Erin Brockovich, followed by Crouching Tiger, and it's not even close.

Gladiator voters pls report to your nearest coliseum

I remember my college friends' reaction to my claim that Erin Brockovich was clearly better than Traffic.

I also remember the morning nominations announcement this year being the final nail in the coffin for me. The best picture lineup of '99 provided basically all the other nails.

huh I've actually seen all of these

Crouching Tiger is my favorite but I like all of them

crouching tiger is a beautiful film, been way too long since i've seen it. not versed enough in chinese mythology or cinema to figure out what exactly its ripping off, but it's exceedingly well-executed all the same.

xp wait, Chocolat?!

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Friday, 8 February 2019 17:48 (five years ago) link

The aughts brought a lot of even worse best picture nominees, but at the time, it felt like easily the least consequential waste-of-a-slot contender in the entire time I'd been watching the Oscars

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Friday, 8 February 2019 17:49 (five years ago) link

Seen all but Gladiator. Not crazy about any of them, but nor do I hate any of them (Chocolat is likely the least worthy of this lot, but it is what it is).

chocolat and traffic are actively risible. crouching tiger and gladiator are ok, wouldn't rewatch tbh. haven't seen erin brockovich

I liked CTHD, but had no context--I don't know how well it compared to its influences. Traffic and Gladiator were okay. Haven't seen Chocolat, never will; haven't seen Erin Brockovich, have been meaning to for a long time.

I've only seen the Soderberghs and have nothing to contribute here except my delight in seeing DJP active.

Chocolat, the film directed by Claire Denis is an excellent film, well-deserving of accolades. I'd vote for it in a heartbeat. But it was made in 1988 and this CHOCOLAT from 2000 is not it. I never saw this one. I have no idea, although I notice it has pretty much sunk from view without a trace.

My wife is enamored of Erin Brockovich, more so than I. I see it as a well-constructed 'message' movie with some biopic elements. Sturdy, moderately inspiring, gets its point across, but not a great movie.

Gladiator was pure sensationalism masquerading as history, an "oooh, we can capitalize on Roman perversion while pretending to deplore it" play for $$$. Junk.

I never saw Traffic. ILX consensus tells me I should not regret this fact.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is easily the most intriguing story, well-scripted, well-acted, with a beautiful score and cinematography. The all-around package.

Your wife is correct. This is obviously the most human, interesting movie.

How many directors have produced multiple films nominated for Best Picture in a year?

I've got Steven Soderbergh 2000, Michael Curtiz 1938 (The Adventures of Robin Hood, Four Daughters), Victor Fleming 1939 (Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of Oz).

Any more?

Hey hey, the tipple’s weak sherry (fionnland), Thursday, 7 March 2019 12:12 (five years ago) link

Only Curtiz and Soderbergh have been nominated twice in the same year, tho.

For Best Director, yes.

"What are the odds?" Soderbergh, 38, said in an interview before the Directors Guild awards. "It's only the second time it's happened, and the double-double has never happened."

The double-double was his two directing nods, plus the two best-picture Oscar nominations he scored for "Erin Brockovich" and "Traffic."

"I think Steven would say that he's in the zone," said Laura Bickford, a producer on "Traffic."

In 1938, Michael Curtiz had best-director Oscar nods for both "Angels With Dirty Faces" and "Four Daughters," though only the latter film was nominated for best picture. Curtiz lost to Frank Capra for "You Can't Take It With You."

I would also like to belatedly point out Soderbegh's mistake above as the double-double was completed in 1938 by Curtiz with the addition of his best picture nomination for The Adventures of Robin Hood.
