i was just reading abt the GIANT OF KANDAHAR, encountered outside a cave by US special forces in the mountans of afghanistan in 2002: he was 12-15 ft tall with red hair, six fingers on each hand, and two rows of teeth for some reason

he killed a soldier with a spear but was gunned down: the authorities took the body away and made the troops all sign NDAs

Lots of exciting 3hr+ YouTube videos you need to catch up on re: Giants / Nephilim Are Real.

I’ve long been on record in my belief that the Moa is not actually extinct. I’m also willing to consider Steller’s Sea Ape and, categorisation permitting, Gef The Talking Mongoose.

My childhood pal used to swear he once saw a weird bipedal bird person lurking in his front yard. I was a huge paranormal nerd and hence super jealous.

I have noticed that "cryptid" gets applies pretty loosely nowadays, to include aliens (Flatwoods Monster, Hopkinsville Goblins) and supernatural beings (Jersey Devil) - I'd prefer it just mean elusive animals and extinction survivors. There doesn't seem to be much hope for Bigfoot or Nessie now, does there?

Duane Barry, Thursday, 14 May 2026 11:38 (three weeks ago)

Giant snakes are definitely out there, though

Bigfoot still has a very dedicated set of adherents. Nessie not so much.

Best theory abt Nessie - that it was mistakenly conjured up by Aleister Crowley while he was resident at Boleskine House on the shores of Loch Ness.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 14 May 2026 14:50 (three weeks ago)

I used to be fascinated by giant squids as a kid, but they're not really cryptids anymore, yeah? We have footage of them

I grew up in Bigfoot country and spent a lot of time in the remote woods but I don't believe in him, and the local native tribes described it as a woodland *spirit*, not a flesh & blood creature

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 14 May 2026 19:01 (three weeks ago)

"cephalopods vastly larger than either giant or colossal squids have been postulated at various times" <--

^thats great because it makes you think that if one day they actually discover a Nessie or chupacabra ppl will just be like “I reckon I saw a bigger one”

I remember seeing a photo of a 500 foot eucalyptus tree taken in Australia in the 19th century (the tallest CA redwoods are not even 400 feet) but there was nothing in the foreground to give context.. like a house or horse or anything! so you just had to believe, like Fox Mulder

I believe in the Insulindian Phasmid.

i probably posted abt this here before, tho likely long long ago

i was driving back my parents' car from my then-gf's parents' house in the early 80s, a ten-mile journey maybe, on the outskirts of shrewsbury. it was summer and well past midnight: country roads, small villages. at a particular ooint on the welshpool road, as i was preparing for the turn across to the old A5 which goes past the house i first lived in, i passed something walking along the verge by the road. something dark-coated and shiny, shiny so that it looked actually wet and dripping, tho it was a warm dry night. a large dog? a small pony? i turned to look at it as i passed and it looked like neither -- the face was long and horsish i guess, but droopy and alien in a way a horse's face isn't, plus it didnt seem to have hooves but pads of some kind.

and then i had to turn away bcz i was appoaching the turn and anyway the light was off it

i was tired sleepy and wanted to get home and my mind was more on driving than whatever this was, and i didnt really focus on how odd it was until some minutes later -- like my instant thought was “big wet dog” and only afterwards did my brain kick in to say "ok that wasn't a dog". i dont know if i knew the word “kelpie” at the time but definitely when i came across it later my mind went straight back to whatever this was. the river severn is maybe a mile away, though there is a small brook that runs thru the fields closer to the road (name not forgotten if ever known) and a couple of farm ponds and so. places you can get wet on a warm summer night if yr a the size of a small shambing pony…

the local native tribes described it as a woodland *spirit*, not a flesh & blood creature

in all seriousness this basically summarizes my take on these. people mistake apparitions for flesh-and-blood creatures. i believe in apparitions or spiritual presences.

i kinda believe the exact opposite!

Home Alone Again Or (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 19 May 2026 23:45 (two weeks ago)

one of david abram’s oft-repeated stories is a good example of what i mean. he was living with a Balinese shaman whose wife would leave tiny plates of fruit and rice at the periphery of their compound every day, and she explained (as though to an idiot) they were offerings to the “household spirits”. later on, he saw the rice grains being carried away by ants, and felt badly that his hosts had gone to all that trouble just for the ants to take their spirit offerings. eventually he figured out that the ants themselves were the “household spirits” in question, and the “offerings" were meant to satiate the ants so that they wouldn’t come in the houses looking for food.
