You mean, her landlord actually pays attention to a little thing like the law? An honest one, and a rarity, yo!

i bought a space heater from target because i am afraid of my apartment's ancient radiator that has to have its pilot lit with a match. new heater has been in my home one day and has already blown out two surge protectors.
help?
― get bent, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)
perhaps your surge protectors... suck?
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)
wow, hostile
― get bent, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)
space heaters are probably more dangerous than your radiator...
― max, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)
new space heaters aren't really dangerous. they do use a ton of power though...
sorry that was unhelpful.
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)
yeah they're mostly dangerous if you fall asleep with them on. (i don't.)

i have a heater similar to this one: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31LfqYJVsBL._SL500_AA280_.jpgand i was wondering approx how much they cost in electricity if they're on for a full hour?
― NI, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)
Probably a dime. Thanks for the Q. Stay warm out there!
― Kerm, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)
LOL you win award for interntfuney !
anyho a bit of sleuthing and i've discovered it's around 50p, which is fuck all really.

When I was a kid, I had an irrational terror of this type of electric fire:

(I seem to remember discussing this somewhere else around here, but fuck knows where.)
It was all Jimmy Savile's fault. No, really: he fronted a terrifying little series of extended PIF-tyle programmes in the early 1980s called Play It Safe, and I remember horrific scenes of a wee girl who'd fallen backwards on to one of these things (with the guard off) and ... gaaah.
Anyway: I've always been under the impression that those little electric fan heater things eat electricity and aren't really a cost-efficient idea for doing anything other than giving your feet a quick blast of hot air.

PIF-style, that should be. Although PIF-tyle is rather good.
Good grief. How much is a unit these days? I would have said more like 10-20p. (1 or 2kw heater)
We just got a big electricity bill. My housemate, who can't add up or take away, never mind change a lightbulb is convinced this is because I leave my laptop on over night and not due to the fact that two months ago I turned the (electric) heating on. Retard.
― caek, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)
doesn't it have a wattage printed on it? and your electricity bill probably quotes a price per watt/hour. multiply the two together.
the one at work says 2400W (which is it on high so an upper limit). edf page (eventually) tells me about 20p per kwh so, yes, 50p tops.
but don't do what they did at work - had it (them, we had 7) on full until it got too hot and then opened the windows to cool it down again.
