Have you stopped beating your wife?

By phrasing this in the most absolutist way possible, your clear intent is to make one answer inevitable and the other ridiculous. Instead you made the question itself ridiculous, and any answer to it equally open to ridicule.

all this does is troll ilx for reasons that should be beneath you, Οὖτις

I'm not sure what the point of this poll is (are you trying to get a specific user banned?), but this is a risibly false binary. Maybe some people phrase it this way for rhetorical reasons, but it seems reasonable to give people the benefit of the doubt and conclude they mean "all accusations should be taken seriously" sometimes supplemented by "making a false accusation is rarely beneficial to the accuser," both positions that exist to push back against millennia of entrenched, structural opposition

what is a better way of phrasing this question? Many posters here have argued, on various threads, a position similar to this one: 2020 Democratic presidential primary thread, pt 3: life is very long. Is this different from the poll title? I am not trying to make a bad faith argument. I genuinely want to understand the ethical grounding of this position.

like, all this makes sense to me. what I can't figure out is what's supposed to happen *after* you've taken an accusation seriously and some people determine the accusation is credible and others don't. because that seems to be where a lot of knives come out.

I see everybody would rather rush to conclusions about me, which is too bad, cuz I really think there are interesting issues here that are worth untangling but I guess I poisoned the well with bad phrasing or something. sorry.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 16:37 (four years ago) link

I feel like these positions often are discussed in stark binary terms, both here and elsewhere, just thought we could hive off this discussion instead of having it routinely crop up in other threads.
