Fast & Furious franchise vs. Mission: Impossible franchise

...well now I want a crossover film.

if vin diesel and tom cruise ever made physical contact it would create a black hole of self-serious intensity that would destroy life as we know it

imo nothing tops F&F for gonzo action & soap-operatics. But I appreciate how MI has adopted F&F's "no character left behind" approach to accreting ensemble members as the movies go on. I'm less familiar with the MI franchise, have they done the thing F&F has done where even villains get generously absorbed to the ensemble of good guys (incl villains who have actively killed other major characters) as the movies go on?

I also love the arc of F&F so much, how the ridiculousness has increased exponentially since the first movie. Tom Cruise has always been a semi-superheroic secret agent since the first MI, but (for example) Ludacris' character was introduced as an auto parts dealer in the 2nd movie, and by #9 its just accepted that he's one of the worlds most elite hackers, for reasons that are never really explained.

another similarity - it wasn't until the fourth movie that each franchise really perfected its formula (though MI3 is a lot closer than Tokyo Drift)

There's no way I'll be able to watch all of these in a week. I think I've seen the first 4 MI's and just the first FF.

when they introduced The Rock's character as some sort of elite no-nonsense FBI agent and showed him doing The People's Eyebrow in his employee photo I knew this was going to be one of the greatest franchises of all time

m:i is way more consistent and i think its best movie (ghost protocol?????) is better than the best f&f movie (either 5 or 6), and what people largely consider the worst m:i movie (2, even though it's fucking AWESOME) is a thousand times better than the worst f&f movie (4)

voted m:i in a heartbeat even though I have never seen a the fast and the furious movie

one advantage F&F has is letting the women characters kick ass. i've rewatched the first three M:I movies this week and even the women they introduce as bad-asses don't really get to do very much action-wise.

i thought MI3 was pretty solid. at least it feels more in line with the later MI movies than the first two, which if you watch them now feel like they were made in the middle ages

(though they're fun in their own way)

I rewatched the first one recently, the script is not great but it has a lot of top tier de Palma touches that are hard not to love

the three big action sequences in the first one all hold up well

the first one is great, it's so quiet

the cross-cutting during the revelatory dialogue between cruise and jon voight is one of my favorite things that's ever happened in a film

it was the first spy film i ever saw that felt like a spy film i.e. not at all as loud and obvious as any given james bond film

I can never tell if jon voight is bored out of his fucking mind or just trying to be low key but it works for the movie

great casting between these two franchises btw, aside from billy crudup in mi3

I feel like when the writers' room assembles for an F&F movie, any idea that doesn't generate an "Oh, COME ON" gets rejected.

I'm kinda leaning toward F&F because one of the reasons it's been so successful IMO isn't just the ludicrousness (or the Ludacris-ness), but also the fact that so many of its leads are nonwhite people. The M:I series, as fun as it is, still holds onto that "white people run the world" spy-movie worldview.

yeah that's true (despite ving rhames being the only actor to be in all the MI movies aside from tom cruise). i think one factor in the lack of representation in MI is that they aren't really as ensemble-y as F&F - cruise usually has a team but he's the star and doing most of the action. diesel, despite his high self-esteem, is better at sharing the spotlight, and him not really being in two of the movies made him less the de-facto star of the series.

I agree with everything so far itt, tho ive never seen anything beyond F&F1 the trailers do the job.

MI is clear by some distance, and 3 is the worst because it absolutely clumps and rarely charms.

The first is a mid 90s thriller masterpiece and Ghost Protocol is in the top 5 action movies of the decade imo

2 is only bad because its an MI movie when it is in all other ways a nic cage ghost rider movie

on a rewatch of MI2 last year i had a hard time making it all the way through tbh, partly bc of how shitty it looked & was edited. seems like it falls right square in that cursed era when CGI became ubiquitous but still looked really cheap & terrible, plus the slo mo didnt help

MI2 looks horrible, im not sure its CGI more than yes slo mo and also the lens/lighting choices (nb i am not a technician) but it looks like an MTV2 video for long periods of time

my beef with GP is it peaks early and the climax is pretty bleh

constantly shifting slate of directors to ramp up the excitement

nobody would have complaints about MI2 being a weird outlier if they'd continued hiring actual directors, so every film felt like the product of a different vision. (I'm fine with five out of eight being shaped by the bloke who's ended up doing them, it's just that getting a TV guy to make an exceedingly bland and pointless third one means ppl don't appresh 2 for being a bonkersfest by a director who pretended not to speak English so he wouldn't have to deal with Tom Cruise on set.)

Only slightly, in that Cruise and his team are always getting disbarred and having to go rogue to save the world, then the high-ranking government official who shut them down in that movie occasionally returns to say "you can't shut down the impossible mission force, they saved the world!" in another movie.

not even 9 - he's an auto parts dealer in #2, returns in #5 when "we need a tech guy" to read some blueprints and crack a safe, and then by the start of #6 is a super-hacker.

went to a 25th anniversary screening last month and thought the most out-of-place stuff was the dodgy CGI and nonsensical physics in the helicopter train tunnel chase. (the completely made-up internet probably works better today, with new viewers having no idea what usenet even was, let alone how it worked.)

imo McQuarrie gets the pacing formula really perf in Rogue and Fallout: twenty minutes of a setpiece good enough to anchor a whole film, two minutes of catching your breath, three minutes with talking in to establish the next macguffin, then another twenty minutes of a setpiece good enough to anchor a whole film.

Ghost Protes totally peters out at the end, but it and Fallout do both involve Cruise plummeting directly at the villain in a huge chunk of metal. Fallout does a much better job of integrating the rest-of-the-team's complementary mission.

that is a spoiler I knew and was presumptively counting as one of the above instances

#6 has the daughter of a character from #1 too, but it's an easter egg rather than a plot point

I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if it ended up being anything more than an easter egg tbh, the cast is ridiculous

i have only seen the first M:I and am still pissed that kristen scott thomas got killed right away

I think the character is returning but doubt they will even refer to her parentage again, let alone make anything of it - the Missions are very good at not requiring anyone to know anything from the earlier films in order to follow a new one.

Tangential, but I love how the soundtracks went Britpop leaning (Massive Attack, Pulp, Cast, Longpigs, Skunk Anansie, them from U2 on the theme song) on the first to primarily nu-metal and adjacent on the second (Limp Bizkit, Buckcherry, Godsmack, Rob Zombie, Uncle Kracker).

First two MI soundtracks that is.

Other than 'Saving Private Ryan' and Groot- I have never seen any Vin Diesel movies.

Is MI2 the one that has the big action scene on the bullet train? That was some early ugly CGI.

Really, it's quite impressive that they've maintained such a high qualitative level for so long. Was a time when I thought Bourne might pull off that trick but then the Bourne-less Bourne happened (erk) followed by the very unfortunate Re-Bourne-ening (uggggh)

(Not to mention the Bourne-less Bourne tv show, which I hope the entire world has agreed to disavow)

Bourne 2 and 3 are OK, they have their moments, but the original is the only one I can still watch all the way through.
