awful news. i'm sure many ppl have longer-running appreciations but i just liked him a lot on riverdale :(

I'll always cherish him as Krusty's worthless half-brother.

I can't pretend to know a lot about Perry but I do know they wanted to make him James Dean and he obviously didn't want it. But he always seemed to work, didn't he? And not just off his face. It's a hell of a lot more than most.

His monologue from that ep is good too--Phil Hartman as Obi Wan telling Perry to "Use the force Luke, Kick his AHHHSSS Luke!" to deal with a heckler.

Just a small detail, but Luke Perry's son is a pro wrestler and he's spent the last several years going to indie shows to support his kid's dream. Seemed like a stand-up dude. pic.twitter.com/N40AwlvNfG

Watched his great Simspons episode over lunch today.

I didn’t follow either of his teen dramas, but I remember him being solid as a cop-turned-crook in a decent mid 90s thriller called Normal Life.

i gotta say, luke perry was cool in 90210!

The only times I've seen Luke Perry's acting were brief cameos in The Fifth Element and the series Community.

there's speculation that it could've been a hemorrhagic stroke.
none of the articles i've read have specified what type, though.

RIP. :( 90210 got me forever hooked on teen dramas and Dylan Mackay pretty much became the template for every modern "high school bad boy with a heart of gold" character on TV since.

Whenever my stepdaughter and I watched Riverdale together, I enjoyed telling her that Archie's dad was basically my era's Jughead.

Roz, Tuesday, 5 March 2019 06:42 (five years ago) link

is riverdale as popular as 90210?

ever since streaming became a thing, it's become so hard to
gauge how influential shows are these days.

John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Tuesday, 5 March 2019 06:52 (five years ago) link

Probably more so - in the 90s, shows like 90210 only came to my country about a year or two after they first air in the US.

Now shows get streamed around the world pretty much simultaneously.

Roz, Tuesday, 5 March 2019 07:05 (five years ago) link

In the US, it's not even close. 90210 was enormous, multiple spin-offs, made the main cast overnight stars. Riverdale is more like a Dawson's Creek level of popular.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 5 March 2019 08:08 (five years ago) link

I think Riverdale prob has more viewers, but you're right - in terms of cultural impact, 90210 has it beat.

90210 benefited from being the only thing like it on TV at the time (other than Degrassi, and sitcoms like Parker Lewis/Saved by the Bell), whereas there are dozens and dozens of teen dramas now - most of which would not exist without 90210.

Roz, Tuesday, 5 March 2019 08:29 (five years ago) link

The TV audience for series is much lower than it was 25 years ago, I'm pretty sure. There were only 4 networks.

#LukePerry you’re gone way too soon. I met him once when Tom Bergin’s was closing up in July of 2013. He actually served as a guest bartender and the crowd loved it. We exchanged a few words and I could tell he was a fun, passionate actor. You’ll be missed, sir. pic.twitter.com/Yp7cSR055B

The first time I met Luke Perry we talked about what kind of movie we wanted “Buffy” to be. I asked if he’d ever seen “Near Dark” and he gave me a look of HOW DARE YOU SIR and I knew we’d get along. Funny, committed, and always gracious. He shouldn’t be gone.

xp I'd be stunned if Riverdale has more viewers.... but then Netflix being almost global and stuff?? I know Netflix are cagey about specific series numbers, but any indicators around?

maffew12, Tuesday, 5 March 2019 22:35 (five years ago) link

there's zero chance Riverdale is even close, according to Wiki 90210 generally averaged 11M per episode in the US ALONE, biggest episode was 21M

UMS otm. The notion that Riverdale might have more viewers than 90210 is insane. The 90s were tv's major league. You could not only watch 90210 in basically every country, you could also buy 90210 pencils and journals and t-shirts and special magazines and VHS tapes, let alone products endorsed by the actors, everywhere around the globe. And people did, in droves.

Riverdale isn't a Netflix show, it's a CW show, and you can see their ratings here: https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/cw-2018-19-season-ratings/

A couple friends wrote a book, Everything I Need to Know I Learned on 90210, was in the publisher's fall catalog but got cancelled when they pulled the plug on season 11.

or this shows it tied with 14 other shows in 126th place for the season: https://deadline.com/2018/05/2017-2018-tv-series-ratings-rankings-full-list-of-shows-1202395851/

Plinka Trinka Banga Tink (Eliza D.), Tuesday, 5 March 2019 23:55 (five years ago) link

episodes get added weekly here in Canada and presumably elsewhere, so I think the majority of people watch it on Netflix. but yes, it's not a Netflix production.

and yeah every big 90s TV show is literally at least ten times bigger than almost anything now, save for like peak-era Walking Dead. the pilot for Twin Peaks had like 35 million viewers ffs

yeah, i was trying to get some figures for other netflix shows a while back
and found out they don't make their numbers public due to having smaller
scale shows on their site. it makes sense, but sometimes i really get an itch
to find out the viewership numbers for the more successful shows. having
said that, at least not having the numbers doesn't encourage production
houses to game the system somehow.

John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Wednesday, 6 March 2019 00:25 (five years ago) link

There’s SO many stories about how kind he was.
This one got to me yesterday, I keep thinking about it

Luke Perry was a truly lovely next-door neighbor to my grandfather and aunt. Like, he came over to replace light bulbs all the time. Sending so much love to his family. This is the worst.

is there a place where someone's collected these anecdotes?

Let's have sensible centrist armageddon (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 March 2019 00:57 (five years ago) link

xpost there’s a buzzfeed recap, i’ll try to find it

Rewatched the Buffy movie last night. I am well aware that it’s terrible & I get why Whedon hates it but I still enjoy it nonetheless for nostalgia & dumb fun.

Perry’s Pike is legit the best thing about it (also fwiw Pike is the best Buffy boyfriend of all of them, I dont care if he’s not canon)

His character is basically “what if Dylan from 90210 was a charming dorky burnout instead of a charming cool rich kid” and Perry pulls it off pretty effortlessly

A-list or no, he certainly acted the part. These stories of modesty, humor, and generosity set the bar high.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 March 2019 02:54 (five years ago) link

Feels a bit parallel somehow to Keanu.
It’s weird that that level of decency & kindness is rare but it def should be celebrated & encouraged

I mean even these tips are like normcore oldschool Dad “be good to your mother” stuff but it feels like he really lived it & people around him were lifted up by it

In 2017, we asked Luke Perry what advice he gave to his younger @CW_Riverdale co-stars. Here’s what he said. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/t7i1MNgpTq
