news from my ipod

I still own an ipod nano. It is exclusively for listening to podcasts, I never use it to browse the internet, I don't have any account associated to it. However, it has a news app (pocket, I think?), and due to a lack of info on what I might be interested in, it just flails about wildly trying to find things I will click on, which ofc I never do.

Right now it has suggested:

From psychedelics to hot flings: what really happens on hen nights. Plus: the end of "Bennifer" and the problem with sandals.

I will keep you all updated on further developments.

Is anyone else following the resurgence of ipod parts for modernizing & customizing build outs? I have an ipod and a mini and I'm interested in rehabbing them but I don't know if I have the skills.

The biggest problem might be that I don't think I have a computer that will run the software to sync with it. That might be a problem.

More middle aged cocaine users are dying: here's why. Love salmon for dinner? You might not after reading this.

Well between those two that's my weekend plans ruined.

As mentioned passim I recently passed my motorcycle test, and I've been binging on Fortnine, a YouTube channel from Canada that acts as a gateway drug for motorcycling. It's slick, extremely good-looking, and unlike most professional YouTube channels it's not insufferably smug and upbeat.

They covered the "why you should freeze your clothes" aspect in one of their videos. Supposedly you can eliminate odours from your motorcycle gear by putting it in the freezer, thus killing off the odour-causing bacteria.

But the presenter's mother is a microbiologist, and she pointed out that low temperatures are bacteriostatic rather than bacteriocidal, e.g. they just render the bacteria dormant. So it doesn't work.

If you really want to kill bacteria you have to starve it, dehydrate it, subject it to strong acid, crush it, burst it, or oxygenate the fuck out of it:

And as Peter Gabriel pointed out in "Biko", it's a lot easier to blow out a candle than it is to blow out a spark, e.g. you have to kill the bacteria quickly otherwise you're back to square one. An unexpectedly practical piece of advice from Peter Gabriel there.

Fortnine is weirdly slick, much better than it needs to be in a way that sort of bugs me.
