My immediate and unswayable vote is for one hole, because a straw is topologically equivalent to a torus

Two--one at either end...I know that's the dumb knee-jerk answer--what am I missing here?

one hole. When the voids made by 2 holes touch, they become one hole. This would be obvious if you dug two overlapping holes in the ground.

Just read an explanation of the mathematically correct answer. Need some time to get my head around that, but assuming I can, something I can use in class.

A straw has two ends. It has but one hole, which runs from end to end. A bit of thought reveals that the human body has a similar configuration, so that one may view as logically indistinguishable what are termed one's "mouth" and "asshole".
