Red Zinger or another hibiscus tea made extra strong and then poured over ice

sometimes straight hibiscus tea instead of one of the blends but that can be a bit much

Rooibos w/ orange peel and lavender

I drink a lot of Clipper's blends and that Trader Joe red raccoon fall one.

herbal tea is my jam!!

in the winter -- thin slices of ginger, turmeric, and lemon unless i'm feeling acidy, chamomile at night
right now -- mint and ginger, sage and rose, hibiscus and orange in varying degrees of heated and iced and sometimes just room temp

Osmanthus tea is great - tastes like sweet butter (in a cake mixture kind of way), but more botanical. Lavender in tea (and anything) is wonderful too.

tangenttangent, Saturday, 28 July 2018 15:55 (five years ago) link

Agreed about turmeric too - especially with charchoal.

i love making herbal teas, this is apparently something i have enjoyed for some time? i don't really feel any shame about it. my bandmate always enjoys whatever i'm having and thinks of me as a person who always has a good tea. herbal tea is the best!

i also have a mobile tea station in the trunk of my car for my classes. they have enjoyed many different types of tea. one surprise favorite every semester is fennel tea. i like it too but i only drink it at work so i get that work-feel-smell-taste-mood. i have taken the tea into shows if they are very small or weeknight or full of people i know or if i am playing. sometimes i want to drink herbal tea even at a show. people always appreciate it too since not everyone wants to drink beer/booze but everyone likes a fancy beverage.

chamomile and lavender is a special one i like to stock for end of semester, when we need a little treat

I've been trying to do the half a fresh lemon and tumeric in hot water every morning.

i don't like to get so far into it that I find myself buying crazy ingredients I can't get at the stores I normally go to. There is probably a world of tea possibility that awaits me but I don't want to spend a bunch of money or time on it -- usually for class I get whatever brands they have at my international grocery store because they're all like $2-3 compared with the Tazo brand or whatever that one brand is that has all the medicinal teas.

i miss my mint plant -- hot water with some mint leaves in it is so simple and good.

Chamomile is my favourite

I usually get mighty leaf’s chamomile citrus if i want something really aromatic

Otherwise celestial seasonings because i go through a box in like a week and mighty leaf makes me feel like I’m getting robbed

Twinings in second though still slightly pricey

The Trader Joe’s one is fine but not as flavourful or aromatic

Bigelow in emergencies or when I’m too lazy to search for the above and that’s all there is

I find some of the other Celestial Seasonings too sweet sometimes but the chamomile one is a good compromise

two months pass...

i bought three varieties (chamomile, sour cherry, rose hip) of a cheap polish brand (they were $1.79 each USD) for my show on friday and it was nice to have herbal tea at a musical event

i brought an electric kettle and cups too

god i love herbal tea and the hippie grocery store near me has a million loose leafs to choose from. i've been thinking i need more grounding, home-occupying activities this winter and that's a good one.

i was really into milk thistle tea for a while but deferred to supplements. it's supposed to be good for gall bladder function? i also like nettle tea but sometimes it tastes like boiled broccoli water?!

strongly recommend trying to find dried osmanthus flowers if you like sweetish florals

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 17:41 (four years ago) link

I tried dandelion root because I thought it would be nice to have something bitter to take away my cravings for coffee, but I didn't need THAT bitter!

These days alternating rooibos with licorice tea as well as celestial seasonings country peach.

Would love some recommendations. The less fruity and the fewer "health claims" the better.

I just gave you a recommendation! Nothing beats mint and ginger though imo.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 18:59 (four years ago) link

Also health claims don’t change the flavor, might as well have some imaginary health benefits with your plant water!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 19:00 (four years ago) link

Sorry LL, I didn't mean to knock on health bennies right after you posted about them! I feel like a dip. I'm mostly dealing with this on a grocery store-level where there are teas advertising like, "Detox!"

☮ (peace, man), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 22:02 (four years ago) link

It's just for the most part I want to come at my herbal teas from a flavor perspective.

☮ (peace, man), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 22:03 (four years ago) link

Don’t sweat it. Detox tea is stupid and is almost certainly ineffective but it can be really tasty — lots of licorice! Milk thistle and osmanthus are both tasty florals, mint and ginger good for everyday. Add a slice of fresh turmeric if you’re feeling crazy. I don’t like lemon in my herbal tea, tastes like vomit.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 23:51 (four years ago) link

Been making this tea called Sportea for a few years. It is killer iced. For some reason I thought there was some liquorice in there but apparently it's black and green teas with ginger, mate and something else. Very energizing. Also has some very sweet iced hibiscus tea awhile back on a really warm day and it was godheadlike

Ornette is blowing bubblegum spiderwebs (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 00:55 (four years ago) link

I definitely gonna try mint and ginger.

ten months pass...

anyone else pretending that their herbal tea is medicinal in quar times? i made three consecutive pots of ginger/turmeric (fresh) + osmanthus or chrysanthemum flowers (dried) recently. might repeat today since it is snowing (???)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 15:14 (four years ago) link

My wife is just getting ready to brew a pot of ginger/turmeric tea.

☮️ (peace, man), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 15:23 (four years ago) link

I fully expect that those things actually do something!! I've bought extra ginger but not made tea w it yet, but maybe you'll inspire me? Yes, rain or snow days feel like optimal tea times. Less tea-ish when the sun is shining.

Rain or shine it’s tea time until I’m warmed up from the inside without the help of hot plant water

I miss sharing/drinking tea w my students :(

Ordered a pound of straight hibiscus to see if it can replace my Red Zinger that’s impossible to find locally. Hopefully rosehips aren’t the magic zinger ingredient.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 16 April 2020 19:02 (four years ago) link

Rose hips don’t have much flavor imo but hibiscus does — delicious hot or iced!!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 16 April 2020 19:08 (four years ago) link

Rose petals and rose buds have gentle rosey flavor

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 16 April 2020 19:09 (four years ago) link

Have fun with the hibiscus! I love it.

I'm ready for it to arrive, my only non-coffee/water drink since lockdown has been Topo Chico and I can't afford to drink as much of that as I have been.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 16 April 2020 21:42 (four years ago) link

My nighttime tipple for years has been hibiscus tea, a palmful of flor de jamaica in a Hario teapot. Sometimes I sweeten it with glycine.

speaking moistly (Sanpaku), Thursday, 16 April 2020 22:14 (four years ago) link

And yeah, its demonstrably medicinal. Hibiscus tea reduces systolic BP.

speaking moistly (Sanpaku), Thursday, 16 April 2020 22:18 (four years ago) link

Made an aggressively strong cold brew just eyeballing amounts. Undiluted, the thing it reminds me of most is beet juice without the overtone of dirt.

Diluted it's still pretty different from Red Zinger (but probably better since I like tart things).
