Michael if Tom Middleton starts playing bootlegs go up to the box and smack him one for me, and then tell him how I persuaded my friend to go to see him with me instead of Etienne De Crecy and Alex Gopher with me the next week. And I regret this decision massively.

i've seen him a couple of times this yr already and he's been on a straight up house vibe both times. the only bootleg he's played is that "remember the love" (or something) cut-up of house classics (pacific state/chime/you got the love/etc) that he did himself. friday he's supporting royksopp so he may be a bit more, er, playful. was he shit, then?

Yeah he started off a 4 hour set with really chilled deep house which is fine for the start and it was building away nicely, I was enjoying myself. Then he played a bootleg of pink and something, then nirvana and destinys child, then he cut the fuck out of good life and never let it roll, then he played a bootleg of inxs and the beastie boys which was good but didn't really suit the night. After this half hour he'd totally lost my interest, it was all on the cd player, not mixed properly at all, and then just as I'd kinda sat down for a while and was thinking this is crap (even as fucked as I was) I heard that lovely "bu beep beep beep" of Take Me With You and like everyone I know ran onto the dancefloor and we were all going mad and grinning etc

Except the prick played some kind of power rock bootleg of it which never did any of the best parts, in fact it just continued the bleepy part throughout with guitars behind it. Yeah thanks Tom. Grrrrrrrr.

It's odd, I'd been dying to see him and the next week's bill of Etienne and Alex was like "oh well I'll go along", but they were everything I thought he'd be and then some. It's a funny old game. I'm sure he's a good DJ but I was disappointed and I rarely am. I have a feeling when DJs come to Tivoli in Dublin they see the wicked CD deck all hooked up and think "at last I can play all these crap tunes I have on cd". Mix them? Er....but how? This resulted in jokers like Emerson getting hammered and using the sampler to make I Feel Love not get to the chorus for 20 minutes or Blue Monday delay for 10 minutes on the rapidfire drum intro while my friend screamed play the song you prick.

As annoyed as those first two paragraphs may seem, they don't really get across my feelings, I was really really annoyed, you are a dj, you have a massive hit, you play it, those are the rules, he's not Radiohead.

ronan, you are OTM. that wd have been infuriating. i taped his essential mix and he did the same thing; started off w/ this ace driving house track and then cut to the bootlegs - that "dreadlock holiday", some d'n'b mix of "get ur freak on", a bit of ragga - all ok in the right context but totally derailing the momentum. you could actually hear the crowd *talking* in the background.

Yeah and the Cosmos thing was unforgivable, my friend who was meant to be support DJ was sick that night but if he was there I'm sure as promoter aswell as fan he would have been horrified, the bloody gig was advertised as Cosmos-4 Hour Set. My friend had only ever heard Take Me With You, he doesn't even know much about dance music, he was wrecked and still said there was no flow at all to the set.

even though I was very young i still remember late 80s r and b. I would go to camp over the summer when I was like 8 or 9 and the kitchen staff would be chillin' outside with the boombox. "buffalo stance" is still one of my faves. my friend omar lent me his new edition cd in high school and i would play "cool it now" twice in a row, right in between stan getz and velocity girl.
can i just add that i miss flat-tops and if i was black i would start growing one now.

This makes no sense, Aaron. Are you name-dropping? Or did you just forget to add the words "on my radio show" after "cool it now"? Because, in the context of a radio show, playing "cool it now" twice in a row between Stan Getz and Velocity Girl is much more interesting. If you were only talking about what you did on your stereo in you room, I would be quite bored!
