And I’m ruling out football figures.MB: This is probably not going to get a good review, but I’m going to say Adolf Hitler. It was obviously very sad and he had bad motives, but the way he was able to lead was second-to-none. How he rallied a group and a following, I want to know how he did that. Bad intentions of course, but you can’t deny he wasn’t a great leader.

this might not be the most sober or serious content for the race thread, but that quote reminds me: I used to live with a Mexican guy with an edgy sense of humor, and he liked to throw one-liners like "why do we always focus on the bad things Hitler did?" around. Some time later I was working as a treeplanter deep in northern BC, and when you're stuck with younger people doing manual labor for hours at a time in the hot sun you find yourself just aimlessly blabbing. So I unthinkingly used the line on a Quebecois co-worker who immediately replied with "I know, right?!" Not my best summer.

from the comments:
Coach Berger did not give a wrong answer. Hitler was a great leader. 100% wrong. But almost a whole country followed this lunatic. I find it intriguing Hitlers idea of The Great Race that so many were on the band wagon to join him. How can people now not wonder about that. Hitler was not a Guru or a Self proclaimed prophet just a guy with an idea. Although once Hitlers ball got rolling…. it was hard to get off and rebel.
A leader with an idea and everyone followed. That is the basic answer I think for Coach Berger answer

Then when you actually had the “beer summit,” did President Obama say anything helpful, or was that whole thing pro forma? Oh, that’s interesting. I was at Martha’s Vineyard, and I had been getting instructions from the White House, through Glenn Hutchins. They told me not to wear a bespoke suit. “We don’t want it to be about class.” All of the sudden I was the upper-class black person against the working class. I go, “I’m the victim!” They go, “No, don’t wear one of those suits.” I go: “These are the only suits I have. I’m not going out to Sears and Roebuck and buying a suit.” Then they go, “Do not fly down in a private plane.” Glenn Hutchins owns a private plane. Glenn’s a billionaire. He’s one of my best friends. The only way we could get to Washington was on Glenn’s plane, because there was fog. Anyway, we got to the White House, and we and Sgt. Crowley’s family all got to the library at the same time. I walked over to Sgt. Crowley. He had his kids there, and I said to them: “Hi, I’m Professor Gates. Hope you come to Harvard one day. Maybe you’ll take one of my classes.” Then I said to him, “Can I have a word with you?” He and I went off and did the beer summit ourselves. I said, “Look, I don’t know about you, man, but I just want this to go away.” He goes, “This is a nightmare.” I said to him: “The president has come under attack. Racism’s coming out of the floor. I’m sure you’re a decent person. I forgive you. Let’s move on.” He goes, “That would be the best thing that could happen.” I said, “Maybe we could find a way to lecture about it.” He laughed and said, “Anything I can do to get off the beat.” I realized he was funny. I think that gay people have a sense of who’s homophobic. I think that Jewish people have a sense of who’s anti-Semitic. I definitely think black people — I could walk out there and tell you, “That [ expletive ] is a racist.”And you’re saying you didn’t get that vibe from Sgt. Crowley? I didn’t get that vibe from him. When we were called into the Oval Office, I said to the president, “Mr. President, we had a great conversation in the library.” He said, “Oh, it sounds like it’s all settled.” The actual beer summit was us doing small talk. And the reason Joe Biden was there is that the Cambridge police had insisted that because there were going to be two black guys at the table, they wanted two white guys at the table! They had sent somebody involved in the Cambridge police structure to be there. As we were walking out to the Rose Garden, somehow that guy got pushed to the side, and Joe Biden jumped in the line. That’s what nobody ever figured out: Why is Biden at the table? He was there to be the second white guy.

To me, this case speaks so baldly about the inequitable burdens of evidence required to achieve justice a racist system.
The injustice against Arbury, and the fact of innocence, is only made semi-credible when a (mostly white) audience has consumed videos of his violent and unprovoked murder. (Which, like, why?)
Meanwhile, the McMichaels father/son who hopped in a pickup truck to hunt him down during quarantine, wielding multiple weapons, weren't arrested due to an ostensible lack of probable cause, and are now entitled to a Grand Fucking Jury being convened to offer them all possible fairnesses.

Meanwhile in Los Angeles, the Center Theatre Group - an entertainment complex that includes the Kirk Douglas Theatre and a bunch of other stuff - apparently instituted something they called "staff affinity spaces."
These staff affinity spaces included one for BIPOC rejuvenation, and a separate one for white learning.
This is from an inside source. I am not aware of much more detail.

"This summer, we launched two ongoing, facilitated staff affinity spaces—a space for BIPOC healing and activation and a white learning space."
https://www.centertheatregroup.org/about/social-accountability/latest-updates/
I can see the good intentions there, because theater has a ways to go on POC inclusion. But I can also kind of anticipate the inevitable blowback on whether these affinity spaces are able to use the same water fountains etc etc etc.

Have read that Hitler was a chaotic insecure leader who had his staff intentionally in conflict to stop them plotting against him. So a big influence on t I take it.
Also he was totally deluded about what was happening towards the end. Moving around tank units that had long since been destroyed. I guess at least t didn't quite manage to get the US into War try as he might. But the quixoticism is still pretty high and I'm sure he'll find some more fun over the next couple of weeks.

One really good resource on Race I read this year was Angela Saini's book Superior which looks at the history of race science and shows the major flaws. I.e. why it should be viewed with extreme scepticism since it was set up to explain why the white man was so superior and threw out all the little details as to why he wasn't. She was triggered to write it by seeing a rise in similar thought appearing recently. The book came out in the summer this year.I also read Bruce Pascoe's book Dark Emu which looked into distortion in the Western view of Australian Aboriginal history and culture. Like if one goes into an occupied area in such a way as to destroy the ecosystem and whatever buildings etc are in it one can so easily con oneself that the occupants are rootless nomads. Particularly when it helps your expansionist ideas.
Current read David Olusoga on various ethnicities brought into the First World War and fighting outside Europe.Input has been all too readily ignored.
