di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

My first single was Ride A White Swan. Marc is one of my favourite songwriters, singers, lyricists, guitarists, pop stars and sex gods ever.

Another case where my advanced years are an advantage: I saw him play live. I'm very glad I took the opportunity, on his last tour, even though he was past his best.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I have always wanted a hub cap diamond star halo

C J (C J), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Queen were inspired to write "I want to ride my bicycle" after Marc nicked Brian's bike.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I live v close (100 yards?) to the tree of death. I was mopeding home today going too quickly in the rain along Queen's Rise and I thought of Mr Bolan and slowed down as I got to his place.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 1 January 2003 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

okay i was wrong andrew you do get it. CJ marc bolan will grant your wish.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 2 January 2003 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really, I only have one record. And I actually don't know where my bike is.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 2 January 2003 04:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i only have one record too. and i don't even know the names of all the songs. but i am learning!

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 2 January 2003 05:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Is is ELECTRIC WARRIOR? That one's just perfect.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 2 January 2003 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

no its a greatest hits record

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 2 January 2003 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

That's my next target. I want "Children of the Revolution" because it's so nihilistic.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 2 January 2003 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't get no satisfaction, all I want is easy action baby!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 2 January 2003 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron W, Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

well T. Rex is namechecked in my favorite Jilted John song, "I Know I'll Never":

I love T.Rex, the Sweet and Slade
And Mott the Hoople are really great.

so that has affected my life in a good way.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

How sad this thread throve in my enforced absence. ;-) But good to see it anyway. Classic, run a moribund mailing list about him, etc. etc. I've seen Rolan once at Canter's, looked like he was relaxed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

He probably hasn't heard "Zip Gun" in a while!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

aaron you DEFINITELY get it

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 3 January 2003 05:32 (twenty-three years ago)

yay, bolan thread! my name comes from a bolan song you know, Carsmile Smith and the Old One, i saw it listed in a discography and thought "what a cool name for a band, i'm having that" and didn't actually hear the song for ages afterwards...

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll go with that. Sean and Di back to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread was before my time, but I have talked on ILM about how much I loved T. Rex. First single I ever bought (Ride A White Swan), had loads of posters, saw him play live. One of my favourite singers, songwriters, guitarists, lyricists and sex symbols ever. Probably the first man I ever really fancied.

(Also Di decided I was cool because I'd seen him live. I suspect she was drunk at the time of our IM conversation, but there's another great benefit from being a fan.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

ohhhhhhhhhh i luv marc. i will post pics of me as bolan at our glam party next sunday... hope i can get an appropriate wig in time!!!!!martin you're cool anyway, having seen t rex just propells you into infinite coolness!

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Geocities doesn't allow linking from outside or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

If I heard more (I've only got Electric Warrior), I'd probably have wilder knees for him.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

You should hear more.

(Try the Great Hits comp for the late singles and Bolan Boogie if you can find it for the earlier ones...and then there's the Tyrannosaurus Rex years and the alternate tracks and the...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm sorry, i am still a baby with html.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Call yourself friend, and look me in the eye,
I'll unstrap my knees and apologise,
'Cos I'm, Left Hand Luke and the beggar boys,
O yes we are.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He taught me Jews could be cool and sexy (adjusts coke bottle glasses).

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad used to do his accounting.

My wife always laughs at the lyrics to cosmic dancer.

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to think I WUZ Marc Bolan. A very deluded me. I mean...I kinda look like him...I think.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

t reXoR

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Lurex, you should write a song called "Let's put the X in T. Rex". If you don't I will.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha anthony that is genius. do you have a four track? we could collaborate!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I do!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

rock on, rock on, yeah yeah yeah!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

lets talk about this again in november when i can devote myself to songwriting all day and all night.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

More rock is never a bad thing....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, no prob. Though I'm already brainstorming lines. "She's gonna put the X (unh!) In T. Rex! She's gonna put the O (unh!) in Marc Bohhh-lan!"

Oh god. I really wanna use the line "he's coming out of the tomb and into her womb." I need to be slapped.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, replace the word coming with dancing.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god. I really wanna use the line "he's coming out of the tomb and into her womb." I need to be slapped.

Put a good beat over it, and no one will notice. Rockist verse, though

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"he's coming out of the tomb and into her womb."

hahahahahahahahahaha

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 2 October 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

twenty years pass...

so here i am fact-checking style for the spelling of T.Rex for the book i'm editing, and yes, in general the LP covers use a full stop so that's what it is

and it just struck me how funny this bandname is, like when a little kid has learned you can use a full stop to write the shortening and then on a drawing there isn't room for the whole word (or else they're not quite sure how to spell it and this is a workaround)

everyone calls the dinosaur t.rex now, well, marc bolan made it ok to do that!

mark s, Friday, 12 April 2024 09:32 (two years ago)

Somewhat surprised to see Trex is still exists.

My God's got no nose... (Tom D.), Friday, 12 April 2024 10:51 (two years ago)

.... ignore the 'is'.

My God's got no nose... (Tom D.), Friday, 12 April 2024 10:51 (two years ago)

Abbreviating the first part of the binomial is scientific convention tho cf E. coli so ppl would have been calling the dino T. rex before bolan changed the name of the band

subpost master (wins), Friday, 12 April 2024 11:01 (two years ago)

so yr saying that bolan made it ok to be a nerd

mark s, Friday, 12 April 2024 11:19 (two years ago)

also this v good blog (in a poorly structured post) says im correct:
http://dinogoss.blogspot.com/2013/08/did-jurassic-park-name-t-rex.html

e.coli was my gran's name for the very extremely ancient manky and chipped wooden spoon that my mum liked to cook with (it "improved the flavour")

gnna tell me kids that it stands for erannosaurus coli

mark s, Friday, 12 April 2024 12:37 (two years ago)

So it was T. visconti!

subpost master (wins), Friday, 12 April 2024 16:03 (two years ago)

Bolan was no fool.** Without the full stop inserted everyone would pronounce it 'treks', losing all the connotations of being a badass band!

**Statement not verifiable.
