Do you get one?

Whatcha spendin' it on?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

we get a gift certificate to the jelly of the month club. We get nothing, not even a company holiday card.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

One of my roomies last year got an iPod for his Xmas bonus (along with two bottles of scotch and an additional two weeks of paid vacation). Moral: Become a post-production video editor.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

In fact we have never even gotten a thank you from anyone remotely high up.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

The company I work for tries to fool us into thinking we're getting a bonus by paying us one week earlier than usual.

This makes every January *hellish*.

Lara, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

4517734

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Soda farl.

Lara, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's ever gotten an apparently huge bonus in a worthless foreign currency?

Lara, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

And the euro DOES NOT count.

Lara, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm public sector, so I don't get one. But then I'm not going back to work til the 6th of Jan.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing, but a backdated payrise showed up in my last paypacket so I have a little more in the account than usual.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never had a job.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I received thirty English pounds, which were promptly swallowed by my overdraft.

Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

At One Job I get paid for 4 hours Xmas day. Well Woop-de-do! AT my other job we had a Xmas party at a chic country club. Quite a spread of grub, but we had to pay for drinks. A New Castle was $6!!

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I get one. Last year it was almost the equivalent of one paycheck, which isn't bad at all. Tonight is the department party, and Friday is the company party, which will be lavish.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Er, this holiday season I am receiving a big ton of money for housing, a decent amount for food, and about a 5% raise just for doing my job - so come the 1st of Jan. I will all of a sudden start getting paid approximately twice as much as I am now. Which is good because my pay right now is shit.

That, I think, is probably the only policy of Dubya's that I agree with.

Tom Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got less than last year but they "made up the difference" with a massive gift certificate for me to buy "more appropriate" clothing. I am Eliza Doolittle, what do I win? I'm waiting for the voice lessons...whatever, I still have $14k in my pocket plus the huge gift certificate.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

your xmas bonus wz 14 grand?! god damn!!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but what do you think about the gift certificate?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Bonus? What bonus?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Woohoo! I got an extra month's pay! But I have to work on Dec. 24 and 25. Grrr... Well, I get 10 days off after that. All Kurisumasu means to the Japanese is that big shopping brouhaha with pretty lights during the winter.

I still prefer this fat bonus over lame-ass Xmas parties thrown by the employer.

Melinda Mess-injure, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 06:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm treating myself to a rubber biscuit & wish sandwich with my bonus. Mmm mmm good.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never had a Christmas bonus. And I should be getting some kind of recognition for doing my boss's job for the last 3 months, but no, you have to do a job for at least 6 months before getting paid accordingly. Grr. I got a £1000 bonus on completion of a fixed term contract once though, which was quite nice.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

None this year, but I'm not complaining cos the financial hole the company's in is due to the gamble of sudden expansion (landing a big contract, buying an extra floor of our building) which allowed them to hire me in the first place.

It's just a bonus having a job, Brian.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Way to go ally. That's about 6 months tuition isn't it.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

14K = blimey, well done. We get no Christmas bonus here, despite the fact that I've now worked 100+ hours since last Monday to meet a deadline that appears to have been artificially fixed to make the company's books look marginally better this quarter. I am not happy anout this, not happy at all.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

That sucks Ricky! :(

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 10:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Nuttin', but my base salary's ridiculous anyway, and law firms that have given bonuses in the last two years have also been laying folks off.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw something in the paper this morning where Tesco have given their staff a Christmas bonus of £1. That's far more offensive than not giving a bonus, I'd have thought.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

$14k, I'm so jealous. Like I said a big fat zero, been like this for 5 years. When I worked for the porno phone company we got a bonus (cue Dan). Equivalent to one weeks pay. Yep, i worked in the industry for a year.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I was watching "Cathouse" on HBO with my wife and both of us boggled when we learned that the women were making upwards of $250K/year at that particular bordello. Then we came back to our senses, but STILL...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I made $30 an hour working for the porn company. No I wasn't a performer by any means. I was a phone moderator/collector. It was possibly the worst and most humorous job I ever had.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I get my bonus in March. It gets paid 3 days before my birthday which is rather convenient.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris V to stories thread!!!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

$14k is more than half of what I make a year so I'm totally totally jealous. Did you really mean that, Ally?

I'm supposed to get a bonus this year (first year at this new job) but it might not be 'til January and I have no idea how much (I only work for one person).

I thought I was in heaven 2 years ago when I got a big bar of chocolate and a gift certificate to the olive garden.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

i got one, half a week's pay, but it was nice because i'm on contract and was totally not expecting it. i will spend it on CLOTHES and buy something nice for my grandma.

ally, 14K is amazing, i wish i got bonuses like that!

sand.y, Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Freelancers don't get Xmas bonuses. Except that the Chicago Reader pays people who've done a substantial amount of writing for them a "retainer" of about 10% of what we've already gotten paid for the year (though it usually comes well into the new year). Another reason to love the Reader.

Really, this is the time of year when I start comparing what I made this year to what, say, everybody else in my college class made, and proceed to hate myself.

Douglas, Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a pay cut last year around xmas, so getting nothing this year is a marginal improvement. Or at least that's what I tell myself to stop from hurling myself down the stairs.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I got four grand two years ago, but I hated my job. Now I like my job and they gave me yesterday afternoon off to go Christmas shopping. And I get 31 days annual leave plus bank holidays and I always go home at 5pm. This means much more to me than money.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 19 December 2002 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

About Tesco bonuses: if they're anything like S*inbur*'s, staff get a fixed amount depending on how many hours they're contracted for. I am contracted for 16, and I get 60 quid, and so on. I'm going to spend it on crack. There's no difference between Tesco's and S****bury's anyway. They're all cockfarmers.

alix (alix), Thursday, 19 December 2002 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Madchen, That sounds lovely! So jealous! I did get to leave two hours early yesterday to do more shopping though. :)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a check for more than one paycheck's worth of money. Actually it's a weird amount. I think it must be like 5% of my salary or something. Anyways it's pretty cool. I bought a Playstation 2, and I'm going to save some, I paid a big bill that's been sitting around for a while, and I need new tires.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Got a wee bonus, but it's all but spent already.

All money I ever make is already spent.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 19 December 2002 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

That Chicago Reader deal sounds sweet, Douglas.

I got a £15 company token which meant I cld buy, after staff discount, a 4CD Groundhogs Box Set I'd had my eye on for some time.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 19 December 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

They could have just given all the staff Groundhogs box sets as bonuses!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I once got three bottles of wine in fancy box. I felt quite grown up.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally where do you work? That's amazing.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahahaha. I won't even get paid for Christmas day and Boxing Day.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 19 December 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Hrm. I have one of the small bonuses, actually. I mean within my company. My boss gets like $100k+. I mean of course he is the CFO which I guess means you get things like that but still, it's crazy. True story: I threw a Christmas party at my house one year, and one of my coworkers showed. He'd just received his bonus and went on a rant about how crap it was, and how he deserved so much more, and got all my friends agreeing with him. So he leaves, and someone asks, "Wait, do you know what his bonus was?" I replied "About $30k". They stared at me like I just started speaking in tongues. Finally someone said, "And he's complaining?"

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 December 2002 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

This is weird, I just left the library for a second, and then when I came back, there was an envelope with my name on it and a £10 note was in it, with no note of who it was from or anything. My colleague has also been left an envelope. I hope it's not a redundancy pay-off.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, hold on! I think it must be money for our staff christmas lunch that we didn't go to, but you'd think they'd leave some kind of note, wouldn't you?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

so far I've had 3 paid for booze-ups and loads of betty C and pastry vouchers. I've only been here a month, I can't complain.

chris (chris), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

my colleague also got a christmas card, and she's not around, so I opened it, and it was completely blank! This is freaking me out!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I have gotten crazy stupid five-figure bonuses before.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

My Grandmother still gives me money for Christmas! I'm 24! I'm going to spend it on gifts. How nice of me.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 20 December 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't fathom anyone at my old job at PBS getting a five-figure bonus, unless it was in rubles or Argentinian pesos or Weimar-era marks or something

geeta (geeta), Friday, 20 December 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I want my next / first Christmas bonus to be in Pazoozas.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 December 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I want my next / first Christmas bonus to be in Pazoozas.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 December 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

YES, PAZOOZAS!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 December 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

This year we got a hamper with choc's, cake, biscuits and wine. It's the first time in my 18 years with the organization that we've got something for Christmas. We do get a bonus in the summer if we reach our targets though.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 20 December 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck the boss, get a big bonus, that's how it works apparently. "Appropriate" = "not g-string"?

sunny biter, Friday, 20 December 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Just got mine. $150 after taxes. Whee.

Aaron W, Friday, 20 December 2002 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Got mine today! $500 in cash (and a xmas present of $100 at a day spa)! Happy happy... Now WHAT shall I spend it on... hmmm....

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 20 December 2002 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I just found out what mine will be, and my guess upthread was correct.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking yr boss definitely doesn't do much for you, unless your boss has some say over salaries which none of mine do. Bastard assholes.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine was supposed to be easily over $10G but I was only here for 1/4 of the finicial and we didn't hit our unit's targets (not a surprise seeing as how the World Trade Center attack destroyed our market) so Im jsut glad I got over $100.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

We never hit our targets and that is including a deal with my brother to split my signing bonus (which he gets as "refferer").

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I wuldn't fuck my boss without at least a £10,000 bonus in it!

(Obviously I am not seriously suggesting Ally did any such thing! I like Ally!)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I DID do such a thing but he's not really my boss, he's more of a higher up coworker, who has no say about salaries, and it happened AFTER our reviews/bonuses were set, and it wasn't done for any reason like that. I'm just feeding the person who didn't even have the balls to call me on it in a non-anoneemouse stylee, don't mind me.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew the two separate facts, Ally - I was just clarifying that I was not implying a connection, after suggesting that there would have to be, for me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

haha I am discussing this under my own, fully-googlable real name! Hurrah!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, I know. I'm just pissed off at the spineless fuck who said that. I busted my ass, spent my health, lost a (admittedly very unhealthy) relationship, and basically gave up a massive portion of my life for this job, as detailed several times prior (the best one being the "no lunch breaks allowed" episode), I deserved to get more - this is less than my last two bonuses. It has nothing to do with my attractions elsewhere, and I don't appreciate it being implied otherwise. I'm one of the key people in this office, which was very clearly laid out to me during my review, which the person I had an incident with at the Xmas party didn't even get to be part of, and they aren't willing to let me go.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 December 2002 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If there's an arsehole comment to be made, and you hang out on a public website, someone will make it, sooner or later. I kind of think that one was close to inevitable, nasty as it is.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 December 2002 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

seven years pass...

All year I have been told about the generous bonuses offered by my present employer. I was told to expect at least 4 figures. Bonus came in today. I am going to pay my cell phone bill and order a chicken tikka masala. and then it will be all gone. :-(

not only was it really small, but for some reason, it was taxed at around 45%. i need to look into that. because i want samosas too.

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Monday, 21 December 2009 21:31 (sixteen years ago)
