Buying a Sega Genesis on a whim: Classic or Cliche?

This afternoon a few friends and I went to Funcoland, purchased a Sega Genesis, a second controller (which I need to return, since half the buttons don't work) and four games. The games are Golden Axe, Shanghai II, Street Fighter II: Champion Edition and Ecco The Dolphin.

Not a total waste of money, I say.. but I fear my college applications will never get done with videogames at my disposal.

*cough* If anyone wishes to buy a battered UK Master System with a few games but no scart lead thing (why do I always lose the leads?) on a whim then let me know.

(I have a Megadrive somewhere too, although with hardly any games, but I'm not sure where. Probably buried under a pile of Master System games. I can't find anything any more. I was reading that Strummer thread on ILM thinking, "oh yeah, I bought that book by Glen Matlock for a pound or two, and, er, I haven't even seen it since the day I bought it." Ugh, resolutions.)

CLASSIC!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 05:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I picked one up from a local thrift store a little while back for around $5. It's one of the earlier, bigger machines with red lettering. I've seen other places around here (Upper Michigan) asking $10-15 for them, although I don't think any have ever sold.

Even though the only games that I have are Mutant League Hockey and Toe Jam & Earl 2, I'd have to agree with the system being classic. Now I just need to get the Streets of Rage series and I'm all set!

I'm just stunned that people still pay cash money for these. Hey, anyone want to buy a ColecoVision off me? Premium quality 80s technology!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 30 December 2002 08:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolute Classic!! I bought a secondhand Sega Saturn just the other day - hours of entertainment.

There's a shop in Chesterfield apparently where you can buy mega-drive games at about 2 pounds a pop.

chris (chris), Monday, 30 December 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I *need* a SNES with Super Mario Kart. I'll pay you if you want to sell me one. Must have 2 comntrollers.

you could of course just find and download the emulation software required for PCs to play all those classic Genesis, SNES, arcade and 8-bit games from days of videogame lore (assuming you're on a PC) - i soent a chunk of last week with MAME (think its Multi Arcade Machine Emulator) playing Atari Tetris, Shinobi, Return Of The Jedi (hardest game in the universe, its official), Gemini Wing (best vertical shoot em up ever), Nemesis, Arkanoid and more

K-Gen was a good Genesis emulator but there's probably something better now - just ask Google or download.com

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 30 December 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i bought this thing called a U-FORCE for my nes the other week for £10 it's like this thing that makes a field and you can move your arms in it and badly control the characters. it only really works for 'mike tyson's punchout' but i got that too so yay...

needless to day you look a total freak using it

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 30 December 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

the toe jam and earl theme has cheered me up to no end this weekend. classic.

maura (maura), Monday, 30 December 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

classic...myself and a friend, both of whom stopped paying attention to computer games around the time playstations came out, decided to start playing mega drive games again...
theres some great stuff available, and unlike the newer games, its easy to get the hang of what's going on,even though some of the games are very difficult...
so what's everyone favourite games?
micro machines 2,sonic,kid chameleon, micky mouse, ghouls and ghosts, toe jam and earl and road rash were all quality...

robin (robin), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

dud, video games are like the most boring ugly things ever.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 30 December 2002 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Would be classic if it weren't for ROMS and emulators. I played Super Tecmobowl a few times over the holiday.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 30 December 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic!Old vid games are the nuts. And as for the SNES,Mr Mark C,I have the very thing you want, complete with Super Mario Kart,F-Zero,Super Mario World compilation,Lethal Weapon and some other titles, plus the two controllers!Make me an offer and I'll post it to you!

As for the fears that playing computer games as a kid will affect you later in life,I used to love playing Pac-Man,and now spend my weekends in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music.....

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Monday, 30 December 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I got an Atari Jaguar for a pound. I took it to pieces and used it an art project.

Anyway, classic!
