this sounds tiresome
but tbh I haven't liked anything he's done since the Kingdom lol

Coincidentally I think it's having it's Danish premiere right about now. I'm not there :(

Someone I know with good taste told me this was "hilarious"; make of that what you will

I'm past finding this guy funny.

(and also found it funny)
Both Melancholia and Nymphomaniac was hilarious at times. The spoons!
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 19:36 (five years ago) link
Ever yawn so hard it feels like your jaw popped out of place?
― grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 19:40 (five years ago) link
Melancholia was a good film and Antichrist was deranged but undeniably powerful. Couldn’t get through Nymphomanic but I don’t think of von trier as a shallow provocateur.
― Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 20:06 (five years ago) link
Will not see this though. I don’t enjoy violent movies — I was jsut speaking objectively
― Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 20:07 (five years ago) link
The fact that Von Trier believes this material is "shocking" or "provocative" just makes me think they don't show reruns of Criminal Minds on Danish TV.
― grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link
lol love the poster with LVT on it. looking good w/ beard & glasses. Haven't heard from any friends that've seen it but comments in here are encouraging. realizing it's been nearly a decade since Antichrist ("deranged but undeniably powerful" OTM), 7 years since Melancholia (saw it when it came out and was most struck by Dunst's very deft and affecting portrayal of depression/dissociation, need to revisit), and 4 and a half since Nymphomaniac (enjoyable but nothing more than cheap thrills. I liked the ending).
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 21:15 (five years ago) link
I also never need to see Antichrist again
x-posts: You know, I don't think it's on, no. But for some reason there was a lot of interest in Hannibal
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 21:16 (five years ago) link
Presumably it was the local popularity of Hugh Dancy.
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 21:32 (five years ago) link
Yeah, this is very good. It's kinda like Nymphomaniac, but Jack is way less of a character than Joe was (or perhaps because he is a sociopath, he has no idea of how to psychologize himself). I love the associative way these films are constructed, and the cutting and sound design of this film is especially great. It's not really that violent - and apparently the US version is less violent than the Danish one - but some of it is sadistic and drawn out and tough to take. And one monologue is inadvertently perhaps the best responses to #MeToo so far.

Was that the same "Director's Cut" about to make the rounds for one night in North America?
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 12:34 (five years ago) link
Yeah, probably. It's been cut for an R-rating in North America, and I think the rest of the world will get an uncensored version.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 12:41 (five years ago) link
bummer. it's opening here in a couple weeks
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 17:40 (five years ago) link
I don't think you'll miss that much. It's plenty sadistic even without the explicit violence.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 20:39 (five years ago) link
I've heard the cuts are pretty minor fwiw
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 20:52 (five years ago) link
oh turns out the theater getting it is showing the "director's cut" for one night only before the general release, but I'm gonna be out of town. I don't know, I like LVT but his movies take a lot out of me and idk if it's ever been worth it (with the exception of Melancholia - very few depictions of severe depression as vivid as Kirsten Dunst in that). Been meaning to revisit Dancer in the Dark but it's a daunting proposition.
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link
I know what you mean, I sort of can't believe I was able to get through the director's cut of Nympho twice
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link
haha there's a director's cut? does it combine the two films? yeah, I saw both of those in a theater and don't ever need to revisit them.
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 21:22 (five years ago) link
It's still in two parts but it totals at 5.5 hours long as opposed to the theatrical cut's puny four hours
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link
Jesus fuck
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 21:28 (five years ago) link
It's definitely superior but as you can imagine it's thick with a lot of his most punishingly graphic material
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 21:30 (five years ago) link
Yeah, nothing in The House That Jack Built is as awful and graphic as.... that... scene...
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 22:06 (five years ago) link
saw the directors cut last night...contained a lot of what i dislike abt lvtpainstakingly long scenes rubbing the audiences face in the 'murder as art' thesistaken to the nth extreme m/lidk i get that its mocking this type of thinking & in the end condemns jack but its just wildly unpleasant imo

― resident hack (Simon H.), Sunday, 2 December 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link
Lol at the End of Days comparison. I'm still very excited to see this - opens here in a couple of weeks.
It surprises me how often I hear accusations of sadism levelled at LvT when the majority of his characters are explorations of masochism. Not that anyone here is really saying that, it just always seemed to me that he's hardly 'director as sadist', but rather exposes the trials and vulnerabilities of his own disposition. Whilst also being (sometimes too) impish.
― tangenttangent, Sunday, 2 December 2018 19:58 (five years ago) link
I bet I can guess which frames were removed for the R-rated cut.

lol
― Frederik B, Sunday, 2 December 2018 20:24 (five years ago) link
I will say this felt less like a cohesive statement to me than Nymphomaniac did, despite being fairly similar in a lot of ways (dual/duelling narrator, labelled parts, structured around relationships/"encounters"). Some of it really landed but I can't say that, for instance, the Riley Keough torture/murder sequence added much of consequence that I can identify. I did love the gonzo epilogue and most of the comic beats -- if he does make another movie after this I'd love to see him take another crack at a straight-up farce, with or without an art history lecture embedded.
― resident hack (Simon H.), Sunday, 2 December 2018 22:47 (five years ago) link
Lars von Trier is very good at farce. The final episode of The Kingdom I, the last part of Europa, the first half of Melancholia. I'm not sure I need him to make another 'comedy', though, I felt The Boss Of It All, though I like it very much, showed the limits of this as well...
― Frederik B, Monday, 3 December 2018 09:48 (five years ago) link
Wesley Morris went ham on this in his NYT review, calling both the protagonist and LVT "bores"
― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 14 December 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link
No one's changing anyone's mind re: LVT at this point.
― I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Friday, 14 December 2018 18:47 (five years ago) link
I'm not sure I need another full-on comedy but I think he's pretty much pushed the violence and cruelty envelope as much as I care to see it, and I'm not convinced the most sadistic parts of the new one are up to much, thematically speaking
― resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 14 December 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link
my mind is made up that Lars is frequently a self-adoring provocateur asshole, but still his movies range from painfully stupid (Dogville, Dancer in the Dark) to meh (Melancholia) to quite good (Nympho, Kingdom, BtW)

^ this is really good, considerate review. It's not so much about changing minds on LvT, more of a considerate review of the actual film

but still his movies range from painfully stupid (Dogville, Dancer in the Dark) to meh (Melancholia) to quite good (Nympho, Kingdom, BtW)
weird, I don't see too many ppl who rate things similarly but I likewise hated Dancer in the Dark and Dogville, and my favorite thing he's done is def the Kingdom (I haven't seen Nymphomaniac). all told I'm p tired of this guy.
― Οὖτις, Monday, 17 December 2018 22:22 (five years ago) link
Dogville is the my favorite, but I can live with Breaking the Waves as his de facto masterpiece.
― I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Monday, 17 December 2018 23:00 (five years ago) link
Nympho is his culminating work but it's also 4 to 5.5 hours long so I don't begrudge anyone skipping it.

― horford chants out between two worlds, "kyrie walk with me" (slothroprhymes), Monday, 18 February 2019 17:21 (five years ago) link
watched this last friday and think its scenes vary wildly from incredible to dogshit, and it doesn't really have a clear reason for its existence, but i liked the epilogue and all of the acting
also, ganz saying "and what does this ridiculous man have to do with anything" over footage of glenn gould blabbering to himself while playing (per his frequent wont), and pretty much all of the other ganz lines, were hysterical
