Director of Gravity, the long-standing ILX favourite Children Of Men and the third Harry Potter Film (one of the better ones?) returns to film-making in and about Mexico for the first time since 2001's Y Tú Mamá También, with a self-penned, semi-autobiographical family drama, shot entirely in black and white. It premiered at Venice Film Festival the other week, taking the Golden Lion top prize and reviews seem to be uniformly ecstatic so far. A Netflix film, streaming there as well as showing in selected theatres 14th December.
Is anyone else excited for this? It looks and sounds very promising indeed. I'm intrigued that he's gone back to Mexico for a film project after years of huge international successes, as well as making what looks to be a perhaps more personal and conspicuously art-oriented film. I've not seen everything he's done (which isn't even a long list at all) and it's been ages since I saw Y Tú Mamá También, but still I'm anticipating this. What say you all?

Excited for this - the trailer looks beautiful. Easily my favourite working director (and yes, third Harry Potter is absolutely the best of the series, just for allowing the teenage actors look and dress like teenagers).

So, is this premiering in "select" theatres and on Netflix simultaneously? If so, interesting strategy--plus it means I won't be waiting 8 months to see it, so yay!

I'm curious about that side of things too. I don't know if there are better sources, but things sound quite ambiguous still from the latter portion of this Hollywood Reporter article: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/alfonso-cuaron-talks-making-his-autobiographical-roma-netflix-1138518

Does anyone think they'll get a chance to see this in their local cinema? I was hoping at least one here in Glasgow might show it, but no sign of a listing yet sadly.

As Screen reported earlier this month, a group of UK and Irish exhibitors had petitioned the streaming service to allow them to programme ROMA outside of its theatrical engagement with Curzon Cinemas. The streaming service is now talking to multiple UK indies and there are ongoing discussions over terms. One exhibitor told Screen Netflix is looking to only place the film in cinemas that have the capability to project 70mm film or 4k digital and have Dolby Atmos sound. But the majority of indie sites can’t offer both of those and this could prove a sticking point.ROMA is one of only a few Netflix titles to receive a short theatrical window, rather than being day-and-date released with the online platform. The theatrical run begins on November 21 in Los Angeles, New York and Mexico. In the UK, ROMA will initially be released in a solitary venue from November 29, London’s Curzon Soho. This will be followed by an expansion to Curzon Bloomsbury for its second week from December 6.From December 14, the film will expand to the full list of 13 Curzon venues and will also play in two cinemas in Scotland (Glasgow Film Theatre and Edinburgh Filmhouse) and two in Ireland (Dublin Lighthouse and Galway Palas).

I got to see it on a massive screen a month ago - there’s a duplicate thread for some reason that is mostly negative but I really liked it (it was the “surprise film” that closed a festival so I had no idea what I had a ticket for, and also I guess this film’s existence had passed me by so the whole thing was completely unanticipated)The sound design was great & reminded me of Martel films like La Ciénaga

Does anyone think they'll get a chance to see this in their local cinema? If you count the fourth-closest cinema, 20 minutes walk away. It has a 1 week run on their 80-foot screen from December 6th.
