Married w/ kids to a far-leftist - need advice
First time on Reddit. Looking to get some advice/input on how to proceed with my relationship.
I met my wife 4 years ago. We are both mid 30s. We both shared the same far-left regressive politics when we first met. It started as a casual fling but she got pregnant really quickly. We now have a three year old and a one year old.

We have a great relationship aside from the fact that we cannot discuss politics or any social issues.

Since we’ve been together, I have become a huge fan of JBP, Sam Harris, etc. and my views now run counter to hers on nearly every issue. She regularly talks about white privilege, BLM, and not doing enough to advice SJW causes. She loves Shaun King and doesn’t see any issue with PC culture (thinks it’s great!) She’s even bragged about following a FB page run by a woman that “fuuuucking hates white people.”

I’ve tried to engage in more civil discussions on these issues, but she has frankly stated that she is an ideologue and that these views are “her identity.” There is no moving her, even a little. She refuses to even listen to a counter argument, or to even entertain the idea that there are other arguments.

During the last discussion we had about all of this, she said that is OK with being racist, as long as it’s directed towards whites, even though the children we are raising are white.

My main concern is the children: She’s jokingly talked about enrolling my son in a drag queen classes. I am concerned that any feminine trait he may exhibit once he grows up will be pounced on and exploited by her ideology, and that he will suffer for it.

I am considering a divorce, but this is not a road I want to go down. We get along great as long as these subjects are not breeched. I am concerned that I have less room within the relationship to combat any impending gender/political craziness if I stay within the relationship, because I have to maintain a peace. If I leave there is more freedom, but the children will suffer greatly.

There are dragons under the rug that are growing. I need some help here.

it'a clearly an allusion to the reddit potato thing, with the purpose of pointing out that this is also bullshit. it is a solid ilx post the likes of which the site subsists on and falls into the broad category of "funny" even if i'm not roflmao. as is so often the case, the spotlight of the excelsior thread did it a disservice, and it certainly didn't warrant this thread on top of that. i think everyone involved should apologize to bananaman

TIFU by enraging the parents of my girlfriend by pretending not to know what a potato is.
submitted 3 years ago by NotKnowPotatox4

Let me tell you that I have made a bad mistake this evening.

My girlfriend (who let me tell you is only my 2nd girlfriend of all time) said I am "invited to dinner" with her and her parents. I was very aghast, nervous, and bashful to be invited to such a situation. But I knew it must be done.

I met them nicely, I should tell you, and it started off in a good way. The idea slapped my mind that I should do a comic bit, to make a good impression and become known to them as a person who is amusing.

When I saw that baked potatoes were served I got the idea that it would be very good if I pretended I did not know what potatoes was. That would be funny.

Well let me tell you: backfired on my face. I'll tell you how.

So first when the potato became on my plate, I acted very interesting. I showed an expression on my face so as to seem that I was confused, astounded but in a restrained way, curious, and interested. They did notice, and seemed confused, but did not remark. So I asked "This looks very interesting. What is this?"

They stared at me and the mother said "It's a baked potato." And I was saying "Oh, interesting, a baked....what is it again?"

And she was like "A potato."

And I was like "A 'potato', oh interesting. Never heard of a potato, looks pretty good."

And then they didn't see I was clowning, but thought I really did not know what is a potato. So I knew I would be very shamed, humiliated, depressed, and disgusted if I admitted to making a bad joke, so what I did was to act as if it was not a joke but I committed to the act of pretending I didn't know what a potato is.

They asked me, VERY incredulous, did I really not know what a potato is? That I never heard of a potato. I went with it and told them, yes, I did not ever even hear of a potato. Not only had I never eaten a potato I had never heard the word potato.

This went on for a bit and my girlfriend was acting very confused and embarrassed by my "fucked up antics", and then the more insistent I was about not knowing what a potato is was when them parents starting thinking I DID know what a potato was.

Well let me tell you I had to commit 100% at this point. When I would not admit to knowing what a potato was, the father especially began to get annoyed. At one point he said something like "Enough is enough. You're fucking with us. Admit it." And I said "Sir, before today I never heard of a potato. I still don't know what a potato is, other than some kind of food. I don't know what to tell you."

Well let me tell you he got very annoyed. I decided to take a bite of the potato, and when I did I made a high pitched noise and said "Taste's very strange!"

That is when the father started yelling at me, and the mother kept saying "What are you doing?" and my girlfriend went to some other room.

Finally the father said I should "Get the fuck out of his house" and I said it was irrational to treat me like this just because I never heard of a potato before. Well let me tell you he didn't take that kindly.

Now in text messages I have been telling my girlfriend I really don't know what a potato is. The only way I can ever get out of this is for them to buy that I don't know what a potato is.

I wish I never started it but I can't go back. I think she will break up with me anyway.

It's really good if you totally omit the spicy red peppers, but leave in the sichuan peppercorns, for a flavour that I've been told is more authentically Szechuan-- numbing, but not spicy; 麻, but not 辣

numbing and spicy is a common combo in szechuan food (says i the szechuan expert because i read that one fuchsia dunlop book)

I was told, when in Beijing, at a Szechuan restaurant, by my host, that numbing+spicy is a common characteristic of both Hunan and Sichuan cuisine, that the "mala" (numbing+spicy) combo is idiomatic, in both regions. He said that the "guaiwei" method of spicing was as common as "mala" in Szechuan-- numbing without the spice-- and I've subsequently really been into omitting hot chilis from typically "mala" recipes, but retaining the other spices (incl. sichuan peppercorns). I made a really weird chili crisp using all the typical ingredients, but no arborio peppers (the most important ingredient, for the "la") and made a couple rounds of really interesting and delicious mapo tofu with it. (I'm trying to lay off spicy food as I approach age 40)

This is the main way I eat potato now, due to Chinese family (from Hubei, so spicy but not mouth-numbing) (really wish there were a better way to say it in English, mouth-numbing does not work). I like it a lot but it's often a lot less cooked than I was previously used to, I thought raw potatoes were poisonous for some reason. Anyway, it's really good, but not quite as good as some really good mash imo.

I thought raw potatoes were poisonous for some reason.

They are in the nightshade family, which has some poisonous members. To quote Wikipedia:

Many members of the family contain potent alkaloids, and some are highly toxic, but many, including tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, bell/chili peppers, and tobacco are widely used.
