I've only been and gone and bought a hamster

It's what my niece wants more than anything in the world for Christmas, so good old Auntie C J has been to the pet shop today and bought an enormous palace of a cage, plus all the bedding, food, water bottle, exercise wheel etc etc and the cutest, sweetest little hamster.

I shan't be seeing my niece to deliver this present until Boxing Day. Since it will be residing with me for the next 10 days, I feel I ought to give it a name, despite the fact this may be temporary as niece may wish to name it after a Tweenie or something.

Hamster is female, and a cream/beige colour. What shall I name her??

C J (C J), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Cupcake.

Hamsters are so cute!!! I wish we had them here.

toraneko (toraneko), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Twunt. I wanted to get a house rabbit and call it Twunt, maybe one day I shall, in the meantime I lend you the name temporarily

smee (smee), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

My hamster was called Thurston.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, hamsters. I had a few in my callow youth, they are fuzzy. I named mine Tory after an aunt, and somehow that seems right for them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve!

or

Smuggles

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

If Ned's going to suggest Tory, I'm suggesting Whig or Reform.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Astounding! (The Tory is short for Victoria.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

(Well, Whig is short for Whigfield and Reform is short for "Reform feet and legs! Reform arms and torso! And I'll reform the head!")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

It must be named Bryson! That or Mr. Higgins.

marianna, Monday, 16 December 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Call it 'The Tits'

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It is becoming increasingly apparent that I am not going to be able to part with her. She is lovely! She is sitting here by the keyboard, nibbling a little piece of tomato. Aren't hamsters supposed to sleep all day or something?

Hamtaro!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

They can jump fucking high. Do NOT underestimate her. They spend their whole lives trying to escape whatever environment they find themselves in, until finally, the end.

Mine once went to live behind the washing machine for 5 or 6 weeks.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no ideas for good hamster names, I'm afraid, but I wanted to mention that I really like that "I've only been and gone and..." phrasing, except I think it is obligatory to then end the sentence with "haven't I?".

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Bilbo is a good name for a hamster.

Johnny Alpha.

This reminds me of a story Tom once told about an AI - advertised on the web as the future of AI for your company. You'd set up this web robot to answer any and all questions about what your company did or was. As an example they set up a beast called Hammy The Hamster Expert. This could answer any question about hamsters, hamster care, feeding etc. Tom proceeded to ask it how many legs a hamster possessed. It did not know. This AI robot disappeared very fast.

Al_Ewing, Monday, 16 December 2002 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

call it: "and I am the knob."

dwh (dwh), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish we had them here.

Where do you live where hamsters are unavailable?

(And I bet you he's spinning the new trance remix of the Hamsterdance.)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow. That's either the world's biggest hamster or the world's smallest set of DJ gear I've ever seen! Color me impressed.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 03:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a hamster when I was young. I called it Rainbow, which is quite possibly the gayest thing I've ever done in my life, apart from wearing that lavender-colored batik shirt with the unicorn.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

which is quite possibly the gayest thing I've ever done in my life

Except sex with boys, I'd have to assume.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Gay as in giddily happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

That DJ picture is of a gerbil, not a hamster.

Pedantic Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Inspired by the "101 Ways to Kill a Hobbit" thread....

Call it Hairy Crackling

smee (smee), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Australia. We do not have hamsters or gerbils (or dormouses or spiny zebra mouses et cetera). We do have guinea pigs, normal mice, rats, ferrets and a plethora of small, furry marsupials.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

spiny zebra mouses sound very scary indeed!

C J (C J), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

If you blow in the hamsters ears it will die of a heart attack, don't try it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I was a hamster when I was young.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

My family had a pet rat named Malty b/c it was creme and beige.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

My father has a hamster, he named it Useless.
