amazed and kinda alarmed by how many of these i saw in the theater. i guess the one i'd go w/ would have to be super mario bros, which is such a weird semi-tragic waste of awesome potential, these elaborate sets and costumes that were obviously intended for a dark and surreal take on the material, some great actors, everyone kinda giving it their all, and none of it really comes off because the script and dialogue are so bad.

Have seen 1 and 3/4 of these. Walked out of Exit to Eden about 3/4 through, so that means Encino Man is the winner.

I saw Beethoven, Forrest Gump, Freejack, The Jerky Boys: The Movie, Ladybugs, Mr. Destiny, Richie Rich and Taking Care of Business in theatres, and Ghost Dad at the drive-in (as a double feature with Bird on a Wire, which would have fit right in with this batch). Of those, I remember actually kind of enjoying Ladybugs and Taking Care of Business at the time, though I don't imagine that I'll make any effort to see either of them again. I would argue in my defence that 1990-1995 covers ages 11-16 for me, but in the same span I also went to theatres to see Dick Tracy, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Die Hard 2: Die Harder, L.A. Story, The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Wayne's World, Death Becomes Her, Unforgiven, Matinee, Groundhog Day, Jurassic Park, In the Line of Fire, The Fugitive, The Age of Innocence, Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, Die Hard With a Vengeance, Se7en, Leaving Las Vegas and Toy Story, so its not like I was unable to distinguish good Hollywood product from bad. More likely it was a time in my life when going to see a movie--any movie--was a treat, and a lot of the time I was at the mercy of whatever friends or family wanted to see (I can't imagine that I will ever end up willingly seeing a worse movie The Jerky Boys in my lifetime).

But yeah, that's a pretty depressing list. Very few of those movies even manage to be awesomely bad in that way that is catnip to bad movie lovers (and of the ones that are, I'd very much include Forrest Gump alongside Nothing But Trouble and possibly Exit to Eden). They're just bland, forgettable mush.

TBF, that's pretty much exactly what I was going for.

This era is replete with both great + seminal flicks that form a large part of my cultural foundation and amazing cheese that was likewise formative. And I intentionally excluded some of the movies I disliked the most because I thought they might find some defenders. Was mostly looking to poll the cinematic equivalent of an unpleasantly moist and flavorless slice of bread.

Of the few movies on this list I have seen, several of them were because my then-boyfriend wanted to rent them. That's not THE reason he's my ex, but it certainly didn't weigh in his favor.

I will grant that the presence of Grodin (who's in at least a few of these things) might elevate a movie which would otherwise be a pile of irredeemable garbage.

(Almost completely off the topic at hand because it's a fantastic movie, but I'd say that Grodin's role in The Great Muppet Caper is among the top five comic performances of the '80s.)
