It hadn't really occurred to me but after jumping around a bit with the initial solo Avengers movie sequels, they've done a pretty decent job of keeping a single director at the helm of each of these sub-franchises. Seems like a solid strategy.

At this point, Marvel's loooooooong-delayed phase four announcement (which will reportedly drop at SDCC in, what, a week or so) is gonna be kinda anticlimactic aside from anything they might have cooking with the Fox acquisitions. We already have unofficial-but-mostly-pretty-official news on at least a half dozen movies in various stages of development.

C'mon, I trust him to point satire in the right direction.
From the wiki:Lonely German boy Jojo "Rabbit" Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) has his world view turned upside down when he discovers that his single mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi), Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.
In March 2018, it was revealed that Taika Waititi would not only direct but also co-star in the film as an imaginary Adolf Hitler. Speaking of the context of the role, Waititi said "It's my version of... a lonely boy's best version of his hero, which is really his dad", referencing the fact that in the film, the protagonist, a 10-year-old boy, is desperate to join Hitler's ranks during World War II. Later that month, Scarlett Johansson joined the cast to portray the mother of the lead child, who is secretly anti-Nazi. In April 2018, Sam Rockwell joined the cast to portray "a Nazi captain who runs a Hitler Youth camp". In May 2018, Rebel Wilson joined the cast to portray "a brutish instructor in the Hitler Youth Camp the young man has just been recruited to attend". Filming was also set to begin in Prague shortly thereafter. Later that month, newcomer Roman Griffin joined the cast to star as Johansson's son while Thomasin McKenzie was cast as the Jewish girl whom Johansson hides in her home.

It occurred to me recently that they've ruthlessly dispatched a fairly sizable percentage of Thor's supporting cast, so it's hard to know where they might be going next. I sorta wonder if after a successful decade of films loosely adapting and remixing previous comics storylines they won't start pushing into more original territory. A Beta Ray encounter in space seems like kind of a no-brainer, but from there who even knows.

Just rewatched the latest Doctor strange, which one of my kids wanted to see, and this is so much better than that. Good to have a bad guy with at least minimally complex motives, Even if the bad guy in this case was essentially Voldemort.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 9 July 2022 17:25 (one year ago) link
I really didn't dig it, and I'm not entirely sure why? I think you could probably build two or three really good films out of the bits of it, but they didn't really gel together. And I'm not usually averse to tonal shifts!
Partly this was Bale - terrible when he's serious and more terrible when he's not (the bit? in the cage? with the snake?)
Partly this was too much Taika Waititi in multiple dimensions - there's another screenwriter involved but I'm guessing that they didn't get much of a chance to rewrite Korg, and Korg is all over the film, offering wry commentary and flattening any attempts to get a vibe going.
Also Waititi can't leave a joke alone - the first few times Stormbringer drifted jealously into frame were good, but it brought the film screeching to a halt at least once more after that - and then in the finale, where it might've been of some relevance, Thor just hacks at a few arms.
And again the actors joke is rolled out (because it's funny), and then again at a time of great trauma (when it's not). And it hits slightly differently from the original (that it's a sign of the vanity of Loki-as-Odin) that it's now New Asgard as gaudy tourist trap.
I liked Tessa Thompson a lot as Valkryie in Ragnarok - now she's here but not here, most are exposition and reaction, or wry exposition or wry reaction.
The Paradise Omnipotence City section is weird because one the one hand it's entirely unnecessary to the film, but on the other it's one of the few times that they're not shuttling from point A to point B and it's actually really fun in a way that a lot of the rest of the film isn't? Waititi still has a great eye for bright and varied spectacle.
The death for me was when Thor was giving his third pompous and useless speech of the film, to the kids in the cage, and I realised he was resembling no-one so much as Boris Johnson.
There is exactly as much Guardians of the Galaxy as there should be (which means I saw most of it in the trailers) and far too little Kat Dennings.

I saw a quote from Taika Waititi in the last week, that he was getting pissy that lots of people are discovering Kate Bush through Stranger Things when that's the only song they know, and he was going to have a bunch of less well-known songs by her on the soundtrack until this (which is, like, a month ago?) and so I was amused to see that the soundtrack is actually the three biggest hits by struggling indie rock band Guns'n'Roses.
