryptozing us good or not

ILX: Masturbation with a Commentary Track

Sgt. Laughter (Old Lunch), Friday, 13 July 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

i guess its probably helpful for moving distracting conversations to a separate place. ofc that demands a level of investment that maybe not everyone has.

what if you want to pop into a thread and give your opinion and leave it at that? then someone calls you stupid, someone else says you are a troll, someone else says your opinion isn't valid because according to the narrative there are only X/Y opinions and since your does not fit that binary, you are being disingenuous. do you want to debate these people? will that involve discussing the topic at hand or is it going to be a shadow play or battle of egos? do you really care about a movie or a tweet made by some other person enough to argue across threads, maybe even across social media spaces? if you don't then you are a drive by and definitely a troll since you did not rise to the aggressive challenge to defend/define your position. maybe you don't care. some people are on ILX all day long and love that drama, some aren't. any approach is not going to be a one-size-fits-all solution.

at a certain point you consider the effort it takes to argue against arguments being brought in from external sources and things. it can feel chaotic. imo ideally there would be a button or filter you could click on at the top of the thread that only showed posts dealing with the subject matter at hand but that is entirely unrealistic, language itself is dynamic, ever-shifting, contextual.

the idea that you can instantaneously communicate to anyone in the entire world. the barrier of entry to communication has been lowered to the point where you don't even have to be able to form speakable sentences, we are effectively communicating via telepathy. you don't even need to pause to consider what you are saying before it can be instantly published to everyone around the world, with little to no expiration date or gates to entry. the amount of power we have been granted is insane, when compared to the past.

it is a brand new, revolutionary change to human social interactions, one of the greatest changes in all of history. we don't understand the technology, the power. the old ways are clashing w the new wails daily, hourly, every second. this is all so shockingly new and we are in the growing pains. optimistically speaking, we will come out of it all with a new global understanding that makes our bathroom-wall-scrawling screaming-toddler era to have been worth it.

I think if you feel your opinion is important enough to air in a discussion you should probably be prepared to discuss it or else stfu, idk tho, it's a free country somewhere

Posts you had second thought about and decided not to post - don't post them at all, how is passive-aggressively dumping them somewhere else without context worth anybody's time jesus christ

The PYHSTA&DNTP thread is an amazing tone poem of shade and tough love that rolls on for years. This poll is trying to make the forest all about the trees.

i think my answer is both

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 13 July 2018 23:09 (five years ago) link

I suspect most people are talking here about the "second thought" thread, but I think the "things you just don't care about" thread, the "Things you had second thoughts about posting to the 'Things you just don't care about' thread," and the "admin log watch" thread all qualify, and they are kinda different.

Personally I think not knowing where the beef stems from is kinda the point. I like not knowing, and like Tombot says I enjoy viewing it as a tone poem. To me it's venting space; when people simply relocate the argument to the meta-thread it defeats the purpose of the meta-thread.

To those like Sgt. Biscuits who would say "just don't post them at all," I would say: point taken, but on another level, pretty much everything here is superfluous; it's all a voluntary leisure activity.

To me the meta-thread post is roughly equivalent to the rhetorical device known as apophasis (mentioning something by saying you won't mention it) or maybe aposiopesis (starting to say something but leaving it unfinished and inviting the reader to infer the rest).

OTOH I am so totally not Board Police, and the one time I tried (lamely) to assert that a discussion conflicted with a thread's purpose I was quickly (and rightly) chided for it.

q: are you hoping that whoever you're responding to sees it or doesn't?

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 14 July 2018 00:38 (five years ago) link

a: I suspect for some meta-thread posters, the thrill of it is not knowing whether the poster will see it and recognize him or herself, or not. It's a bit Russian-roulettish.

nonsensei (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 14 July 2018 00:41 (five years ago) link

ok, so kind of like saying something under your breath?

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 14 July 2018 00:55 (five years ago) link

Yes, or somewhat passive-aggressive argument tactics like "you know what you did," "you know who you are," and "if you don't understand what's wrong I'm not going to help you."

I suspect there have been zings against me that I didn't even recognize as such, and I'm okay with that.
