michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 28 December 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

what was the question?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 28 December 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

which detective partnership did david soul and paul michael glaiser play?
a)dempsey & makepeace
b)starsky & hutch
c)cagney & lacey
d)dalziel & pascoe.

she went for dempsey & makepeace.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 28 December 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

But that is quite hard. How old was she?

Graham (graham), Saturday, 28 December 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck I don;t know that one. is it something that would be more common to know in the UK?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 28 December 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

she was abt 20. yeah it's not that easy but she had lifelines she could have used. starsky & hutch is american, aaron.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 28 December 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

well i am 22. maybe that is the problem. i have never seen starsky and hutch.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 28 December 2002 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i wouldn't have known that...

robin (robin), Saturday, 28 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

She was thick as shit. She used up two lifelines on the £500 question. This was "Which word describes someone who is branded an outcast?". I was only watching after she'd already gone 50/50. The two answers left were 'parable' or 'pariah'. She still had to phone her gran, who was fairly sure it was pariah because "parable's from the bible, isn't it?"

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 28 December 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

eyeball's right actually, she was as thick as shit. but still...

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 28 December 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

well frankly i was REELING the other night at emma "binton" bunton and will young's pathetic performance on celebrity WWTBAM the other night. "what is another name for the Pope" say the question, and they near-as-dammit plump for PONTIAC!! and when they PASS on the question and get the next one right it's hugs and mwah mwah kissies all round! blimey young people these days chiz bah ect.

katie (katie), Saturday, 28 December 2002 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

"it's PONTIFF you fuckin' remmies!!!!!!"

dwh (dwh), Saturday, 28 December 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

at least they did not go for "poncho". and my mum was most impressed that i knew what "poniard" meant.

katie (katie), Saturday, 28 December 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, after calling the girl on WWTBAM thick as shit, I am going to admit that for a second - just for a second - while reading Katie's post I was thinking, "But it is pontiac, isn't it?"

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 28 December 2002 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

what does poniard mean?

minna (minna), Sunday, 29 December 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

actually i think someone else got £0 ages ago when they said the pope was a primate

bob zemko (bob), Sunday, 29 December 2002 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

one time i was playing at home and the £1000 question was which Latin phrase meant a lawyer or something...but i didnt use a life and just picked the wrong one believing i was right...the shame was unbearable i can tell you

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 December 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

poniard = dagger. i only knew it cos i knew that "poignard" = FRENCH for dagger. steveM if you're playing it at home you wanna get on ILE and ask N and Pete and MarkS and Tom and RickyT all the questions. and Steady Mike for the sport questions. between them they possess ALL THE KNOWLEDGE IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE.

katie (katie), Sunday, 29 December 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

It must be a UK thing I have no idea what the answer is. Millionaire questions are usually amazingly easy.

That Girl (thatgirl), Sunday, 29 December 2002 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

It is not as bad as going on Celebrity Wheel Of Fortune and asking to buy P because you think it is a vowel, or asking for an O for 'awesome'. This really happened.

Damian (Damian), Sunday, 29 December 2002 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Damian speaks the truth

rainy (rainy), Sunday, 29 December 2002 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

someone else got £0 ages ago when they said the pope was a primate

but the pope IS a primate!!

minna (minna), Sunday, 29 December 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Was Starsky & Hutch more popular in the UK than America or something?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone in the Irish one got 0 a good while ago, the funniest part was when the host, leathery old Gay Byrne put his arm around him and said "ah well, those nice people at Eircom have offered you a 200 pound voucher for one of their stores! good man!"

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 29 December 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Starksy & Hutch when first on was v. popular but due to not being in reruns is not familiar to a whole generation.

H (Heruy), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

My girlfriend is an intelligent and knowledgeable woman who does well at home when watching this, but she often struggles with the earlier questions, because she is Italian and has only lived in England for a decade, so some old phrases or references to old TV stump her.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Well it's only easy if you know the answer.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I never understood that. Is it supposed to be a joke or something?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

You're just saying that for attention, aren't you?

Graham (graham), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

No it's just true.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

What?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I refuse to believe you don't understand it.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I thought you were talking to me!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

It just seems to be totally meaningless. When we say a question is easy, it is because we know the answer and expect other people to do so too. To say 'ah, but it's only easy if you know the answer' is trying to turn a statement that was meant objectively into a subjective one. It's a language game that is just banal.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah well it's being particularly nice to the person in the hot seat I suppose. I wasn't really thinking I'd have to defend it when I said it. I find it funny.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)
