Help Test Zing for Android

Hello Android users! I've made a version of the iPhone ilx client Zing and I'd like some help testing. If you're willing can you send me your gmail address and I'll add you to the test group? just drop a line to stet at ilxor dot com and I'll add you.

I'm in (will email). But what's the difference between Flagging and Zing?

For the curious it looks a bit like this:

and does more-or-less everything iOS Zing does - posting, bookmarks, search, polls, themes, dark mode etc. It also works properly on foldables.

xp they both do the same thing essentially, but while Flagging is a fine Lukas product, Zing is just my attempt to see if I could make something for Android (just like Mac Zing and iOS Zing were me trying to figure out how to code for those platforms).

no this is good, I haven't had as much time as I'd like to do Flagging stuff now that my job no longer involves Android. I will keep it around as long as people want to use it but the more the merrier.

I'm struggling with bookmarks: I can add them but I can't seem to remove them or even consistently see them (drag down on the list of boards and it sometimes shows one of them) ?

I have bookmarks in several threads but there's only one 1 the list (that now suddenly remains visible above the Activity screen, where I couldn't make it appear earlier)

I may just be too dumb to understand bookmarks - now they're gone again and I don't know how I did that

So bookmarks only show up when a thread has new messages posted after the post you bookmarked. They’re really a way of keeping updated. Once you’ve set the bookmark, that thread should vanish from the list until it gets new posts.

One confusing thing is the “Show All Bookmarks” bit currently only shows you updated bookmarks, which won’t be helping with the confusion.

I posted a Bluesky link in the Geese thread, but when I click on it it doesn't open the site, just gives me the Bluesky logo.

I deleted my bookmarks in a browser but I can't seem to do it in Zing (the lil bookmark inside a thread stays filled once clicked, clicking on it again doesn't remove the selection)

hold on, if you drag that screen with the butterfly to the left it says Javascript Required

Have added all the new testers who message me (thank you!) and am taking a look at the Javascript thing now

I still manage to accidentally add bookmarks by clicking on messages the wrong way somehow - and no idea how to remove them except via a browser. (I know it's probably by clicking on the bookmark icon inside a thread but that doesn't deselect it for me)

Yeah there isn’t actually a way to remove them in Zing yet - on the list!

If it helps in the new version go to settings and turn off swipe gestures

Turning off swipe gestures turns them off for threads but not bookmarks, I've accidentally deleted a couple of bookmarks when scrolling down (skill issue).

I like a question/answer formatting of the search and it seems to find posts fine but the click through to them doesn't take you there (of the two examples I tried one took you to the end of the thread and the other took you to the end of the calendar year the post was in.

I think that’s a server-side problem, this happens on iOS too. Looking

Just posted a multiple quote post in the MapTap thread - post preview wasn't showing the quote, maybe something to do with it being after some other text?

I've come so close to doing this myself multiple times: if you accidentally swipe left to right on a post it quotes it in the composer and it's hard to notice.

oh that's how that happens! I never noticed the right/left swipe options

Can anybody else see YouTube embeds? All of them come up with errors for me.

i've seen some weird behaviour with links. instagram says 'web page not available', guardian links load but then i can't scroll them?!

The Independent links are acting strange? Can't scroll down past the picture. Scroll to the right for more articles where you can't scroll down either. (unless it's some setting on my phone? Works in the old app, though)

Oh that’s weird. I think I’ll have links open in the browser not the app.

maybe it only works with certain browsers? I use Vivaldi (chromium engine)

Very weird one, I have the MapTap thread booked but it stopped showing on the splash page, I have to click through to "show all bookmarks" to see that it's been updated.

do you have more than 10 bookmarks? I limited the list to that for the sake of those folks who have loads

lol I haven't been checking this thread but finally worked out today that only 10 of my bookmarked threads showed and also how to remove the bookmark from a thread. I'm being a very lazy tester
