what is the point of posting?

just placing this here because it seems like something that should come up in a search for this question

there is no goal besides posting. a true poster will always post.

ciderpress, Thursday, 28 November 2019 06:08 (four years ago) link

the post creates its point as it is read

i sometimes wonder about the lasting effect of these posts, knowing that they are still here for someone to find years after the fact. they have more permanence than the bits of a conversation have, even if they're never seen again. they're on some map, at least, along with a million other similar points. i still think of the internet in that way, as some sort of evolving guidebook, even though i know i should just be thinking about who is recording this and who they're selling it to

So you want to have some legacy?

they're on some map, at least, along with a million other similar points.

Points or "points"?

viborg, Thursday, 28 November 2019 06:37 (four years ago) link

'points'

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Thursday, 28 November 2019 06:42 (four years ago) link

points, though, is the real answer. data points in a series.

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Thursday, 28 November 2019 06:43 (four years ago) link

So you want to have some legacy?

but this, yes, i think cuts to the point. no pun intended!

maybe not even having a positive legacy, more like not having a negative legacy

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Thursday, 28 November 2019 06:48 (four years ago) link

FALSE ^^

because not posting at all would also result in a non-negative legacy. it must be about some hope to be positive.

Seems to be true of most things.
& not to be put off posting by others.

This is the closest I’ve ever come to living a “double life.” Even if I tell people I contribute to a messageboard, I don’t think they get the extent of how much I post and how I know like 100 people from here.

In many ways, ilx has shaped my worldview, especially reading the archives when I was in college (before I was a poster). It was a kind of map, then—you could find a multiplicity of perspectives on 1,000 separate topics. Feels less like that now.

treeship., Thursday, 28 November 2019 17:36 (four years ago) link

It’s still way better than twitter. People aren’t constantly preening for attention on here really—they talk about topics.

it sounds paradoxical i know but lurkers are posters, perhaps the greatest, most monstrous posters, think of the possibility, the potential to post, as soon as the first one is published the utter nakedness of it puts all the lurked posts in a whole other light, the perverse knowledge of the lurker, knowing that they've been watching all along, listening in, recording their resentments and their objections and their little quips, waiting, waiting, waiting

I'm sure the point for me used to be to share and obtain information, but now it's pretty much just to try to stop feeling entirely alone in the world.
