Charlie Rose: C/D

I like the breadth of guests he has on and his general intelligence, but it seems that unless the guest is somehow enmeshed with politics, his questions are not that compelling.

New "Salma Hayek didn't wear a bra for Charlie" answers.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 19 December 2002 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate how he'll have some interesting guest and then spend the entire show talking about himself. My grandma used to watch him though, so he gets some points.

Aaron W, Thursday, 19 December 2002 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud beyond horrible dud!!!! A more obsequious sychophant you'll never see!! I mean do his eyes well up at EVERYTHING? "You were accused of drowning your own children" eyes well up; bashful shy smile - "what was that.... LIKE?"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
I think he's pretty great, actually. Sometimes when he interviews entertainers it gets a little too Inside the Actor's Studio, but on most occasions I end up learning something that I wouldn't have known through most talk shows or puff pieces. He had a particularly good panel discussion a couple of years ago on the state of independent film, with people like Robert Redford and Christine Vachon.

Also: my brother used to say that Rose looks like he's either working on two hours of sleep or else he's just been punched in the face. For that alone: Classic.

i used to get high and watch him all the time

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i envy your former lifestyle, s1ocky.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I also like the way, when a guest says something funny or true, Rose says "yes" and chuckles.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

He's clearly a tremendous alcoholic is what it is. He's got that rumpled flask-man look.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

He can be exruciating. He IS a horrible horrible star-fucker a la James Lipton. I watch it anyway though, cuz the guests can be good and even charlie can be good despite himself. But really, he will laugh at the dorkiest young actor's jokes like he is a Today Show host or something and it can make you wince.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

having said that though, it is one of the only places on American television where you can see an ACTUAL ARTIST talk about their work. So for that I'm grateful. Tonight they are playing an old interview he did with Cartier-Bresson and it is very nice to see.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, good guests, and because he doesn't have commercials he actually has time for more than the bam-bam-bam Crossfire approach. He actually seems interested in ideas. But he does also seem like a completely self-involved ass. I'd like his show a lot better if he wasn't on it.

spittle (spittle), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

is there something in between classic and dud? Like..Average to Good?

Richard K (Richard K), Friday, 6 August 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm telling you people, smoke some reefer and watch it, charlie will expand your mind

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

his hour-long interview of Ted Turner the other night was pretty classic.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched Letterman stoned once and the raw visibility of his insatiable need for attention freaked me out so much I couldn't watch him for a year. I'd be interested to see how Charlie Rose would seem.

spittle (spittle), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

he's doing a new science series. the first episode, which you can see here, was done in collaboration with Eric Kandel. not in-depth or anything, but a lot of fun to watch.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 3 November 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

especially the second panel on there

Hey wow so Charlie Rose has a SHINER

Apparently he just tripped and knocked his head on something, but the result is still that the show opens and he's sitting there like he just got out of a bar fight, and it makes the interviews way more intense, like he just might lean over the table and sock you if you're trying to evade a question.

I almost feel bad posting about it, because it's way more fun if you just turn on your TV and go "holy crap WTF happened to Charlie Rose"

nabisco, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

that's exactly what i did about 20 minutes ago. it's not a bad look for him. the squint in the left eye gives him a sort of "don't kid a kidder, kid" vibe.

"Our guests tonight ... will not even THINK about fucking with me."

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

The story that sounds the most plausible is that he was punched, then fell on his face...

charlie rose kind of reminds me of ted baxter from the mary tyler moore show -- he plays a smart person on TV, sort of, but it's pretty obvious he's a dolt.

New in @nymag: I obtained phone logs that show Jeffrey Epstein called Charlie Rose dozens of times, including to recommend potential assistants. I spoke to one who said she was sexually harassed by Rose. She told me, “I was being offered up for abuse.” https://t.co/rIf4Nxopq6 pic.twitter.com/UqAqstA5Gs
