Speaks for itself, really. As indicated by our dollar votes, these are our most beloved actors. So the names should come as no surprise.

I had the opportunity while compiling this poll to find out who Bob Bergen (the #5 highest-grossing actor of all time) is but I didn't and so I still have no idea.

voted for tudyk in a heartbeat

sam jackson totally deserves this though

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Friday, 5 February 2021 16:31 (three years ago) link

I wonder how many background actors have grossed comparable sums by this definition.

jmm, Friday, 5 February 2021 16:32 (three years ago) link

bergen and welker are both voice actors

sarahell, Friday, 5 February 2021 17:23 (three years ago) link

I knew about Welker and would've guess the same of Bergen but preferred to assume he was someone who'd done some passing bit part in every Harry Potter (Butter Beer Proprietor) and LotR (Scowling Elf #4) and Star War (Mufflorp Binglebop).

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 February 2021 17:30 (three years ago) link

Andy Serkis and Warwick Davis? Really?

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Friday, 5 February 2021 18:09 (three years ago) link

And Paul Bettany? Is there something going on here we should know about?

voting for samuel l. so he doesn't yell at me

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Friday, 5 February 2021 18:39 (three years ago) link

Warwick Davis was in all the Harry Potter movies and most of the Star Wars movies. I'm actually surprised he wasn't higher. Serkis was in the LOTR movies and 2 of the 3 Star Wars sequels.

I'd imagine 90%+ of Bettany's gross is from Marvel films (as Jarvis/Vision)

I voted Samuel L

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 5 February 2021 18:57 (three years ago) link

Huh. At one point Bill Paxton ranked pretty high, thanks to Cameron connection, and Harrison Ford of course. Which of these have no connection to Star Wars or Marvel? Ratzenberger (that's all Pixar cameos, of course), The Rock ... and the two cartoon voice actors, Bob Bergen and Frank Welker? Is that it?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 February 2021 19:01 (three years ago) link

adjust this for inflation imo

mookieproof, Friday, 5 February 2021 19:05 (three years ago) link

The Rock is actually one of the more surprising entries given the metrics we're working with. Is that all for Fast & Furious-es and, what, Moana? Are there more Dwayne Johnson hypermegablockbusters that I'm forgetting?

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 February 2021 19:10 (three years ago) link

Jumanji nearly hit $1 billion worldwide

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 5 February 2021 19:16 (three years ago) link

josh, ratzenberger also had a small role in empire strikes back (which doesn't rank that highly on highest-grossing films list anymore, but still)

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Friday, 5 February 2021 19:17 (three years ago) link

Also, as far as I know Alan Tudyk wasn't in any Marvel movies and was only in 1 Star Wars movie. Not sure why he's so high up to be honest.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 5 February 2021 19:18 (three years ago) link

dodgeball

nxd, Friday, 5 February 2021 19:20 (three years ago) link

Alright, Tudyk is the first of these I've bothered to actually look up, and it appears that he's also been very lucky in his choice of voice roles (multiple Disneys, Ice Ages, and Squeakquels).

That's right, Ratzenberger is an imperial dude in Empire, right?

Alan Tudyk surprised me a bit, too, but I guess all it takes it a Transformers here, an Ice Age there ... slow and steady wins the race.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 February 2021 19:28 (three years ago) link

crossed out the wrong Transformer: the wiki talk page says he's miscredited as Hot Rod

Was confused by this list until I realized it was really "Who's been in the most Marvel movies".

Darin, Friday, 5 February 2021 19:41 (three years ago) link

sam jackson totally deserves this though

tbc no one deserves this much money, but though he's mostly just been coasting on star power for a while he really has been great in an astounding number of movies

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Friday, 5 February 2021 19:44 (three years ago) link

I'd be interested in knowing who would top a similar non-acting list. There's probably some dolly grip out there who's super-smug about having worked on the most billion-dollar movies.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 February 2021 19:44 (three years ago) link

I'd guess John Williams would be very near the number one spot for non-actors, right?

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 February 2021 19:45 (three years ago) link

tbc no one deserves this much money

I mean part of why I found the list hilarious is that it isn't even about how much money the actors made, just how much the movies they were in grossed.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 February 2021 19:47 (three years ago) link

The secret to being a great actor is either to be an Avenger or be in at least two mega-franchises.

jmm, Friday, 5 February 2021 19:52 (three years ago) link

xpost Gotta be Williams, between Star Wars and Harry Potter alone. Plus other Spielberg.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 February 2021 19:53 (three years ago) link

Or Spielberg himself. Or, like, Kathleen Kennedy or something.
