History Of The World In Pop

This is a thread in which we try to name as many years as possible which occur in the lyrics of pop songs - and according to said songs what is notable about such years. Using this inexact science we should be able to plot the past and future history of the world.

For instance: 1984: We should beware the sound mixture
and in 1963 Johnny came home with a gift for me.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I was surprised/
I was happy for a day in 1975/
I was puzzled by a dream/
It stayed with me all day in 1995

Tweeness will have its way.

In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find........

In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do, or say
Is in the pill you took today

In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you

In the year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides
Your legs got nothing to do
Some machine, doing that for you

In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube

In the year 7510
If God's a comin' he ought to make it by then
Maybe he'll look around himself and say
``Guess it's time for the Judgement day''

In the year 8510
God's gonna shake his mighty head
He'll either say ``I'm pleased where man has been''
Or tear it down and start again

In the year 9595
I'm kinda wondering if man's gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing...

(cheating a bit)

If you're not careful, you'll have nothing left and nothing to care for in the nineteen-seventies.

All the people I was kissing, some are here and some are missing, in the nineteen-nineties.

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

1989 the number, another summer

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

You say: "ere long done do does did "
words which could only be your own
you then produce the text
from whence was ripped

They've come for your uncool niece"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It’s 4 in the morning July in ’69, me and my sister, we crept down like shadows.

Lara, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

2000 zero zero party over, oops out of time

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I got my first real six-string

It was the summer of '69

k chu, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah you're pretty good looking for a girl

until the year 2525 now

Lets all meet up in the year 2000. Won't it be strange when we're all fully grown? Be there 2 o'clock by the fountain down the road

k chu, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Much as I hate to contribute this:

"It's the same old theme since 1918"

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Seems to me now
That the dreams we had before
Are all dead, nothing more
Than confetti on the floor
It's the end of a decade
In another ten years time
Who can say what we'll find
What lies waiting down the line
In the end of eighty-nine...

(historically useless except that it suggests 1979 was bad)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I got stuck in the 1860s
I've been here for 125 years

By the Aegian Sea in 334 BC,
He utterly beat the armies of Persia.

I think it was in ’83 my father left the family,
But came back three weeks later for a love both firm and stable.
I think it was in ’91 that Lee Remick died……
The sibling rivalry between my sister and me turned into the strongest branch of our family tree.

k chu, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I was blind in 1979, by '82 I had clues,
By 1986 I was mad as hell.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times – in 1959!

katie (katie), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Running to the station, my obligation
When I'm in effect, I shake the foundation
Stories I tell intellectually well
Fresh for '89 rocking bells

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

when some clown jumps up to get beat down
broken down to his very last compound

a lot of mc's like to use the word DRAMATICAL!
Fresh for '88, you suckas...

Simeon (Simeon), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I got some skeletons in my closet
And I dont know if no one knows it
So before they throw me inside my coffin and close it
I'm a expose it, I'll take you back to '73
Before I ever had a multi-platinum selling CD
I was a baby maybe I was just a couple of months
My faggot father must've had his panties up in a bunch

ann-margret (rosemary), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Did I dream that there was once a pro-EU Irish Eurovision entry once called '1992 (Barriers Come Down)'?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Well my body sank below the ground, it became as black as night.
overhead the sound of horses hooves, people fighting for their lives
Some joker in a headband was still getting chicks for free
And Big Brother was still watching you back in the days of '83

Well by 1985 I was as cold as cold can be,
But no-one was underground to dig me out and set me free.
87 socialism gave way to socialising,
So put your hands up in the air - once more the north is rising!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasting time at nowhere very special
Seems almost a part of it these days
I know every crack along the pavement
I remember what you said in '88

You said: 'It's time to leave this town
The world keeps turning 'round
The only thing that keeps me here is you'

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

1969 = annee erotique

I tried to speak / but when I spoke / all that came out was a croak

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Its 1997. What the fucks going on?

In 1649
To St George's Hill
A ragged band they called the Diggers
Came to show the people' s will
They defied the landlords
They defied the laws
They were the dispossessed
Reclaiming what was theirs

Then in 1915 my country said, "Son,
It's time you stop rambling, there's work to be done."
So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun
And they marched me away to the war.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG: wow - thanks to you, that stuff almost makes *sense* to me now.

d.z, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Curses, "Circa 1762" doesn't feature the title year in its lyrics. Uh... "we get to feeling like a fixture set in 1966", then.
