WHy do people think having "Beverly Hills" in the title makes something funny?

Beverley Hills Cop (1,2 & 3)
Troop Beverley Hills
Beverley Hills Ninja
Down and Out In Beverley Hills
The Beverley Hillbillies.

(Beverley Hills 90210 as a vaguely honourable mention).

Why so many, and why are most of them comedies whose supposed humour appears to spring solely out of them being set in Beverley Hills.

It's normally the things that they do in Beverley Hills that makes them, um, "funny". It's traditionally not the kind of stuff you'd expect in Beverley Hills. Yer Beverley Hillbillies is yer prime example there - hicks living in a posh part of town.

So, um, yeah, Juxtaposition. Ahem.

Because it's a cheap and easy way to set up another stupid "fish out of water" comedy.

replace "beverly" with "muswell" and the humour compounds exponentially... think of the posibilities. don't stop with the muswell hillbillies... muswell hill cop! down and out in muswell hill! muswell hill, N90210...

The sequel to Beverly Hills Cop was origianlly going to be Muswell Hill Cop except:
a) Eddie Murphy wouldn't come to England to make it
b) No-one knew where Muswell Hill was
c) Dempsey and Makepeace proved that the US cop in London thing just isn't funny

"...in space" is funnier.

Because rich people are wacky and eccentric!

There's a Beverly Hills, Michigan. It's not quite the same though.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Because Beverley Hills is gauche and tacky and Beverley sounds like the name of someone gauche and tacky. And there's no tragedy associated with it. Like "Auschwitz Cop," now would that work?
