POLL: Regarding ILX Killfiles (Not Specific ILXors)

btw, if this discussion does start to get personal, admittedly a possibility because some people love to take every chance they get to diss their 'enemies', I'd be thrilled for the mods to lock it and nuke it.

I use ilx on my work computer almost exclusively - which I can't install killfile on - so it's not an option, but even when I used a personal computer that I owned to access ilx - many moons ago - I didn't bother to use killfile. there's lots of posters over the history of ilx that I can see the temptation of killfiling tbh

I have a single digit number blocked, don’t think this thread needs to know my reasons why. I find it improves my experience because I am not getting annoyed by stupid posts and obviously ilx benefit from me not starting fights overall. I’m just not that patient a person, and I find it easier.

Never saw the point of killfiling here and probably wouldn't ever use it. Even when...certain people have pass-agg serial harassed me in the past, it was never a consideration. Maybe if there were truly vile people posting here and moderation was nonexistent. But thankfully that's not the case, and I'd be more likely to just leave if it were.

I've had to killfile nobody at all because I don't like their posts. The two posters who annoyed me a bit when I came here later became two of my favourites. God knows I have been a very annoying person on the internet myself in the past, hope I have improved a bit, but if I have it really took a while.

Yeah, that's an important point: there are people here and in other online haunts who I've disliked or had legit beef with and who I've eventually come to appreciate as time went by. Just throwing up a big ol' perpetual NOPE precludes the possibility of future amity.

First option, easily. Honestly, the idea strikes me as silly. (I was supposedly killfiled myself once; I took great satisfaction in referring to having been filekilled.)

Never used it, generally prefer my reality unfiltered and have never gotten annoyed or irritated enough to want to go through the trouble.

I'm kind of between the first and second options. I've never killfiled anyone and never felt the need to, but I could also imagine that I might want to at some point? Honestly, I've never really understood how it works and have assumed that it would be kind of complicated to implement, so that probably also factors into my feelings on it.

i killfiled one person early in the pandemic then turned it off, it's fine. i think i was stressing a lot at that particular time.

Now that I think about it, if I ever killfiled someone, I feel like I'd probably be constantly curious about what I might be missing. Especially in threads where other people were engaging with the person's posts.

I’ve never killfiled, but I’ve used block poster on zing a few times. Even then I often click through to read the post so it’s kind of self-defeating

No one killfiled. In the context of a thread it doesn't make any sense to me. Anyone particulaly irritating is going to be quoted by someone else anyway. Most of the problems with killfileable people in any context (not here specifically) isn't that person themselves but the responses from other people responding to what they say

If I can deal with killfileable people in my extended family I can manage it elsewhere

Haven't felt the need for it for a few years now.

I got as far as downloading the browser extension once, but never actually killfiled the user who was irritating me at the time.

I tried it out once years ago to see if I could get it to work, then immediately un-killfiled that poster and haven't used it since.

I have currently kf'd 16 posters. If I couldn't, I'd just quit this place. If I end up kf'ing many more posters, I may as well quit this place.

If I just quit ILE I'd have essentially no need for kf, but I'm still interested in a few things on it, just not when things turn snide & snipey.

All in all, nü-ILX is the friendliest, least antagonistic, most welcoming general discussion forum I've ever come across.

there should also be a shillfile where you pick an ilxor you like a lot and you see their posts in a font 5 times as big as everybody else, and all posts where they act poorly or break forum rules are deleted.

I'm just glad killfile wasn't an option back when I was a stupid twentysomething posting around these parts because if it had been, half of ILX would have killfiled me for certain (and I would have deserved such a fate). But no, I have never used it and would never consider using it, because I'm living proof that there's always room for [self-]improvement.

The posts we have now are fifth generation stars ito evolution of what and how we discuss and do not provide the bang required

Posts are shorter, as posters take a more nervy footing on anything controversial the better to spring away leveretesque under challenge

No two posters of even minor god capacity now dwell upon this site who so oppose each other on a matters or topics with the heft to see killingblows exchanged its all nods from the other field or a spar at best

Lighter posters ofc are frequently summarily mobbed and rent

But essentially its that a discussion rarely gets to the heat and gravity where a poster youd hateread is posting material youd hateread in form long enough for you to either spot it coming or realise early doors they were 'at it' and you should go make a cuppa, splash some water on your face send the wife on a message and fuckin go back and fuckin really relish reading it in full fury mode

Blame Twitter for the passing of ILX long form – Twitter and a semblance of collective maturity gained over two decades, even as the cast of sad socks is no longer the same.

Actually there is one id killfile but genuinely without rancour its because of absolutely harmless but fairly irritating no-content posts that i dont personally find are counterbalanced in other ways (ime this last part is very rare around here, most people are bringing something good to the table)

Telling that if this poster were someone i disliked id be less likely to killfile. Content is content, im here for entertainment.
