on the one hand they pander to the sad nostalgia obsession that afflicts today's mass culture.

on the other hand, they had Five Star on! And they discussed the key question of whether Michael Praed or Jason Connery was the best Robin Hood! And they made me buy a Prince album!

All my dreams are now about Victoria Coren...

Good choice though, Dom.

I Love The 70's & 80's - I don't know if I'd call them classic but pretty harmless fun.

I Love The 90's - dud all the way. They'll repeat that next Christmas.

DV: See earlier thread, c. summer 2001: BBC retro docs, C/D? (No-one paid any attention to it...)

well I Love 1988 is rubbish for the following reasons

1) its 'presented' by the Ninja Turtles, who did not become a success in the UK until Christmas '88 if even then - also the news story on them concentrated on the height of the success with the films and that was 1990

2) Bill & ted's Excellent Adventure actually came out in 1989, so either their researchers should be fired or the producers just chose to slot it in '88 because there was so much else going on next year they wouldnt be able to fit it in otherwise

3) as with all these shows, every single pundit type person they get in to talk about each fad or trend of the time just ends up looking like a complete idiot - its the one time where Peter Kay singing 'I Think We're Alone Now' is just not funny at all...it could be in Phoenix Nights...but not here

4) you are reminded about The Hitman & Her

then again, they did do the 'Summer Of Love' which is an annoying term but meant we get lots of nice footage of pillheads in a club and/or field, a gurning Brandon Block, the concept of Bez reminiscing about events from beyond ten minutes ago - classic

I just remember BBC2 using trailers of Joe 90 to advertise the I Love The Nineties series last year. Sealed its fate, I think.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Monday, 30 December 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I love 1984 was especially classic (Madonna, the Brat Pack, Transformers). All I could think of last night was "Brandon Block really needs to wash his hair". He looked like a New Model Army fan going for a job interview.

VH1 has done their version of I Love the 80s. Oh, it was just horrid!

But Mariska Hargitay's belief that "you think [Dolly Parton]'s going to be a bad actress because of her big boobs, but she rocks!" was really weird considering her mother's occupation and "talents".

All TV nostalgia shows are liars and murderers.

I became nostalgic for Knight Rider without having seen a single episode. There are dark forces at work here.

Concering the USA IL198x: My knee has scheduled a very brief appointment Michael Ian Black's groin. The guy from Queer As Folk was almost as bad -- perhaps worse since he kept droning on about all the HOT CHIXORS who gave him woodies as a kid.

Sorely underused: Aisha Tyler, the best Talk Soup host ev-AH, and the experts who specialize in a particular field, like Dan Savage and the guy who does window displays for Barneys.

I noticed they briefly mentioned the Pixies.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 2 January 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

They spent about 5 minutes (an eternity on cable television) on Hollywood Shuffle, which I thought was interesting. Then a montage of about a dozen who-the-fucks complaining that all Morrissey does is whine whine whine.

Amazing how many of those "presenters" and whatnot could feel nostalgia for hairspray, eyeliner and those smelly pencils.

At least, Patsy rock-chick-extraordinaire finally explained why the hell "Absolute Beginners" had been so popular.

what i couldnt work out was how Vernon Kaye couldve been to the Hacienda given he's only 24-ish isnt he?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Also Christina Ricci's remembrances of the 1980s sound suspiciously like the early 1990s to me.

Does VH1 legally own the rights to Dee Snider?
