Computer Crash Sadness Stories

OK so I had a supremely shitty day at the day job & I came home & thought to myself "at least I get to write the Last Plane to Jakarta update tonight, maybe it'll be good & thereby rescue this otherwise unrescuable day" and so I picked a song from which to springboard (Tupac's "Hit 'Em Up," if you want to know) and I was really running well with it, doing the sort of stuff I like to do and then the iBook crashes.

This has never happened before.

Twenty minutes later and we can't get the hard drive to start no matter what we do. We are screwed. I keep skipping updates because of all the touring I've had to do lately, which makes me feel bad because the LPTJ weekly update is one of two constants in my life, the other being my wife, and I was really really happy with the shape this week's piece was taking and now it's gone.

Can someone please comfort me, perhaps with recent stories of computer crashes eating vital documents? I know that in the grand scale of things my problem is small but I am really stressed lately and this particular event is gnawing at me like Bukowski's "shoelace that breaks with no time left"

Aw, man. :-( And a Mac at that!

I've had it happen as well but with documents I'm shipping around from account to account -- sometimes it gets lost in the e-mail aether, doesn't even get bounced back to my home account. Very frustrating. So you are not alone, rest assured.

I started working as a law clerk this past spring, but for the first month or so there wasn't much for me to do, so I whiled away my time in the office writing 3 short stories which were starting to shape up pretty well. I haven't had much time to do any writing for myself in a while and was quite pleased. About a month ago I popped in the floppy to peruse my work and and the damn files wouldn't load--corrupted data or some such. AARRGGH. Now they won't even appear as files. And of course I deleted them all off the office computer to hide my tracks of getting paid to not work. Karma I guess, but man does it suck.

apparently your work is not lost. you can still recover it. my parents ibook - on which i am now typing - is completely fuxored because of the adsl modem installation. it keeps crashing.
