Probably a bunch of Wallys in these parts but Andre was right about the fascists

It's a weird realization when you suddenly find yourself older than Wally.

"Now I'm 36, and all I think about is money."

So many great moments. I love this little passive-aggressive dig from Andre - he sees through Wally's detective act.

Wally: God. Yeah, I remember George told me he'd seen you around that time. He said you looked like you’d come back from a war.

Andre: Yeah, I remember meeting him. He asked me a lot of friendly questions. I think I called you up, too, that summer, didn't I?

Wally: Huh. I think I was... out of town.

I'm more of a Wally, for sure, but Andre has the best lines. "That masculine love of a certain kind of oily muscle."

I watched this probably once a week during a period in university. I pretty much have the whole thing memorized.

Wally; but as someone suggested, they're two sides of a yet-to-be integrated personality.

My most recent viewing I was struck that Wally's monologue in v.o. over his trip to the restaurant is just exceedingly, cruelly funny, these little digs about waking up at the crack of 10am and having the rent paid by his girlfriend waiting tables.

the conversation is about how to be alive in a world full of mechanized death, is how I break it down to an extent

that's about right. I need to watch it again.

I rate Malle's films higher than most. Dunno what his rep is 'round here.

I love Le Feu Follet and, other than Atlantic City, haven't seen any that were less than interesting.

You didn't like Atlantic City? Un-possible!

We discussed it last year:

I don't care that the characters were cynical, but the film seemed to encourage us to agree, "yup, there's no moral way to get along, what can you do but sell drugs?"

Another great moment: the look of terror on Wally's face when Andre starts laughing crazily and he catches a glance from the old waiter.

Is it freezing cold in that restaurant or what? They never take their jumper/coat off.

I'm def more of an Andre, this has the makings of the weirdest Buzzfeed quiz ever

Okay, now: I didn't talk with people about it, because they'd think I was weird. But I felt that this creature was somehow coming to comfort me. That somehow he was appearing to say: "Well! You may feel low, and you might not be able to create a play right now. But look what can come to you, on Christmas eve! Hang on, old friend! I may seem weird to you, but on these weird voyages, weird creatures appear! It's part of the journey. You're okay! Hang in there!"
