Wayne: Here we are, at Piccadilly Circus!

Garth: Wow, what a shitty circus.

Wayne: Good call. There's no animals or clowns! What a ripoff!

Wayne: Jim, why was I supposed to put on this concert?

Jim: Because you had to learn that it doesn't matter what you do, Cassandra loves you for who you are and that, being an adult means facing responsibility yet still taking the time to have fun.

Wayne: Right, its like coming home on Friday night and doing your homework right away so that your Saturday night is free to just party.

Jim: No I like the way I said it better.

I was the exact right age (13) for the first one when it came out; saw it twice in theatres and bought it on laserdisc (!). Haven't seen the second one since it played in theatres, but I definitely remember it being a lesser version of the first, and the only gag I really remember was the not-very-funny Doors parody.

this is pretty amazing:

Myers' original script for Wayne's World 2 had Wayne and Garth forming their own country and seceding from the US after finding an ancient scroll, in a story taken from the 1949 British comedy Passport to Pimlico. This version was well into pre-production before it came to light that the studio had no idea the script was based on a previous film and thus had not obtained the rights to Passport to Pimlico. Production was immediately halted—director Surjik said: "I could hear the chainsaws literally chopping the sets down." Studio executive Sherry Lansing was reportedly furious with Myers and threatened to ruin his life and career if he did not immediately produce a new script.

saw both of these in the cinema, and was pretty young at the time (i think 8 when the first film came out) and loved them both. the first one holds up better imo, i did find the sequel a little disappointing when rewatching a few years ago

First one features one of my favorites jokes:

Wayne: Hey Tiny, who's playing?
Tiny: The Shitty Beatles.
Wayne: The Shitty Beatles? Are they any good?
Tiny: No, man, they suck.

And then I think they mess up the joke a little by doing more, but that exchange is A+.

Rob Lowe walking bow-legged after his cavity search was pretty classic in the first one.

Wayne yelling at Chris Farley during the roadie training was one of my favorite moments from the second.

but the second for me wins purely for one moment...

Garth (addressing crowd on mic awkwardly): Welcome....to....Aurora.
Concertgoer (screamed): EAT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

1 bored me for a while during the "things fall apart for Wayne/Garth" section, which bent a bit more dramatic than I think they intended. also do not like Crucial Taunt's version of Ballroom Blitz at allllll.

still like it, but I really preferred 2's "dgaf silliness". especially Del Preston's unhinged roadie character.

especially Del Preston's unhinged roadie character.

This scene introduced the phrase "nut bar" to my vocabulary, and it has never left.

elvis i had never seen any of those! didn't know it pre-dated SNL, although now it makes sense. to my perspective watching, growing up, it arrived as a fully formed idea, so it's pretty neat to see how different the wayne character started, even while still maintaining many very recognizable catchphrases and physical behaviors from the beginning.

Somehow I've never seen the 2nd one. And I was a huge early 90s SNL fan on general. I even had the WW book! I guess I'd heard negative reviews of the sequel.

may go 2 for sentimental reasons. i think i somehow saw it before the first film through no fault of my own. possibly also my first introduction into the weird and wonderful world of walken.

The story of the Dieter movie is fascinating

The movie was all set up to film in the summer of 2000 with first-time director Bo Welch, producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, and actors Will Ferrell, Jack Black, and David Hasselhoff signed on and millions spent on preproduction costs. Myers, unhappy with the script (which he co-wrote), backed out of the project and relinquished his $20 million salary, causing Howard and Grazer’s company Imagine and the studio, Universal, to slap him with a pair of multimillion dollar lawsuits. Myers filed a countersuit and said the studio was trying to rush him into filming a “fundamentally flawed” script and that he didn’t want to “cheat moviegoers who pay their hard-earned money to see my work.” Steven Spielberg, who wasn’t involved in the project, even stepped in to try to get everyone to reach an agreement without lawyers but to no avail.

Can't believe anyone would plump for 2 over 1, 2 has it's moments(most involving Danny Brown) but was clearly thrown together and you can tell no-one's heart was really in it.

My sister and I were massively into the first film, we recorded it one when it was on TV over Christmas and watched it over and over. I was really hyped for the sequel but there was a lingering feeling of disappointment and watching it again recently I could see why, it's pretty much a bunch of slapped-together scenes and gags looking for a decent plot that isn't there.

"Spaghetti" Thompson (Pheeel), Thursday, 17 June 2021 17:29 (two years ago) link

i agree completely, the fact that myers had written another script that couldn't be used and cobbled together a new one last minute makes the sequel make more sense to me now

Like just how huge Myers was at the time, following up three Austin Powers movies and three Shrek movies, two of the most beloved original characters in forever. Plus Myers being like a serious art-house film nerd into Fellini and Truffaut and whatever. Plus like the goodwill to get cameos from everyone, including John Oliver, Stephen Colbert and Samantha Bee and Kanye West. And it was so bad that he refused to talk about it for years, it's fascinating

Myers also used to do Wayne on local community cable stations in the mid-80s (even lower-budget than those City Limits clips). He appeared on one comedy show with a live audience, and literally no-one was laughing.
I can't venture an opinion on his films because he is literally the Anti-Comedian to me, I become paralyzed with embarrassment for him every time he starts one of his routines.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 02:05 (two years ago) link

When an anticomedian comes into direct contact with a comedian is there an explosive release of cosmic energy? or do they just make the audience really uneasy?

Wayne's World 2 has some funny moments, and it is underrated, but it just copies way too many jokes from the first movie to ever consider voting it over the original. That being said I do still get a chuckle of out "Old Man Fashioning a Kayak out of a Log" and "A great big bloody bengal tiger"
