There are at least four correct answers here, but I have to go with "Black Widower," as it intersects with one of my other favourite recurring Simpsons themes--Selma gets married--but also because:

*Homer miming, with a knife, how he would have killed Bart at the dinner table.
*"Although kissing you would be like kissing some divine ash tray, that's not what I had in mind."
*The "Something Stupid" Karaoke sequence.
*Selma booting the Ottoman across the room when she hears she missed MacGyver in a tank-top.
*The fight over MacGyver ("He was so cruel!").
*“I hope people don’t think I’m marrying you for your money instead of… your less tangible qualities.”
*“You tried to kill me! I want a separation.”
*I'd hate to tell the number-one cop in town how to do his job." "No, please, it's the only way I'll learn."
*"Well, he fooled almost everyone, but there was one little boy who never lost his mistrust."

I honestly don't expect anyone to vote for any non-classic episodes, and I even considered leaving off everything post-1997, but I actually quite like "Day of the Jackanapes" and wanted it as an option. Can't speak for any of the later ones; the most recent one I've seen is "The Italian Bob," which is terrible.

Is The Italian Bob the one with the tone deaf disses of Family Guy and American Dad?

surely there's a "fuck Sideshow Bob for eternity" option I'm missing?

xpost

I don't even remember. Its the one where they travel to Italy and discover that Bob has a wife and child there that he wants to keep unaware of his criminal past. Later, the wife and son find out everything and they want in on the violent revenge against the Simpsons. I don't think I laughed once.

"cape feare" was my single favorite episode as a youth so that one

I love how "Cape Feare" works as a critique of some of the more (intentionally, I know) over-the-top stuff in Scorsese's film, like the hitching a ride on the bottom of the car.

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 00:34 (five years ago) link

Brother from Another series is good for the Bob/Cecil banter and Frasier overtones. But yeah I'm also thinking Cape Fear, or Black Widower.

Soon I will kill you... what? Son pied sent il beau. French for "Her foot smells lovely."

But the whole Limbaugh rant also good:
Mayor Quimby, you are well known for your lenient stance on crime, but suppose for a second that your house was ransacked by thugs, your family was tied up in the basement with socks in their mouths, you try to open the door but there's too much blood on the knob....
Mayor Quimby: What is your, ah, question?
Birch Barlow: My question is about the budget, sir.

In other words, I have no idea.

I think we covered this elsewhere, but I only recently learned that (xpost) was based on an actual exchange from a 1988 Bush vs. Dukakis debate.

unlike y'all i watched these twice at most. (nothing in last 10 years)

Cape Feare has inspired an experimental dystopian play, so there's that against it.

no need to pull punches, Marty may have only sunk so low again with Shutter Island.

I love the everyman cameo he asked to do in that ep as well, where he's just some random guy in the crowd who yells "PROBABLY!"

have to go with gone boy, from season 29. season 29 is seriously underrated

just kidding, i haven't watched any simpsons, ever. never seen it. overrated!

but really i'd have to go with cape feare.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 4 September 2018 02:22 (five years ago) link

brother from another series is not the best episode here, but it still has my all-time favorite bob moment:

bob: madam, your children are NO MORE...than a pack of ill-bred troublemakers.
homer: lisa, too??
bob: ESPECIALLY lisa. but ESPECIALLY bart.

I'd have to go with "Sideshow Bob Roberts" though. So heartbreaking when Lisa finds out Snowball I voted for Bob.

Are we voting for best episode or best KG performance? If the former then of course Cape Feare should win. “BARTDOYOUWANTTOSEEMYNEWCHAINSAWANDHOCKEYMASK” might be my favorite joke the show has ever done.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 4 September 2018 11:12 (five years ago) link

I like the way that the poll itself turns into a series of rakes.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 14:13 (five years ago) link

Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming, for me, for all of the following reasons:

"Way to guard the parking lot, Top Gun!" "I have three medals for this!"

"By the way, I'm aware of the irony of appearing on TV in order to decry it. So don't bother pointing that out."

"I'll tear you up like a Kleenex at a [shudders] snot party!"

Marge: I feel so helpless. What if something happens to them?
Homer: I'm sure they're fine, honey.
Marge: Well, at least they're wearing clean underwear.
[cut to Bart's bed at home, where his underwear is still laid
out]
[inside the base]
Bart: Free and easy, Lis...aaah. There's nothing like an unfurnished
basement for pure comfort.

Later:

Lisa: When Bob broadcast that message, his voice was higher then normal.
And what makes your voice high?
Bart: Tight, binding underwear?

And all of the stuff with Krusty trying to do his show from a cabin in the desert. And finally:
