Jackie Chan is the third most admired man in the world.

Nothing against him—i enjoyed rush hour. Seems weird though.

Xxxp He is a reliable lackey of the CCP despite being from Hong Kong. He comes out with this stuff from time to time - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/5182114/Jackie-Chan-says-Chinese-people-need-to-be-controlled.html
He has many other bad qualities, but this is the one which has put him at #3 in the list.

what the hell is Erdogan doing on there

people clearly confusing Gadot with actual Wonder Woman

akm, Saturday, 18 August 2018 14:17 (five years ago) link

he’s also the supernaturally graceful star of some of the most deliriously inventive action movies in history so y’know swings and roundabouts i guess xp

I used to work across the aisle from a coworker who went to school with Chairman Xi! small world

a lot of yougov respondents were big fans of his treatment of the foul traitor gülen i s’pose

there’s probably a network tv thread to gossip about this, but I heard somewhere that Priyanka Chopra’s recent foray into american network television is being underwritten by her very wealthy family, which explains why a show that got really bad reviews kept running

the country by country breakdown on the yougov site is interesting, especially the people I'd never heard of (or the people I'd heard of but didn't realise were such a big deal - e.g. the actress who played the nurse in Goodbye Lenin is the third most admired person in Russia after Putin and Valentina Tereshkova)

soref, Saturday, 18 August 2018 15:46 (five years ago) link

The breakdown on the YouGov site of Trump's popularity worldwide is about as strong an argument for nuking America as I've ever seen tbrr.

Malala Yousafzai

Probably the only person on the list I actually admire

The inexorable rise of identity condiments (Sund4r), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 00:43 (five years ago) link

Malala is quite young, does not hold a position of political power, and is not required to make decisions of state. Admiration comes a bit easier under those circumstances. I'm not sure why you withhold admiration from the Dalai Lama, although it is true he is a political figure with quasi-head-of-state status, not just a religious figurehead, so he has many more chances to make missteps. Politics never mix well with moral authority.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 00:51 (five years ago) link

this is a pretty depressing list

however, it's an improvement over the list i once saw in the old book of lists, from like 1976, where the most admired person for about five years running was...henry kissinger!

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 01:07 (five years ago) link

does not hold a position of political power, and is not required to make decisions of state.

This is equally true of many people on the list, including the most-admired person of each sex.

The inexorable rise of identity condiments (Sund4r), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 01:11 (five years ago) link

Anyway, idk if I noticed the Dalai Lama on the list the first time or if I just had a knee-jerk challopsy thought of "theocratic monarch"; I do admire his human rights advocacy and efforts to resist the Chinese occupation.

The inexorable rise of identity condiments (Sund4r), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 01:29 (five years ago) link

It has to be Imran Khan. Handing over control of Pakistan to the Chinese has to be one of the best things that could happen on this planet.
