A Separation

A couple of these are among the most hypnotically gorgeous movies I've ever seen. "Winged Migration," "House of Flying Daggers," "The City of Lost Children" ...

Think I've only seen eight...The Fog of War.

seen 12 and it might be Paprika, though I suspect I've missed the best ones (e.g., none on Alfred's list)

It's kinda tough to get a bean on their flavor profile from this selection

Probably one or the other of the two movies listed here that they distributed in '99 -- Run Lola Run or American Movie.

I could see revisiting Lola being fun now

Pollock was a big milestone in my realizing I hate biopics

rewatched RLR in the past year, it's not great though the intense ninetiesness of it was fun

most of these could be fairly described as 'oscar bait' yes?

I rewatched RLR last year, too, and it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered it, but it was still fun and funnier than I remembered it. Plus I had forgotten a lot of it.

Dunno if I'd consider most of these Oscar bait in the cynical sense, but most of these at least boast an imprimatur of quality.

Another Year. I do remember quite liking Junebug at the time, so I'll give that one a rewatch this month.

The White Ribbon, not because I loved it but because the other four I watched just left vague impressions. Pollock was about as pointless a movie as I've ever seen.

Animal Kingdom or Un Prophete for me

Seen about half of these, and there's probably 10 movies here that I'd be happy to rewatch anytime. Will likely be voting Another Year, with A Separation close 2nd

I've seen 16. Probably going to vote for Persepolis (just recently re-watched it as Ms. T. hadn't seen it) but could just as easily vote for Orlando, City Of Lost Children, Nine Queens, The Illusionist, or A Separation

When I saw A Prophet, an old guy sitting two seats from me got up and angrily stormed in and out of the theater like 3 times during especially violent parts.

rewatched and it's actually really bad. awful soundtrack, very distracting. robert wyatt appears at the beginning and the end, not his best work unfortunately. some cool footage here and there but really cheesy "story episodes" some of which are obviously staged. we were spoiled by planet earth a few years later. generally really dislike this type of nature documentary now. straight-up unedited flight footage of birds for 90 minutes would be so much better than this random-ass hodgepodge of highlight reels tied together by the most basic interpretation of what a migration "means." herzog got it right in his penguin documentary by focusing on the mystery.
