ok so i really don't know anything about judy garland other than picking up decontextualized bits and bobs as one does being a gay millennial man, and i expected to not like this movie because i don't like biopics and the reviews are mixed. however, it's been two months since i saw it and i can't get it out of my head. ultimately it's a pretty rough movie about abuse and trauma that DOES NOT offer any panacea or happy ending and zellweger's performance is completely scorching. i don't know if i ever want to see it again but already it's the movie that has left the biggest impression on me this year, probably because it hit so close to home. anyway in spite of my personal reaction to the movie i think it deserves its own thread if only for zellweger's remarkable performance and the movie's lopsided devolution into total tragedy which does not seem like something most biopics do or aspire to do.

I avoided because of biopic weariness and my memory of Judy Davis' performance in an otherwise tepid cable movie in 2000 or 2001.

She's great in it. I thought the film was good considering how utterly joyless and grim it is.

xxp yeah it's the most downbeat biopic* i've ever seen i think. It has a nice 'rainy day' quality though.

*or whatever you call them nowadays.
