this is the only question that remains to be answered.

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

John & George = Everton
Paul = Liverpool
Ringo = Tranmere Rovers

Pete (Pete), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

where's the information from?

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete Best & Stu Sutcliffe = Accrington Stanley

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

What, the inforamtion has to be from somewhere. I'm sorry but I'm protecting my sources. (as MacDonald's has proven the right to do with their Big Mac Special Sauce).

Pete (Pete), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i think you're all trying to look clever. anyway, thw who; spurs or arsenal? human league, wednesday or united?

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The Who were more West London surely (i.e. QPR/Chelsea/Brentford)? Haven't a clue which though.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Steve Malkmus still support Luton or did he jettison that idea once the laughter dried up?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Daltrey was/is QPR I believe (Zemko to thread?)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i think pete's changed the question to "if the members of the beatles were a football club which ones would they be?"

ie. = john=everton - bitter (nearly typed "dead" haha)
george=everton - underdog
paul=liverpool - successful, 'big time'
ringo=tranmere - ocopusses garden

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

beatles = liverpool

i.e. hugely overrated

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Humang League are deffo United.
(Heaven 17 Wednesday hence the split).

Pete (Pete), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

;)

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Mick Jones is QPR obviously - what about Gavin Rossdale?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Steve Malkmus still support Luton or did he jettison that idea once the laughter dried up?

AHAHAHAHAHAH! funniest thing i've read in a while.

what about "this heat"? did they go for charlton? maybe crystal palace?

what about the wedding present (that is if the george best album was intended to be humourous and not reverent)?

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Peter Buck is REM.

the pinefox, Friday, 13 December 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well the Wedding Present are from Leeds, so Gedge & co would've plenty of stick if they supported Man United. I think George Best is one of the few Utd players whose appeal tends to cross football boundaries. (Oasis album covers being another case in point.)

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I can reveal exclusively here, (and wait for this cos it's a shocka....)

Top Indie Veterans, mates of Mark E Smith and Peel faves I LUDOCROUS (I told you this was BIG!) support......

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

... Crystal Palace!! (Huge gasp from ILE on-lookers)

MES suppts Man City of course.

I can't spell - *I Ludicrous* I meant.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"He was born in Liverpool, he was raised in Liverpool, he went to school in Liverpool, he works in Liverpool, and his favorite team is of course Everton."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

... Crystal Palace!! (Huge gasp from ILE on-lookers)

Along with David Bowie, Bill Wyman and half the comedians in London apparently. (Sean Hughes, Jo Brand, Mark Thomas and Roger de Courcey!)

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Just gimme some truth

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

nasty by name...

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure Liam Gallagher will love being listed as United on that site.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean Hughes' bathroom is a Palace shrine, team photos and everything all over the walls, and was converted from a small bedroom to fit all of that tat. He is a follower of Bill Hicks' rule about adverts but said he would *consider* doing an advert because THEN he could buy a place on the board (that is all I have to say on the subject of this man, oh yes indeedy).

Liverpool-supporting players include Ian McCulloch/other Bunnymen...

Best story I have heard recently is that Patsy Kensit's revenge on LG is to make bloody sure their kid supports United.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Mark E Smith is the only decent Manc singer/musician who supports city.

Smiths, Mondays, Roses, Charlatans, New Order and loads more I can't remember at the moment are red.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Mark E Smith is the only decent Manc singer/musician who supports city.

Besides Oasis (yes, I realize you're not counting them ;-)), Mark Burgess of the Chameleons is a City fanatic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

But Ned, you're American, how do you know these things? (No offence, mate, but an in-depth understanding of the tribal loyalties of English football isn't usually an American trait.)

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

There are always exceptions. ;-) I found about Mark B's allegiance when in a solo concert someone in the audience mentioned his City love and he ruefully responded along the lines, "Supporting City isn't a birthright, it's a curse!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Palarse supporting comedians - add Kevin Day and Mark Steel to the list. Preponderence of Palace comics is a v. weird and under-reported phenomenon within the UK Comedy scene.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew there were more Dave, I just couldn't remember the rest.

At least they're genuine comedians, unlike the "what a great sense of humour, aren't we wacky" clowns you see down at Maine Road.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

not sure about daltrey actually. phil collins once said he suppoorted the Rs but later claimed to be a spurs man.

other QPR slebs: mick jones, robert smith, glen matlock, michael nyman, bill bailey

pH34r the FA cup song!!

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

-Pale Saints - such enthusiastic Leeds fans, they insisted on a clause in their 4AD contract for ads in matchday programme.

-The Lillies one-off Cocteau Twins/Lush dodgy pro-Spurs supergroup
released "And David Seaman Will Be Very Disappointed About That..."

-Inspiral Carpets - Oldham

-Sultans of Ping - Nottingham Forest bloody awful Irish group did a track for a Forest fanzine iirc (Roy Keane connection?)

-Iron Maiden, first singer was kicked out for being West Ham hooligan....or something.

-Leatherface - Sunderland. Crap band, crap club.

stevo (stevo), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Why are you assuming that they supported any team?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 14 December 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

is it true that shaun imrei (elevation/terrorize/sonia(!)) did a leeds utd record

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 14 December 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Smiths, Mondays, Roses, Charlatans, New Order and loads more I can't remember at the moment are red."

I'm pretty certain Johnny Marr is a Blue. Rob Gretton was too. Charlatans aren't actually Mancs so I dare say they do support Satan's little helpers.

Tag, Monday, 16 December 2002 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"Charlatans aren't actually Mancs"

Yes I know that, but seeing as the only city fan in the office here is from Kent I thought I'd let it pass.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 16 December 2002 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

James Dean Bradfield supports Forest, Nicky Wire was a Spurs fan, Sean Moore supports Liverpool. Ed Radiohead supports Man U, Coldplay (bleurgh) are Southampton fans, Rick Wakeman supports Brentford, Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour are both Arsenal fans, Geezer Butler supports the Villa, Half Man Half Biscuit were Tranmere fans, and I think Def Leppard were all Sheffield United fans bar Rick Savage, who loved the Owls.

Damian (Damian), Monday, 16 December 2002 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Badly Drawn Damon is a City fan. I thought Rick Wakeman was too - he did the half time draw at at least one game at Maine Road last season.

Tag, Monday, 16 December 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Damon Albarn is a Chelsea fan, and Bowie a Crystal Palace fan? Well I never. 3D from Massive Attack supports Bristol City. Sarah Cracknell supports Brentford too.

Damian (Damian), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

far from making sport/fitba seem interesting, this thread makes all music/ians sound like arse.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"I thought Rick Wakeman was too - he did the half time draw at at least one game at Maine Road last season."

What part of Manchester is Wakeman from then?

Not that I've got a problem with people not supporting their local team (geographically I should have been Stockport County rather than United), but the self-righteousness of city fans about their oh-so-local support occasionally grates. As I was just saying to my city-supporting friends and colleagues from Kent, Hampshire and London. And don't get me started on the 'scousers'.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

and i always thought you were a bluenose.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Easy mistake to make, michael.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not sure whether to apologise or not.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, cos I knew you were joking I've forgiven you anyway.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Back to the original question - I thought Lennon was a Red, as indicated by Ian Hart's wistful exchange with Sheryl Lee in Backbeat - something about a once-great team languishing in the Second Division (as they were in Shankly's early days).

Blues claim Macca as one of their own, though I'm not sure of any hard evidence. George and Ringo always seemed like Reds to me.

Support for the two clubs was, at one time, very sectarian - yet, I've been told, with some authority, that Everton were the Catholic team, Liverpool the Protestant *and* vice versa on a number of occasions. So it's a bit more complicated than that. A proliferation of Everton/Celtic *and* Liverpool/Celtic hats in the 80s doesn't clear this one up. My Mum's family was Catholic and my Dad's CofE, but they were both Blue. Cilla Black claimed (in one of the weekend's Sunday supplements) then Everton = Labour and Liverpool = Conservative too.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 16 December 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard similar tales of sectarianism and Liverpool/Everton with no one exactly sure which side was which. Probably just as well. An elderly Scouser once told me pre-WW2 he, and thousands others, would watch whichever side playing at home that Saturday. That said he was also Schizophrenic and fervently believed it was the in fact the RAF that had regularly bombed Liverpool during the Blitz!

stevo (stevo), Monday, 16 December 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Wouldn't have been the first time Churchill had mobilised the armed forces against Merseysiders (1911 rail strike). Quite an appealing little conspiracy theory. Bollocks all the same.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 16 December 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

nine years pass...

This was discussed last night.

Macca has reluctantly joined a Uruguayan LFC supporters' club or something.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 10:49 (fourteen years ago)

I have a Beatles interview CD where someone asked what team they supported, John replied "we're not interested in football" and the others audibly agreed.

Mark G, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 11:00 (fourteen years ago)

In one of the Hunter Davies books (maybe his recentish autobiography) he says that one of his great disappointments was the Beatles' complete lack of interest in football. I think he mentions that John suggested a footballer for the Sgt Pepper cover simply because the name amused him.

Bob Six, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 12:12 (fourteen years ago)

(Albert Stubbins)

Bob Six, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 12:14 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

ILE is becoming ILM for a bit, today.

Mark G, Friday, 11 October 2013 16:28 (twelve years ago)

He's on the cover, isn't he?

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Friday, 11 October 2013 16:54 (twelve years ago)

L'pool were shit when the Beatles were growing up, don't know about Everton

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Friday, 11 October 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)
