are you aware of stuff lately?

I personally have cut back even further on being aware of stuff in 2021, I am at historic lows of knowing what is going on. How about you, are you more or less aware of stuff?

Canon in Deez (silby), Friday, 9 April 2021 06:22 (three years ago) link

Like I know stuff is happening all the time, but even when I do become glancingly aware of something, I don’t tend to make the slightest effort to find out what is up with it. I just prefer not to

Canon in Deez (silby), Friday, 9 April 2021 06:27 (three years ago) link

I am increasingly aware of cities

cherry blossom, Friday, 9 April 2021 06:51 (three years ago) link

I used to spend December being aware of stuff every year, now I just don't have the time, in a decade or so I hope to catch up.

I've been painfully aware of my anxiety induced acid reflux for the past three months.

I blame this on being more aware of external stuff than I normally am.

Im aware of stuff but im gone behind on things and was never really up to speed on suchlike

Trying to shift more things from the stuff I feel compelled to be aware of to the stuff I do not want to be aware of pile, a recent success is the new (?) space jam (?) movie (?).

Probably more aware of politics than I'd like to be.

Definitley less aware of music than I'd like to be but gotta kinda accept that I'm never gonna be as aware as when I was 21.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 9 April 2021 10:00 (three years ago) link

I am still aware of stuff, it’s just different

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Friday, 9 April 2021 10:05 (three years ago) link

I haven't been aware of much football, not that I'm normally super aware of it anyway but not catching the odd match in the pub these days and hearing folks natter about their teams means I'm completely out the loop, I'm kinda missing it in funny way. I hear West Ham have been alright this season.

Diggin Holes (Ste), Friday, 9 April 2021 10:37 (three years ago) link

Yeah, good example tbh

your own personal qanon (darraghmac), Friday, 9 April 2021 11:07 (three years ago) link

I'm increasingly aware of stuff that transpired within the span of humankind's residence upon planet earth but there's definitely been a precipitous decline in my awareness of stuff transpiring in the present day.

Slithering free of that particular beast may be one of the few legitimate accomplishments of my adult life. You can always circle back around after the season's over to find out who all of the Masked Singers were. Pretty sure that's an old school zen koan.

I am much more aware of the dogs in my neighborhood now than i was a year ago ... I started coming up with a comparison of the local common dog breeds to signs of the zodiac. I saw the cattle dog/Virgo yesterday riding in a car with its head out the window, but unlike the standard dog that looks like it is living its best life while sticking its head out of the window of a moving car, Virgo cattle dog looked a bit unsure, like "should I be doing this?" "Am I doing this right?" "Is this dangerous kinda?"

Cancer - french bulldog
Leo - pomeranian
Virgo - cattle dog
Libra - corgi
Scorpio - pitbull
Sagittarius - dogs on lost dog flyers
Capricorn - labradors
Aquarius - dogs that look like the one in the "can this dog in a tinfoil hat get more fans than Glenn Beck" meme; scottie dogs maybe as well?
Pisces - greyhounds and similar

I have spent the last 4 months completely off the grid, reset my phone in an attempt to delete every number I've ever had (didn't work) and haven't spoken to my friends or family in that time. I get my news from the old lady with whom I live and the college newspaper in the town where I live, but that's just college news. Sometimes the TV is on. Sometimes I catch the trial. What's there to be aware of? What else is happening? Covid, George Floyd, so US-centric my world is.

Cancer - french bulldog

i can confirm this

I’m so afraid of that happening. I read a lot and Iove learning (about) new/old stuff but I worry about when my brain can’t handle it anymore.

brimstead, Friday, 9 April 2021 19:14 (three years ago) link

I'm nowhere near that point, my energies just finally got switched from keeping up to working through the backlog. And guys: there's so much backlog. Do u even know how much stuff humans did before today, it's wild.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Friday, 9 April 2021 19:20 (three years ago) link

See “the backlog” is an interesting aspect to this question to me bc if you take a moment to think about the scope and scale of that backlog it’s intimidating but if you think about it more it’s immensely freeing, the implausibility of even reading every book you’ve ever heard mentioned as a classic touchstone of Western Civilization means you can replace FOMO with COMO (certainty of missing out) and just vibe

Canon in Deez (silby), Friday, 9 April 2021 19:27 (three years ago) link

Exactly. Embracing the fact that I'll only ever be a stone skipping across the surface.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Friday, 9 April 2021 19:29 (three years ago) link

Whereas “the firehose” of being aware of stuff that’s happening presently has a discursive style that affords you no such discretion, the merest glance in the direction of it subjects you simultaneously to all of it, making you aware of stuff, in my experience

Canon in Deez (silby), Friday, 9 April 2021 19:30 (three years ago) link

I think re: silby re: COMO, there’s a degree of competition behind this feeling like we need to be aware of everything all the time. I have to say that being offline for months has made me appreciate the things that come to my attention in a way that does not include reading or watching a movie for the sake of having something to talk about or being able to say I have read/watched the thing. There is something precious about, just you know, pulling this out of thin air, not talking to my ex in half a year and suddenly remembering he was watching a show based off of a novel, being in a bookstore, and suddenly catching that novel out of the corner of my eye.

very avant-garde (Variablearea), Friday, 9 April 2021 19:47 (three years ago) link

I’m a little too knowledgeable about stuff, which makes me anxious but not always pessimistic.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Friday, 9 April 2021 19:58 (three years ago) link

used to be pretty goddamn aware of stuff -- more or less kept up with nyer/nyrb/baffler/economist/foreign affairs (spare me the critiques, thx & lol). when bush was reelected in 2004 i shut down for a bit, but picked it up again in a year or so

when trump won, i shut down completely -- what, after all, was the point of learning facts about the world when facts meant nothing? but things haven't improved since his loss.

where trump once bloomed, a thousand gaetzs grow. and they refuse to stop fighting because like America, they're fighters and rapists and checkmate, libtards

i mean, i still vote in local primary elections ffs. honestly not sure where i was headed with this except to say that this country is unutterably stupid and depressing

Just realized I’m unaware of who won the super bowl this year, which I guess I’m usually not aware of this for very long or at all in any given year, but it’s nice to not be aware of it. I think maybe it was Tom Brady but it could’ve been not Tom Brady. Anyway he’s not a Patriot anymore he plays for like St Petersburg or something. Tampa? I don’t know.

I'm often not even aware of what friends and fam are up to let alone things in the world, because covid rendered me an agoraphobic hermit who has lost the ability to give a shit about anything going on anywhere.

I'll be one of those people found dead in my room 6 months after it happened because nobody noticed.

eight months pass...

I live in Florida and I stopped paying attention to the news more or less when it became a certainty that COVID was sticking around and nobody in government gave a fuck.

Also my attention up until recently had been commanded by Instagram and my algorithm is so fucked that I was absorbed mostly with the cycle of reels that permeate my feed and not getting any actual updates from my friends. Even when I did it was like an obsession and totally non-nourishing for my brain so I’m taking a break. Memes were practically my only source of news.

I do feel like I’m uninformed and basically living under a rock but I think a lot of that has to do with comparing myself against others and how they seem to know a whole lot about everything. I also recently started taking adhd medication so maybe I’ve just been too scatterbrained to pay attention.
