Family was a great overlooked comedy that was just as funny at home recently. Can't recommend it enough. Taylor Schilling from Orange is the New Black (which I haven't seen), is the lead, and she's phenomenal. it's from 2018, by Laura Steinel. I can't remember if I've already made this post itt but idc

11 ballots received so far, vs a total last year of 28. No problem moving the date through the weekend if there's any call for it*, but I reckon the OP covered this, and it's unlikely those of us currently unable to concentrate on subtitled drama in shared living rooms are likely to find it easier to do so as weeks or months go by.

donald failson (sic), Thursday, 2 April 2020 22:07 (four years ago) link

well, I'm not working again til Monday.

of course I can't afford all those streams

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 April 2020 22:16 (four years ago) link

however I signed up for a 2-wk free trial at Criterion, and Black Mother is running there.

and I will have time to watch my 'permanently' loaned library DVD of Wild Pear Tree.

If necessary, prioritize Waves.

I'd like an extra day or two myself.

Cherish, Friday, 3 April 2020 14:52 (four years ago) link

everything i've seen/heard about waves makes me certain it would be on my worst of the year

devvvine, Friday, 3 April 2020 14:55 (four years ago) link

So mote it be - ballots due on Tuesday.

Huh. I thought the characters were messy and complicated and real. And I didn't have much room to object, honestly -- I was continually pulled in, overwhelmed.

Cherish, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:02 (four years ago) link

xp - thanks for the extra time

Miami weisse (WmC), Friday, 3 April 2020 16:10 (four years ago) link

Are we expecting confirmation emails Y/N?

or something, Friday, 3 April 2020 20:49 (four years ago) link

re: Waves, neither worst nor at all best -- it won't make it onto my top 20.

Compiling this now.

Thanks for the extension, sic

Dan S, Friday, 3 April 2020 22:02 (four years ago) link

the Brazilian film Invisible Life that won the un certain regard award last year was released today on prime video

Dan S, Friday, 3 April 2020 22:14 (four years ago) link

there were a lot of changes of tone in Waves

Dan S, Saturday, 4 April 2020 00:27 (four years ago) link

I liked that

Dan S, Saturday, 4 April 2020 00:34 (four years ago) link

just saw Greener Grass (available to rent on youtube). i know a couple of you have it as one of the year's worst but i personally loved it and was very amused the entire time. watch if you like unrestrained surrealism of a particularly gaudy hue. or (as tt said) todd solondz. or bunuel at his wackiest. or chris morris' 'jam'. or idk that tim robinson show (but this is imo much better)

ban laggy jazzer (imago), Saturday, 4 April 2020 23:38 (four years ago) link

on Hulu for subscribers.

donald failson (sic), Sunday, 5 April 2020 00:15 (four years ago) link

I loved Greener Grass! So strange, but it hit me just right. Very funny and sad.

Cherish, Sunday, 5 April 2020 00:33 (four years ago) link

The Cave is a 2019 film, no? What with the Oscar nomination and everything.

Frederik B, Sunday, 5 April 2020 09:25 (four years ago) link

are you trying to start fights with yourself now? vote for everything you want to now, the internet might not exist or we could all be dead of capitalism next year

donald failson (sic), Sunday, 5 April 2020 11:12 (four years ago) link

If people are voting for it now, I'll vote for it now, if people want to vote for it next year, I'll vote for it next year. I'm amicable like that.

It's split up in Denmark, it won one award, but us critics can't vote for it until next year.

Frederik B, Sunday, 5 April 2020 11:30 (four years ago) link

Stop trying to read the other kids’ answers, keep your eyes on your own worksheet.

donald failson (sic), Sunday, 5 April 2020 11:49 (four years ago) link

That is so so wrong. Everyone on here should copy answers from other kids. Specifically me, you should all copy my answers.

Frederik B, Sunday, 5 April 2020 11:55 (four years ago) link

Defeats the purpose of a poll

silby, Sunday, 5 April 2020 15:23 (four years ago) link

Cherish, Monday, 6 April 2020 02:04 (four years ago) link

just watched Nightingale, thought it was interesting but not best of the year

Dan S, Monday, 6 April 2020 02:09 (four years ago) link

Reminder that new ballots are due tomorrow. (If anyone who has already submitted wants to revise, just reply to your previous email.) Plenty of film thread regulars are yet to file, from whom it would be good to hear.
