I thought he was great in House of Cards--single biggest loss when he more or less disappeared the last couple of seasons--really good in Moonlight, and, although hemmed in a bit by the show's inherent grimness--fine in the third season of True Detective. I haven't seen Green Book or anything else he's been in. He looks to be a first-tier actor for the foreseeable future.

I read up on him a bit the other night, and he shortened his first name (from Mahershalalhashbaz) because it wouldn't fit on a movie poster. He was given the choice of something shorter or M. Ali. Now that he has leverage, he should tell the next movie studio he's going back to Mahershalalhashbaz. "Make it fit."

He was a series regular in his first imdb credit (Crossing Jordan). I think the first thing I saw him in was probably Treme.
