One of the most depressing parts of ringing in the New Year's Eve this time around was seeing "2003 Discover Card" light up above the apple on TV. I promise to never watch the apple drop at Times Square on TV for future new years ever again.

Jesus. Imagine that: the ultimate symbol of commercialism. Never mind that Discover give you a frigging-high interest rate for the priveliege of holding a piece of plastic that's only useful in the U.S.
(OK, I'm slightly bitter....)

yeah, it's disgusting. the ad industry is my mortal enemy for life! if only they could understand the amount of NEGATIVE publicity that is generated by unncessarily ubiquitous ads for (usually asinine) products, maybe their tactics would change?
my strategies for dealing with offensive advertising:
realize and embrace the fact: truly nothing is sacred. it may not be ultimately provable today, but by believing in advance, i spare myself some devastation when my 'secret garden' of advertisment-free space is inevitably violated. (you know... you wake up in the morning to see a pepsi logo on your forehead when you look in the mirror!)
vote with my $$$: i permanently* boycott companies whose advertising offends me (be it through content, placement, or my pre-existing knowledge that 'this product is crap thus all their ads are lies'!). if i am feeling particularly optimistic, i email them and tell them my decision and why... (*yes, occasionally i have to rescind my decisions for the sake of practicality. it hurts. it hurts BAD!)
pathetic, i know. but less-so than helpless inaction....
