first batch of TIFF films up

https://www.tiff.net/tiff/films.html

Had no idea Hugh Jackman was starring in a film about the '88 campaign of Gary hart. Unfortunately (probably) the director is Jason Reitman.

Intrigued about many... Lee Chang-dong, McQueen, Holofcener, Denis, Jenkins, Assayas, Don McKellar!

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link

Lots of garbage as per usual but no way in hell am I missing the Denis, gonna try for Chang-dong too.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 15:50 (five years ago) link

Mélanie Laurent directing a Nic Pizzolato screenplay is....kind of intriguing!

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 15:51 (five years ago) link

Nicole Holofcener tends to take her time between movies, so I'm always interested in a new one. Also, looking forward to see what Barry Jenkins does next.

The Don McKellar is based on a novel I liked, so I'll see that.

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link

I read Matt Bai's book that serves as the basis for the Gary Hart film--makes a very convincing case that, even more than Clinton or O.J., Hart's '88 campaign was the gateway to the media world we live in today. I'd want some comedy in the film (especially after having just sleepwalked through Chappaquiddick), but I don't view it as a comedy first and foremost.

clemenza, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

Really surprised by the many world premieres of international arthouse movies this year. Or perhaps some of them will premiere in Venice, but still. The last few years it's mostly been oscar-bait, but Denis, Zhang, Jiang, Nemes, Assayas, Audiard, Hansen-Løve? That's pretty good!

Frederik B, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 07:03 (five years ago) link

If the 159-minute Dragged Across Concrete ends up in Midnight Madness I'm going to have a tough call to make.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 20:52 (five years ago) link

Who has the courage to watch 14-hour La Flor?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 16:44 (five years ago) link

we'll see how they schedule it... otherwise i will wait for NYC theatrical run

the regaydas is 173 minutes

johnny crunch, Thursday, 16 August 2018 20:43 (five years ago) link

my hypothetical TIFF schedule will be drawn from these - LA FLOR times are glitchy and inaccurate at the moment cause it broke TIFFR lol

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 00:27 (five years ago) link

I know HOLD THE DARK comes out a couple weeks later on Netflix but I wanna see some big-screen Saulnier, damn it

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 00:28 (five years ago) link

good picks. im targeting that 'burning' screening also, tho my gf may veto

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 00:50 (five years ago) link

I added the Assayas - didn't notice he was in the mix too!

I only have a ten-ticket package so I'm not gonna see all those. Also according to the TIFF site the LA FLOR screening(s) is/are...free? Which I guess makes sense cause you're committing to not seeing 4/5 other movies lol

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 01:54 (five years ago) link

New Paul Greengrass up there, about the Norway mass shooting..:

... (Eazy), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 08:57 (five years ago) link

The Norwegian one that premiered earlier this year was rage-inducing and I have no faith an American version will be any better. Way too soon.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 09:03 (five years ago) link

I have it on good authority that the Dolan is a hilarious trainwreck. Which makes me almost want to see it.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:27 (five years ago) link

a Roger Ailes doc (will there be barf bags?) and 4 hours on Watergate

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:44 (five years ago) link

The description for Errol Morris' Bannon doc in the TIFF program is pretty barfy too.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:45 (five years ago) link

that's the Dolan film where he cut somebody's major role out, right?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:59 (five years ago) link

Yep - Chastain.

my slate of tiff tix so far

vox lux
greta
high life
life itself
birds of passage

johnny crunch, Thursday, 30 August 2018 23:17 (five years ago) link

NYFF tix have not yet gone on sale to my membership level, let alone the general public, and both Other Side of the Wind screenings are on standby already...

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 15:07 (five years ago) link

I tried and failed to get a High Life ticket at TIFF this morning - all screenings sold out by the time I got to em. Hope they add another screening.

I kinda hafta choose between HL and the Bi Gan film, neither have US release til next year i think.

New Assayas is a pleasant Allen-esque trifle, nothing more.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 19:30 (five years ago) link

Petzold's TRANSIT easily the best thing I've seen so far. Elegant but bruising.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 13 September 2018 03:45 (five years ago) link

xp Really? That's such a drag. I loved Personal Shopper & Clouds of Sils Maria. PS especially I hold in high regard and would rate as one of the best of the decade.

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 September 2018 03:53 (five years ago) link

I go back and forth with him, but I really can't imagine it being anyone's favorite, despite a few amusing scenes.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 13 September 2018 03:57 (five years ago) link

high life is def one to ponder, been thinking & talking abt it since seeing it tues

johnny crunch, Thursday, 13 September 2018 14:16 (five years ago) link

today: Hold the Dark and Ash is Purest White

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 13 September 2018 14:17 (five years ago) link

which were, respectively, mediocre and great

does anyone know if you can trade a ticket for a rush-line voucher?

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 14 September 2018 02:38 (five years ago) link

not suprised but glad to hear Ash is great, definitely my most anticipated for lff

devvvine, Saturday, 15 September 2018 10:19 (five years ago) link

Anyone seen In Fabric?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 15 September 2018 13:33 (five years ago) link

Seeing it in an hour.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 15 September 2018 14:23 (five years ago) link

And it was alright. His most overtly comedic (from what I can recall of the others). Fun to watch but I don't see it lingering long (which has been the theme of the fest so far)

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 15 September 2018 18:07 (five years ago) link

how about the Bi Gan film Long Day's Journey Into Night, did anyone get to see that?

Dan S, Saturday, 15 September 2018 18:18 (five years ago) link

No, but I heard only good things

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 15 September 2018 18:21 (five years ago) link

I've heard so many fest goers call the denis the worst of the fest so it's probably a masterpiece

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 15 September 2018 18:22 (five years ago) link

Yeah, that's a given.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Saturday, 15 September 2018 19:39 (five years ago) link

seems Mike Leigh's Peterloo is divisive at best?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 16 September 2018 00:45 (five years ago) link

I haven't heard of anyone loving it.

I've now watched 7 hours of LA FLOR and it's basically a whole fest of its own

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Sunday, 16 September 2018 00:48 (five years ago) link

ok, hadn't heard of Mariano Llinas or La Flor before your post!

Dan S, Sunday, 16 September 2018 00:53 (five years ago) link

yeah, i'm going to wait til La Flor shows theatrically so I can do one third of it weekly. I liked Extraordinary Stories but i sure as hell don't remember much. Two erstwhile ilxors will be seeing La Flor at NYFF tho.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 16 September 2018 00:54 (five years ago) link

It has stretches that are incredibly tedious and others that are sublime, often back to back.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Sunday, 16 September 2018 01:08 (five years ago) link

I had to bail 2/3 of the way through the six hour chunk that screened today because I need sleep, but because of its structure I don't feel remotely guilty

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Sunday, 16 September 2018 01:10 (five years ago) link

kind of sounds like pedro costa's films to me, the idea of the sublime and the tedious

Dan S, Sunday, 16 September 2018 01:17 (five years ago) link

I like the imdb description of Extraordinary Stories: "In this adventurous experiment in storytelling, secret identities, missing persons, lost treasures, exotic beasts and desperate criminals are only a few of the elements woven into a grand tapestry of mysteries."

Dan S, Sunday, 16 September 2018 01:42 (five years ago) link

The TIFF films that so far I most want to see:

Asako I & II
Ash Is Purest White
Birds of Passage
Burning
Capernaum
Diamantino
Donbass
Girl
High Life
If Beale Street Could Talk
In My Room
La Flor
Long Day’s Journey Into Night
Shoplifters
Sunset
The Death and Life of John F. Donovan
The Good Girls
The Wild Pear Tree
Transit

so many others I haven’t heard much about yet that I’m sure I’ll want to watch

Dan S, Sunday, 16 September 2018 02:24 (five years ago) link

among the audience award contenders - Roma not enthusiastic (although I suppose it could be great), A Star is Born no, Green Book?

Dan S, Sunday, 16 September 2018 03:07 (five years ago) link

I'm expecting Green Book to win

My most trusted cinema pal was unexpectedly wowed by Roma

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Sunday, 16 September 2018 03:08 (five years ago) link

First Man seems like it could take it as well, sounds awful tho

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Sunday, 16 September 2018 03:09 (five years ago) link

yeah it does

Dan S, Sunday, 16 September 2018 03:12 (five years ago) link

I'm expecting Green Book to win <----- it won

final TIFF rankings (not including experimental shorts)

Transit = Ash is Purest White > La Flor* >> Burning > Non-Fiction > In Fabric >> El Angel > Hold the Dark > Angel >>> Donnybrook

*with the caveat that I missed 150ish minutes

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Monday, 17 September 2018 13:14 (five years ago) link

well, i am seeing Transit and Ash is Purest White in NY, so goody!

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 17 September 2018 14:42 (five years ago) link

I need to see Phoenix apparently. (Had previously only seen Barbara - this was much more accomplished.)

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Monday, 17 September 2018 14:44 (five years ago) link

Anticipation for Green Book falling.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Monday, 17 September 2018 14:57 (five years ago) link

Phoenix is an ambitious Vertigo riff (among other things) that didn't really work for me. xp

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 17 September 2018 14:58 (five years ago) link

Barbara and Phoenix are much sleeker than his earlier stuff. You need to also see Gespenster especially! And The State I'm In. I do find him a bit hit and miss, but when he's at his best, as in Transit, he is really great.

the International Platform Jury Award winners Wi Ding Ho’s Cities of Last Things and Emir Baigazin’s The River sound interesting. I've never heard of either of these films (or of the directors)

Dan S, Monday, 17 September 2018 23:12 (five years ago) link

Bela Tarr was on the Platform jury and I was mortified that they made him sit through DONNYBROOK

Emir Baigazin's debut 'Harmony Lesson' premiered in competition in Berlin and won for best artistic contribution for the cinematography, I think, and it's a remarkable film. He's been on my list for years, and I've never had a chance to either see his new stuff or rewatch it, but I'm so happy that he's getting more recognition. I really think he could be special.

three weeks pass...

I didn't swing the 13.5-hour La Flor, but KU is over the moon:

just Petzold left for me, and my bests of NYFF are easily Godard and Jia.

I would put Petzold's in my top 3 of 10 also. Contemporary world for a WW2 period story worked very well. Actor looks like a younger Joaquin Phoenix right down to the lip scar.

I would probably go see that out of curiosity, but why would they schedule a 13+ hour film on successive weeknights? I'm pretty sure they've historically screened stuff like that on weekends: Out 1, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Lav Diaz, etc. If you're working, forget it (my job, anyway).

clemenza, Monday, 18 March 2019 01:55 (five years ago) link

For anyone seeing La Flor for the first time, I'd advise you reserve judgment until at least well into the second of the five parts - it takes a while to get into what it's going for.
