Another season, another sale, another half-ton of not-actually-THAT-cheap back catalogue CDs - when will we learn! Record your purchases here.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 27 December 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

After attempting to RAID the Gloucester HMV have come to the conclusion that this place has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Took up to counter 2 x Avengers DVDs (buy one get one free!), 1 x Mr Scruff cd and 1 x Pixies cd (2.99 and I don't have a cd copy ov Doolittle) and then they say "sorry these dvds aren't two for one" in a VERY RUDE MANNER so I say sod it cancel them all and walk out in a grump.

I am waiting till my return to London.

Tomorrow.

Haaaaaahahhahahahahahhahahahahahhaa.

sarah in glos, Friday, 27 December 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there anything I should buy? I've only bought one CD this year. No, that's not true. I have only bought one new release CD this year. I bought Pet Shop Boys' Discography, a Goan Party CD a crap love songs of the 50s one as well.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and a bootleg Smiths CD (not the sort with Christina Aguilera played on top or any such hilarity)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, reading Nick's post makes me feel a bit better for only buying about 5 cds this year.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 27 December 2002 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I gave all my money to the poor children instead.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I gave all of my money to bills. Can I deduct that from my taxes?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 December 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I've bought quite a few CDs this year, some being as a result of recommendations from people I know (whose opinions I respect) on various message boards. I'd never even heard of Fiona Apple, for instance, but I listen to her CD a lot now.

I tried to fight my way around HMV in Oxford this morning, but it was mobbed so I gave up. I was feeling too delicate due to a surfeit of wine last night.

I may try again tomorrow.

C J (C J), Friday, 27 December 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Bought nothing, I have been confined to bed for quite some time before now though.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 27 December 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you in quarantine?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, there's a lovely monkey across the hospital who I keep trying to communicate with.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 27 December 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I will buy love & death as a DVD and it will only cost me eight pounds. I will let you know when I have done it.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 27 December 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

What a brilliant buy. I must get to this inevitable HMV sale.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't find my copy of 'The Best of Bread'. I wonder if I can secure me a digital replacement?

David (David), Friday, 27 December 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

What, like a bionic hand?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

No that technology hasn't been perfected yet.

David (David), Friday, 27 December 2002 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

In virgin:
She's All That DVD
Miss Congeniality

In HMV:
But I'm a Cheerleader
Dancer In The Dark DVD
Len "Can't Stop The Bumrush" on minidisc
Sugababes "Angels" single w/video

Graham (graham), Friday, 27 December 2002 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, buying Miss Congeniality on DVD is not even a good idea in some kind of twisted stupid world.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking hell, my database tells me that I have acquired 278 new albums this year (box sets count as 1, and there are at least 16 of them in that). I must cut down! I can't afford this!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 27 December 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Virgin sale: Dexy's, YOUNG SOUL REBELS: £2.99

I didn't buy it

the pinefox, Friday, 27 December 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I've decided not to get any CD's for a while (a few days). I did buy Super Monkey Ball though, and am feeling guilty about sending poor little creatures to their doom through my game playing rubbish-ness.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 27 December 2002 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

HMV are doing 'Ghost World' on vid for £4.99, which is a bit of a bargain.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 27 December 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

These are the only things I've bought all year.

What's the matter Dastoor, can't you read?

(Or appreciate good art?)

Graham (graham), Friday, 27 December 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Things not bought (yet):
Geri Haliwell Box Set (Too expensive - I'd split it with someone though)
Bjork Volumen II 1993-2002 (Sold out)
Parent Trap (Couldn't find it)
Every movie ever featuring (or even better, very obviously turned down by) Freddie Prinze Jnr, Josh Hartnett or Reese Witherspoon.
Lots of other stuff.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 28 December 2002 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

MOMUS TIME LORD FIVE BUCKS NOT HMV.

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 28 December 2002 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought enough stuff so as to be fully broke now. Not at HMV either. I have much listening to do.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 28 December 2002 05:56 (twenty-three years ago)

HMV argyle st: Bridget Jones Diary £3.99

I didn't buy it and now *utterly* regret it.

Dave (Dave), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Ash: Intergalactic Sevens (grew into it, now I love it)

Coldplay: 'Rush of Blood to the Head' (yes, I know they are being overplayed. Love it anyway, sue me;>)

Will be more, but ask again after the 7th January....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 28 December 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i bought only a disky 3-cd ska compi from hmv having already bought "more greatest hits of the 80s" (disky, 8 cds) and "hits hits hits 80s/90s" (bmg, 6 cds) in the 2 for 22 at virgin last week. spotted in ox st virgin yesterday, "wow that was the 60s" (disky 8 cds), the companion set to "wow, that was the 70s" which i'm sure will interest certain readers.

meg, on the other hand, went slightly cd bonkers yesterday buying the QOTSA album and let there be rock by AC/DC from fopp (and the virgin film guide for a fiver, which i had to then lug around for the rest of the afternoon), "the distillers" (me neither) album from virgin and a human league "best of" (which has neither don't you want me nor keep feeling fascination on), "funky beats and sampled breaks" and "punk legends - the american roots" from hmv...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 29 December 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

WOW THAT WAS THE 60S!!!!! Actually though the 60s were shite. Where is WOW THAT WAS THE 90s eh?

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

or WOW THIS WILL BE THE NOUGHTIES?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

PLEASE DO NOT SAY NOUGHTIES

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The best of the shirelles for 12 euros which wasn't in a sale but it's a fairly cheap price but then it's a fairly cheap-looking album so fuck you. Very good tho.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 29 December 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

"PLEASE DO NOT SAY NOUGHTIES" should be the title, or was that yr goal?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 29 December 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

there is dick all really cheap CDs in the Dublin HMVs.

some quite cheap DVDs - the Wicker Man & Spinal Tap for €15.00 each... nice.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 29 December 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not very cheap.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the way RIP-OFF IRELAND is even worse than RIP-OFF BRITAIN.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well, the Wicker Man is marked down from something like 40 Euro, so it looks cheap. Spinal Tap similarly.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 29 December 2002 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

!!

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, remember Euro exchange rates.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 29 December 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I do. But €40 is still like, £24.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

In the back of the vinyl racks in the Virgin Megastore,Southend.Northern Exposure 3:Expeditions. Triple vinyl pack compiled by Sasha and John Digweed.Sealed and numbered sleeve #0359,released September 1999,deleted May 2000.How it ended up in the racks of Virgin last Friday I will never know, but the sale price sticker said £9.99,and the last time I saw this album for sale was on eBay for forty quid.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 December 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, I know 'noughties' is horrid, but you know it's what cheapo compilations will be calling it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 30 December 2002 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

best of the shangri-las, searching for the young soul rebels (to replace my lost copy), 3 northern compilations (two of which are surprisingly good), a motown compilation, Byrds superhits and something else, all for 24 quid in Virgin.

chris (chris), Monday, 30 December 2002 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Well no Martin they'll be calling it 00s.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 30 December 2002 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

WE don't have an HMV anywhere near where I live but I will tell you that on Boxing Day, the Hitchin branch of WHSmiths was selling DVDs at half price. But not only that, their tills were messing up and they were giving DVDs to us as buy on get one free!!! So I got four DVDs for £20 including: Fight CLub (2disc set), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Lord of the Rings (Animated version) and Caligula.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 30 December 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Hang on, Dr C, you know Cardiff? Shit... Kellys in the market is crap as hell, they seem to think they are selling rarities but they aren't, and if you go there trying to sell anything they'll offer you peanuts. Their website is crap too. When it was run by the original Mrs Kelly in the 70s and 80s it was great, she hadn't the faintest idea of pricing policy, you could get really good stuff dirt cheap, she would also stock things truly alphabetically (eg, Robert Palmer under R) then she sold out to whoever runs it now and it's dreadful. Oddly enough, I work opposite the market, we all go across there for lunch - like I'm going to do in about five minutes.

Happy your kittens are fine!

The only fondness I have for HMV is my first record purchase ever was from there, but that was in the neon days of 1983. 20 years on and it's not as good as it should be. Spillers is by far the best record shop in Cardiff, always has and always will be, and the staff are really nice too and know their stuff. They refused to serve my Dad when he wanted to buy a Neil Young bootleg set from there a few years ago, thinking this middle aged bearded chap was someone from the BPI or Inland Revenue, so I had to go along with him and buy it for him the next day explaining that I - a long valued and well known customer - had him as my dad and he wasn't going to bust them for selling boots, he just wanted the sodding Neil Young set.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 September 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, I wish I'd not mentioned Robert Palmer, I've just read that he's died.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 September 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Virgin Megastore a kind of laundering outfit and not expected to make any money? Who goes there? Bobbins the lot. Playing on the looped 'HMV Sale' thing they do in HMV Oxford (not St) was 'Strings of Life' by Rhythm is Rhythm. But couldn't find the actual source CD. Anyone know where it can be sought (ideally on dodgy rave compo)?

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 26 September 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and there you go, I went to HMV this lunchtime, a lot of the stock had changed from yesterday and I ended up buying "Save the last dance" on video (for my wife) and "Procul Harum; First four albums" for myself. And what's with the new cover of "Pure phase" with Jason as a spaceman walking down a road?

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 September 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob - my wife is from near Cyaaardiff and we go to Wales a lot. Yes, the staff in Spillers are great - I always have a chat with the punky gurl with glasses. I am the proud owner of two Spillers 'the oldest record shop in the world' mugs.

**Happy your kittens are fine!**

One's nearly 14 yrs old now!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 26 September 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Whereabouts 'near Cardiff'? Not Penarth - my old home town - I hope! Good to see the kittens are growing then!

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry!!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy cow, just down the road from Penarth then! Ha ha ha! Us Penarthians looked down on Barry-ites so much, and what did we have that they didn't? A pier? A beach with pebbles rather than sand? Old people's homes? Pah!

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

They used to have Christopher's Records in the High Street! Totally rubbish except I bought a mint copy of Modern Eon's 'Fiction Tales' there about 3 years ago.

They have...erm....Jenner Park - home of Barry Town! They have... Barry Island! They have... Harvey's fish and chip shop in Vale Street! Dolphin Books at Barry Dock!

Actually the Knap is nice. My in-laws live down there, overlooking the sea. Lovely place.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

See, at least Barry had some decent things to its name, like a beach and shops, whereas Penarth was and is and ever will be a street or two of charity shops surrounded by old peoples homes. In retrospect, Barry Island is far nicer now than I remember it being at the time. Penarth is just... ugh! Imagine having to grow up in such a dire place. No wonder I've got issues. 8-)

Anyway, back to the HMV sale...

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

On the site, you can pick up the complete series of Space 1999 for £60. The boxed sets of each series normally cost £60 each. Quite a bargain - if you like Space 1999/Gerry Anderson.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't there always a sale on at HMV???

jel -- (jel), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I walked out with only the aforementioned Ogdens's Nut Gone Flake for £2.99, but I was in the crappy new Islington HMV rather than Oxford Street so there was chuff all there.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it's always the same stuff, but I've finally got round to buying We Love Life by Pulp, and I also bought...
greatest hits by Bjork
The Private Press - DJ Shadow

might get those Johnny Cash American Recordings albums, but might wait until they're a bit cheaper

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 26 September 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel surely otm!

David. (Cozen), Friday, 26 September 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but this is bigger than the other ones. Blue Oyster Cult's greatest hits for £2.99, can't say bigger than that can you?

And is there some law against selling Beatles albums for any less than £9.99 in this country?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 26 September 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope so.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The DVDs section upstairs in Oxford Street was more like it. Every Carry On film for a fiver each, with commentary and extras too not just some cheapo release - I got a couple of those and a DVD of Pressburger/Powell's A Canterbury Tale for a fiver too. There was all sorts of box set shite that tempted me too but it can wait until the next biggest sale ever I think.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

you can get that beautifully blue-tinted bowie 'best of 74-79'
album for 4.99 i notice now if that's not a batgain i dunno what is.

piscesboy, Saturday, 27 September 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

batgain = bargain (titter).

piscesboy, Saturday, 27 September 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

A Canterbury Tale is one of my favourite films - good choice, Tom.

I was in the Oxford St HMV last week and was amazed at all the vinyl. There was stacks of it, old and new. Plenty for only 12 quid or so. Some of it looked so pretty. And 7"s with hand written descriptions on, like the dance 12" racks! It was v.exciting. Maybe buying LPs again and then downloading a digital version from the net is the way I want to go. Better still, why don't they just slip in a copy of the CD for the 30p or whatever it costs them?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 27 September 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My utterly lovely but twelve six CDs friend just called me to say that her dad had given her some HMV vouchers for the sale and that she'd just bought Patrick Wolf and Ivan Smagghe and Michael Dracula CDs! I am so so chuffed by this.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Patrick Wolf? As in the gangly blonde techno folk sexualist lycanthrope? Cool.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

[I don't mean that about The Beach Boys, obv., I just don't think they're as gr8 as everyone says!]

fourteen years pass...

The Reading branch have closing down sale posters in the windows.

Mark G, Saturday, 4 January 2020 10:09 (six years ago)

Shame, did wish i could have made it into a branch while I was in London. BUt the main one i would have headed for closed down in the middle of last year. Glad I heard about that before fighting through the Oxford st crowd to get up there. THink I asked the guy at the FOPP counter if he was aware of what time it closed or something.

I've been visiting HMV since I was a young teen. Remember going into the Bond st branch when i wasa moddy boy.
Really bought a lot of great stuff from the Dublin branches throughout the 90s.

So is the Westfields branch going too?
