ok, so i want to read it, but i found it really really pointless at 14. can a queer reading be made ? or another kind of theory heavy thing.

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 26 December 2002 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

not sure about the queer thing (though queer in the old sense of bunch of young short things hanging around with each other and laying with swords and other long sticks), there's also metaphor for industrialsiaiton of Britain, and also lots of claims of racism between good white beings and bad black beings. Not sure where Michael jackson would fit in there though.

Theory readings are easily the best way to ruin any art. Sam ////// Frodo though, you could read that queerly if you like.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 26 December 2002 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Well no, you could entirely destroy a piece of art, yeah. I'm just still unconvinced as to why it's worthwhile to interpret an artwork in a way the creator didn't intend, unless we're trying to investigate his psyche.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 26 December 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

intention is not the way to go - the artist is dead, we can never know - someone explain multiple readings/textual analysis in a more articulate way please

Queen G (Queeng), Thursday, 26 December 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

We can know. We can put it together pretty easily, at least a good guess, and textual analysis is something different anyway. I might just be being overcome by the vicious pointlessness of my BA, of course.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 26 December 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

But YES please do explain. Especially if it makes clear why alternate "readings" add up to anyhting more than an easy way of seeming creative w/out actually going to the bother of doing anything.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 26 December 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Ignore me I'm pissed off and don't think much of criticism anyway. Sorry.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 26 December 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Peter jackson already did it. When Frodo and Sam wear making hot hobbitluv you can bet Aragon was playing the fair madien for Boromir. And Im sure Merry and Pippen got a bit drunk one night and one thing lead to another...

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 26 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Legolas looks like a right poof in the films, does that help?

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 30 December 2002 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

reason for anthony to read the book: it includes an urgent and key hobbits-in-jacuzzi scene, no lie

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 30 December 2002 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I dispatching hobbit assasins on Anthony so I gotta run. No one insults my precious and gets aways with it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 30 December 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

One ring to rule them all, surely?

Seconding a "sux" for Tolkein.

I guess that's harsh.

What I mean is that I really dislike the books.

Jesse, Thursday, 29 March 2007 06:24 (nineteen years ago)

No, sux is right. Oh Illuvatar they sux.*
And I think Tolkein knew it as well.

*Past the age of 16, of course.
