I have been in the library since 11am with one break for a cup of tea and my essay is due at 2pm tomorrow and it is some 2250 words short of the word count and I just have a load of notes and confusion and can someone who is working from home take a moment to scream, on my behalf as I cannot do that in a library without appearing mental(Then can someone summarize the main characteristics of middle english pronunciation and grammar for me?)I am not sure what kind of answers I am expecting to this. Possibly none. My brain has died.

I have slumped onto the desk on your behalf.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

This is what happens when I slump onto the desk: 7 3tcferuiosvfhsdulp e.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I sugest you type away in a funny font. Just for a change. How about writing your essay in Wingdings?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I'm doing that while you keep typing.

I have found you a list of Chaucer's words! It may not help, but to everich their own.

Everything in middle english was actually pronounced "fish", hence much confusion about the translation of the bible about those guys being Fisher of Men. the translation when read aloud sounded much like "fish fish fish fish, fish fish, fish fish fish fish fish". this was compunded by the consonental shift that led to the translation referring to Jeremy Fisher from Wind in the Willows.

This is all true. (How many words is that?)

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm up to 500 words. I'm so shying away from the next bit though which is the changes in bvoth vowel quantity and vowel quality. Thankfully the consonants remained stable during ME. Alan, are you sure that's true? Oh god when i get out of here I think I will need a drink. Oh god solitary drinking at home then. Oh GOd.(YES, i am starting to panic. AGRHGRGRGHRHGRGHRGHRRGHRGHRGHRGGRHRGRHGRHGRHRGHRGH)And what next after vowels? syntax!!!I am dying.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Take no notice of Alan. Jeremy Fisher is from Beatrix Potters Tales, not Wind in the Willows. That is obviously Toad of Toad Hall.
You crazy Fool!

Simeon (Simeon), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed. Also is it so wrong to increase one's word count by writing 'Old English' and 'Middle English' and not OE and ME?

alix (alix), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Toad of Toad Hall was in Tales of the Riverbank. see those biblical translations were tricky fellers.

I have found you a list of Chaucer's words! It may not help, but to everich their own.

I just finished writing up the minutes for an FDA subcommittee meeting. Perhaps I should have used some of those words to liven up the text. (Of course, Chaucer didn't know about potatoes, never mind acrylamide.)

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I get away with writing 'As time accrued'? I'm sick of saying things like ' as the period progressed'.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Three words is less than four words, you'll undo all your good work.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeh, but maybe the lecturer will appreciate the tongue in cheek ness to it. MAYBE. Word count is now 1010 and i am tackling syntactic changes. Well, less like tackling, more like hitting it with a marshmallow hammer.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

time passed?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I considered 'as time went by'. I also consdiered earlier to write 'Phonetic changes had a knock on effect on grammar'. I can't even type properly anymore. I've been here almost 8 hours. I tihnk ill go home and eat takeaway adm cp,e back tromorow,. /I'm going to leave that in. SEE I AM SUFFERING FROM MENTALISM>

alix (alix), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I get away with writing 'As time accrued'?

Not in any circumstances, no. It's just nasty.

Didn't I read somewhere that the closest modern analogue to the kind of pronunciation that you'd hear a handful of centuries back in England is in the southern states of the US, like Mississippi or something? I like to imagine Shakespeare as performed by Blanche Dubois and fat southern sheriffs. (Is there any truth in this at all Lixi, or is it just nonsense?)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's some truth, yes, as English went to America around the late middle english, early modern period, but obv, all languages change and American English will have diversified somewhat. It does retain some old features though, but then so do southern dialects in England, I think. I'm not too well read on this though, so don't take me completely for my word.

alix (alix), Thursday, 19 December 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Word count = 2044. Minutes left before submission = 118. brain cells left = 0.7. chances of nervous collapse = 100%

alix (alix), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Lixi love. This suXors. I hope you get it done. How many more words to go? And can they all be 'waaaah'? And are you coming out tonight?

"Three words is less than four words."

FEWER. Sorry, Graham, am pedant.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It's out of 2500, but i am rapidly running out of things to say. still, havent concluded yet, or written waffling introduction. where is you going out to tonight?

alix (alix), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, do another 2oo words or so, it'll be fine. Actually, you can easily fill up yr total with intro/outro. Get cracking!

Tonight - Buffalo Bars for How Does It Feel...: Stuart M & Tracy-Ann guest DJing. Going ice-skating before if you're recovered from essay trauma by then.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Quick quick, do conclusion! Introduction is good, and where you use all the phrases that seem too cheesey for the main essay.

(ice skating...)

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I just replaced my typo of 'meaing' with 'mewing' instead of 'meaning'. Ah, spellchecker, I love you. the sentence read 'English is an isolating language, meaning that components can be separated with no loss of mewing'

alix (alix), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Lordy, I wish I could separate components with no loss of mewing. It'd be a real bonus.

But yes, come out later, Starry, and Lixi too. Ph34r the ice-sk8r boi maseev!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

alix (alix), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Edit! Edit like the wind!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Also make sure to allow a good 10 minutes for printing disasters unless yr college is supercool.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah Ronan there's shedloads to write about that, keeping it to 1500 words will be the issue!

WELL DONE on finishing essay! I second the suggestion of GIN.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)
